Hello World
I want to share my recent thought I had. I’ve heard many times that Russian females are generally very attractive, and I can also vouch from my experience. I understand that there may be some selection bias going on here, but until proven otherwise, for the sake of this discussion, let’s assume that it is true.
If so, it leads us to the next question: what caused that to happen? I could reword this question as: what factors put pressure on this natural selection?
Before we search for an answer, let’s agree on some of my argument's assumptions of general human qualities:
First, let’s assume that beauty is universal, meaning all men will generally have similar ratings for beauty; some may say it is a social construct, and I agree, however, to larger extent I think it is in our biology therefore innate.
Second, let’s assume that men tend to primarily pick their mate based on beauty. Yes, there are many exceptions, but I would think this is true for most of the male population.
Third, let’s assume that women tend to primarily pick their mate based on his ability of some sort to produce value. This assumption is questionable but, for the sake of this discussion, we just need to agree that women put greater importance in this factor than men would on women- which I think is true without a doubt.
Now, with these assumptions we can now try to search for some conditions that could have led to one country’s population more attractive than another (generally).
According to the second assumption, men puts greater importance on beauty of his potential mate, which is equivalent to saying that men exert greater pressure on natural selection for beauty. This means, other things equal, one condition that could exert pressure on the natural selection for beauty is difference in female and male population of a country.
When a country’s female population is larger than the male population, there would be lesser competition amongst men and greater competition amongst women, resulting in more attractive females generally passing down their genes. And greater the frequency, duration, or extent of this condition, greater the degree of natural selection for beauty- generally.
Then, what kind of events could have created this condition, that female population is greater than male's? One that comes in my mind is war. During war times, men are sent far away from home and greater casualties result from a male population. I think it would be interesting to see if there is indeed a correlation in a country’s frequency of warfare and its women’s beauty. In case of Russia, this explanation seems to support it.
Now, what about when it’s the opposite, when a male population is larger than the female population?
According to the third assumption, women put greater importance on male’s ability to produce value- such as financial or social. This means women exert greater pressure on natural selection for men’s ability. Ability could mean many things, but I think the best tool to rate men’s abilities to produce value is by comparing the amount of money each makes. To make more money than his peers, a man must excel in some field. This could mean many things but I think one of the universal underlying factor that contributes in all fields is intelligence. Yes, I understand that there are other factors such as personality and social status but, for the brevity of our discussion, let’s just consider one factor, intelligence.
This implies, when a country’s male population is greater than the female population, there would be greater competition amongst men and lesser competition amongst women. The shortage of women would disfavor the males with less desirable traits such as the ones with the least ability (less intelligence?) and the natural selection will favor the men with higher ability and intelligence, resulting in more adept and intelligent population depending on the extent, frequency, and duration of this condition- generally.
Yes, I understand that there are many factors of natural selection and intelligence and beauty are both at work for the both sexes. The point is, the general difference in each sexes's order of preference of factors when choosing mate will manifest themselves overtime if conditions that cause changes in competition level among each sexes, such as differences in population ratio of sexes. This means, if a country wishes more attractive citizens, wage more wars or become a communist nation; if a country wishes more intelligent citizens, send women instead to war and become anarchist nation.
This is a joke by the way. I think this sounded wrong in many ways but I just had a random thought and I thought it was interesting enough to share it.
Don't take this too seriously.
