A fragment from the Locus Communis (edited):

"Autumn in Chicago eventually gave way to winter, no better nor worse than the numberless winters before. Fine white snow blanketed the sidewalks and streets and the city transit authority reacted as if they were experiencing snowfall for the first time, apparently not having anticipated its arrival. The elevated trains and city buses fell behind schedule as shivering city-dwellers, bundled in the coats previously relegated to the dark recesses of their closets, checked their phones desperately and muttered against the announcements of further postponements. The streets accumulated a heavy layer of snow before the plow trucks began their work and packed it along the edges of the sidewalks. This delayed welcoming of the new season was a tradition I had always known."
