June 30 Days Writing Challenge - Life Hacks - Day Four: Keep A Clear Mind By Unloading Ideas Immediately

in writing •  7 years ago

Hello and welcome to the fourth day of the June 30 days writing challenge. If you want to know all the details about this specific challenge, have a look at the introductory post. In short, I will be posting every day a short tip, or technique, or opinion, something that you can call a "life hack". Feel free to join the challenge and post your own life hacks. I will do my best to upvote each day at full strength (about $3 at the current STEEM price) 3 posts tagged #challenge30days (leaving a link to your posts in the comments will also help).

Empty Your Mind Often - Unload Your Ideas

In the second day of this challenge, I briefly mentioned one of the productivity frameworks that really tocuhed me in my early days as a procrastination fighter: Getting Things Done. The life hack described in that post, the "2 minutes rule" was taken from GTD, but it's not the only one I borrowed from there.

There is another one, called "Mind Like Water".

Let me explain.

One of the major sources of stress in our lives is not the so called "outside world", but our own mind. The incessant back and forth between a regretful past and an anxious future is taking a huge toll on our clarity and mental well being. Stopping this continuous buzz of the mind is clearly outside of the scope of this article, and somehow I think it's a task spanning for more than a few lifetimes.

But there is something that can alleviate that. It's a small thing, but it's important. It's about ideas, and how to unload them from our minds, the very moment we're having them.

So, every time you have a great idea (about your next picnic, or your next blog post, or your next blockchain startup) just stop whatever you're doing and write that down. No questions, no excuses, just unload that thing off your mind.

Of course, you should have some sort of a setup in place for this, like always carrying a notepad or at least a smartphone, but even some pen and paper will do it. The thing is to take it out of your mind, in a system you can trust.

When I started to implement this habit - because, as you guessed, it's nothing more than a habit - I tested a few journaling applications on my iPhone, but eventually picked the simplest "Notes" app and then imported them in my blogging setup (that's another story).

Why is this working? Because, if you leave your ideas lingering around in your mind, a significant part of your focus will follow them. Even more, as your focus dilutes, you may lose those ideas for ever and get frustrated and feeling empty.

It's true that you can't control the moment when the next idea will hit you, but you can control what you do when it hits you. And, slowly, this reaction will spiral out in other areas of your life.

When presented with unexpected and challenging situations, you will tackle them in a more organized way. The habit of describing your ideas the moment you're having them will help in you describing and analyzing other events, more or less stressful, and will lower the chances to act on autopilot.

So, really curious to read about your life hack today. Leave a comment with a link to your post, if possible.

If our mind is getting negative idea, it is better to unload it quickly for further damage.

I am 100 percent agree with you, A clean and clear mind think positively and the mind contains garbage always think garbage, so try cleaning your mind so often to get better ideas and positive thinking.

Totally agree with unloading the idea............. in fact, for me it works better if I put down my idea on paper ASAP. Particularly because I have a tendency to overthink stuff and if I let it remain then it changes the idea subtly in my mind.

Putting thoughts in words can also grant a certain clarity if vision and can even help us refine the idea. This is all apart from the fact that there is a chance that one might forget the idea completely afterwards, if not written down.

I do this too.

However, I would recommend writing your ideas down on paper, using a pencil/pen. There's something about the physical act of writing that (for me, and I've read research into this too) works better than typing into a Phone/Computer.

I'm as plugged-in as the next buy, but I've certainly noticed that not only am I able to let go of the idea better when it's on paper, but I also tend to elaborate on the idea in more detail (helping me later) when I write on paper (in numbered notebooks is my preferred method) - and I can draw diagrams/sketches too, which is even better.

This is important. Our minds never like the present moment but obsess about the past or future. Now is when the good stuff happens :)

I think one of the great things about unloading all of your ideas in one app, or in one notebook, it's that you take a step back and mix some of your great ideas. In your head, tow ideas where good, but looking at them together makes them great.

A good mind can make anything. It represents the beauty and it can do the best for the world.

Likewise, when there are a lot of ideas circulating in your mind, the best you can do is write them so that the inspiration continues. I can add that with any moment, any action of a person by your side or perhaps a song that you heard on the radio, can be sources of innumerable ideas.

In Pakistan there is quote that " Empty mind is a home of evil", so we should be fill our mind with positive and meaningful thoughts.

Salamat po!

Your life hack is excellent. I began exactly the habit you describe a few months ago and it has soothed my mind and improved my retention + clarity of ideas. One of the easiest things I've ever done to make a huge improvement in my life experience. Journals are amazing.

What held me back before was feeling that I had to do it the "right way," writing daily entries like "dear journal, here's how my day went..." but now I just freeform and use bullet points throughout the day/night. WAY BETTER.

BTW -- Here's my submission for the writing challenge today.

I find it works especially well when I work at home @dragosroua because in the 15 minute breaks I can get some chores done that I normally put off. Doing things in fifteen minute blocks is more bearable for cleaning etc. 😁

It's one of those things though, that although I know it works really well for me I more often fall into the trap of getting caught up on the computer and not moving for hours. I need to set the alarm on my phone again. That's the best way.

I should get plenty of exercise to day though, running around after the kids. 😁

absolutely..the moment u express your ideas, u become so relaxed and all your stress vanish..it is a great way to refresh and unload the burden u have..u express yourself so good..

Well said that "Keep A Clear Mind By Unloading Ideas Immediately" I am agree with you. Clean and clear minds also discover the new ideas about there job and there work. You philpsophy about new creativity is directly related to clean and clear mind. Good and positive thoughts. I agree and appreciate you thoughts.

Excellent way to download ideas from the mind, many times I write down ideas that rebound in my mind, but I do it in any paper that appears at the moment and when I need it, it is an ordeal to think that I have lost it. With your publication, I have realized that I must have an agenda designed for this and thus avoid losing my important ideas in loose papers.
Thanks for sharing. Here is my publication today:
