Frenemies

We hand the knife to that person who knows the most about us, who is the only one possessing the insidious power to destroy us. It takes someone subtle to choose that person who is there to embrace you when come to a halt and who is still a bit gullible for not attempting to take you down.

I first encountered the word ‘frenemy’ on ‘Sex and the City’. It didn’t take me too much to realize it is actually a combination of two words; friend and enemy.

Cambridge dictionary defines the well-known word ‘friend’ as follows: ‘a person who you know well and who you like a lot, and who is usually not your family.’ The word originates from the prefix ‘pri-’ meaning ‘to love’. So it is official the word has a positive connotation and we are all familiar with it.

The same source defines the word ‘enemy’ as follows: a person who hates or opposes another person and tries to harm them or stop them from doing something’. Going back in history, the words ‘personal enemy’ put together also meant ‘enemy in war’, you see there were arms involved, so it was more inhumane back then. Knowing that us, human beings have feelings that we usually neglect, I still think all our enemies are swines…

I owe Cambridge dictionary a lot as it defines the word ‘frenemy’ as: ‘a person who pretends to be your friend but is in fact an enemy.’ as you all thought.

In a world full of phony people, it is no coincidence we are surrounded by many frenemies. It becomes even more collapsing to find out about the betrayal of your friends you know for a long time. When someone does bad to you, it can’t be for your own good or safety. Get yourself out of those abusive relationships (not necessarily the sexual ones)…
