Personally Speaking: Thoughts on Inspiration and Writing

“The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.”

~Gustave Flaubert, French 19th century writer, author of "Madame Bovary"

Writing as a Daily Practice

I start off pretty much every morning the same way-- I get up, I wait for the coffee to brew, I feed the cats and then head off to my home office to write. In a sense, it is my "sacred time" during which I attempt to organize my thoughts for the day ahead.

I have been doing this-- or some variation thereof-- for decades. Literally. Before there were computers, I'd sit down with my paper journal and write. The stillness somehow makes it easier for me to sort out my thoughts.

Mornings work really well for me because I can "think about things" and empty my head of creative thoughts before they become "polluted" news stories, email, commerce and other types of distractions.

Inspiration --> Writing --> Inspiration

In some ways, I suppose I approach life "backwards." I know a lot of people who "do things to find inspiration to write," but most of the time I find that I "write in order to find inspiration to do things.

I have long felt that the quote at the top of the page was very much "on the money," in the context of my life. Some would argue that I "think too much" but I have just never been someone who was able to just go forth and "do things" without first having a deeper understanding of them, their implications and their impact on others and the world around me. I suppose my life-long dedication to writing is merely a reflection of the fact that I think better "on paper" than I do "out loud" or even inside my head.

Writing serves as both a catharsis and a source of inspiration because it allows me to take the "floating brain nuggets" drifting around inside my head and make them "concrete," somehow. And once i have committed them to "paper" (electronic, as it may be) it feels like the space is "freed up," inside my head.

De-fragging my Brain...

I've often been asked why I "take so many notes" all the time... and it would not be entirely truthful for me to insist that it's because I have a "poor memory," because I mostly take notes in order to "free up space" in my mind. Once I have written myself a note about something I was thinking about... I generally can stop thinking about it.

In some strange and twisted way, taking notes is like "defragging my brain.

Writing articles, and personal essays, and blog posts-- in many cases-- is an exercise in self-discovery; in "discovering what you believe," as Flaubert once said. Writing becomes a journey of "personal exploration" I have not been able to undertake through any other medium. Even when I was in therapy-- 20-25 years ago-- my therapist soon determined that the best way to "get into my head" was to have me keep journals, and she even gave me "homework" assignments.

Of course, writing means different things to different people-- I can only speak to my own experience. What I do know about me is that it is through the written word that I find most of my meaning and direction in life.

What do YOU think? What does writing mean to you? Is it just something you do "for money" or is it something you do for yourself? Do you write for others, or for venues... or simply "because?" Is it "just a job;" do the words come, regardless of potential for compensation? Do you keep a journal-- or personal blog-- that's just for you? Do you get inspiration for life, from writing... or is it life that gives you inspiration to write? Leave a comment-- share your experience-- start the conversation!

I don't like writing but I love good writers. I journal through painting. That's why I connect with your writing articles. You could replace the word write with paint and that would be me.

Excellent article @denmarkguy!

@reddust, most likely the general process can be applied to pretty much any form of creativity. You paint, I write, someone else might compose music; yet another might be a cartoonist or filmographer.

Whatever we do, it is a creative practice... especially if we're passionate about expressing it.

Well said @denmarkguy🌱

You make me want to code something this weekend.

Thanks!

Indeed... everybody love good writers. :)

Great work! Following you right now.

About writing, I love to do so. I already writed so many short stories - they are my passion, but I do not have a routine to it, it is more like a hobby. However, I really want to someday be capable of writing daily. I started to take notes some time ago and this year I started to uptading Steemit and using it as a blog - an experience that I am enjoying so much.

Thanks for the comment! For me, it is also very important that I enjoy what I am doing... if I can't keep my blogging fun, I'll probably stop... or at least take a break.

interesting take on defragging your mind

I kind of run the opposite way; I think in about 20 different directions at once, and then a distraction in the form of a news event or someone elses blog catches my attention, and coalesces a lot of the previously free floating thoughts into a single topic

I'm glad someone knows how to "consolidate" ideas... I was never much good at it. Seems if I am thinking in 20 directions at once and something "shiny" catches my eye, I'll just end up with 27 ideas... :D

that happens too ;>

this post is fantastic @denmarkguy. ive been writing for almost a year now and its changed my life. love the "floating brain nuggets" tidbit!

Thanks-- I just find that writing is a great way to go from "swirling ideas" to something more tangible...

I find I rely on notes more and more. If it is important at all, I need to write it down or it will be gone! I find using Google Keep very hand. I can literally write with my finger, type, or talk. Then I can access it anywhere.
I used to blog, then switched mediums to YouTube. I love Steemit because I can incorporate many types of expression!

Yep, I'm a note taker, too... tried a few of the note taking apps around, although not Google Keep... I find physical paper notes work well because I also enjoy the (rather archaic) process of crumpling up a piece of paper and launching it at the garbage can; gives me a strange sense of accomplishment!

I love paper as well. The problem is I get ideas in the most inopportune places and times! Rarely do I have paper handy, but I always have my phone. Its a no brainer if you use Google products like Photos, Gmail or Docs etc.

Writing is daily practice, yes this is good for our daily habit. By the way where did you take that pirate ship photo? :)

The pirate ship was here in our local town of Port Townsend, Washington state, USA... for a boating festival a few years ago.

I understand what you mean. I either write because I want to inspire myself or because I feel inspired. Expression is more than an action, it's a state of being that sometimes manifests in actions, but when there is nothing in particular to do and we want to be in that mode, writing comes more natural than anything else.

Sometimes when I can't find inspiration to write, I read my own stories and it brings me right back to the state I was in when I first wrote it and allows me to access the same inspiration that it came from.

I do take lots of notes when ideas strike and I don't have time on hand to write them out... usually means I can bring the ideas back into "active memory" by re-reading them, and then it'll turn into something even if I am in a period of lower inspiration.

"Writing articles, and personal essays, and blog posts-- in many cases-- is an exercise in self-discovery"

Totally agree - even if you lay out the topic ahead of time, writing is like debating yourself. I'll write an idea and have to be like, "Wait, is that right? What about all these counter-arguments?"

When you end up with even a few hundred words that you can really stand behind, sometimes that's a miracle!

Music is the same way for me. It feels more like exploring than creating. Like all of the songs are already there, and I just have to find them.

Very true! I often end up having long "conversations" with myself in the process of turning loose ideas into something more tangible. And sometimes, I just arrive at the point of "Yeah... well... this is just NOT worthy."

Hej @denmarkguy,
I love writing and I often find it the best way to express my thoughts and feelings. I have never done it professionally, though, as it has been more of a hobby, and most of things I write, I keep for my own enjoyment. That's about to change with Steemit :-)

The "backwards approach" works for me too - inspiration and new ideas often come after developing my thoughts in writing.

Thank you for posting this, I enjoyed it thoroughly! Godnat!
