In the world where machines create, and resources are spent to make them an improved version of the humans ( lol) the humans become obsolete.
It's already happening. I read sci-fictions and speculations and there's a lot of sense in them, you're tempted to buy 100% into it. Maybe it's the mix of faction or whatever, but like you hinted, what was merely an idea decades ago, is now in fact being realised.
They could realized it back then as well, technologically, but the problem was the public thinking and general population. It is easier to realize something if there is nobody asking too many questions.
