Ratusan tahun yang lalu di dataran tinggi Gayo terdapat sebuah kampung yang bernama Penarun. Di kampung itu tinggallah satu keluarga yang hidupnya sangat berkekurangan, seorang bapak serta ibu yang memiliki seorang anak laki-laki yang berumur sepuluh tahunan dan adiknya yang masih menyusui. Untuk menghidupi keluarganya si bapak bertani dan juga berburu hewan ke hutan. Disamping itu dia juga menangkap dan mengumpulkan belalang di persawahan untuk mencukupi kebutuhan makan keluarganya di saat musim paceklik. Belalang itu dikumpulkan sedikit demi sedikit di dalam lumbung padi yang sudah kosong karena musim paceklik saat itu.
Hundreds of years ago in the Gayo highlands there was a village called Penarun. In the village lived a family whose life was very poor, a father and mother who had a son who was ten years old and his sister who was still breastfeeding. To support his family the father farms and also hunts animals into the forest. Besides that, he also arrested and collected grasshoppers in the rice fields to meet his family's food needs during the dry season. The grasshopper was collected little by little in the rice barn which was empty because of the famine at that time.
Suatu hari si bapak pergi berburu rusa ke dalam hutan sendirian dan meninggalkan si ibu dan anak-anaknya di rumah. Di saat makan siang tiba, anaknya yang sulung merengek dan merajuk karena tidak ada lauk yang bisa di makan sebagai teman nasi. Karena terus merajuk lama kelamaan si ibu merasa iba dan sedih melihat anaknya, hal itu membuat si ibu akhirnya memerintahkan si anak untuk mengambil belalang yang ada di dalam lumbung untuk dijadikan lauk. Setelah mengambil beberapa ekor, ternyata si anak lupa menutup pintunya kembali dan itu membuat semua belalang yang ada di lumbung terbang keluar.
Di saat si bapak pulang dari berburu, dia kelihatan lelah dan sangat kesal karena tidak ada buruan yang di dapat. Kemarahannya semakin memuncak saat mengetahui belalang yang telah begitu lama dikumpulkannya hilang semua tanpa tersisa. Dalam keadaan lupa diri di bapak marah dan memukuli si ibu hingga babak belur serta menyeretnya keluar rumah. Bahkan dia begitu tega sampai-sampai memotong (maaf) puting payudara istrinya.

Karena rasa sakit serta sedih yang dirasakannya si ibu pergi dari rumah, dan dalam keputus asaan si ibu menuju ke Atu Belah yang selalu menelan siapa saja yang bersedia ditelannya. Niat semacam itu akan terkabul bila dia ' mujangin' yaitu mengucapkan kata-kata dalam bahasa gayo dalam bentuk nyanyian. Beginilah kata-kata nyanyian si ibu, " Atu belah, atu bertangkup, nge sawah janyin te dahulu" yang artinya, batu belah, batu yang dapat menyatu kembali, telah sampai janji kita dahulu. Kata-kata ini dinyanyikan secara berkali-kali dengan penuh perasaan oleh si ibu. Sementara itu si anak dengan menggendong adiknya yang masih kecil, sambil menangis terus mengikuti ibunya dari kejauhan.
Akhirnya, secara perlahan batu itu mulai terbelah dan membuka. Dan si ibu pun tanpa keraguan masuk kedalam batu yang terbuka itu. Setelah si ibu masuk, batu itupun secara perlahan menutup kembali. Disaat peristiwa itu terjadi keadaan alam disekitar tempat itu sangatlah buruk, hujan deras yang disertai angin ribut serta bumi terasa bergetar. Setelah semuanya mereda, dengan hati yang hancur dan luluh si sulung dan adiknya hanya melihat rambut ibunya yang tidak habis tertelan oleh Atu Belah. Dan kemudian si sulung mengambil tujuh helai rambut ibunya sebagai kenang-kenangan.

When the event happened the natural environment around the place was very bad, the heavy rain accompanied by hurricanes and the earth felt trembling. After everything died down, with a broken heart and meltdown the eldest and his sister only saw his mother's hair which was not swallowed by Atu Belah. And then the eldest took seven of her mother's hair as a memento.
