Shelby stopped talking for a moment. He looked a bit uncomfortable.
I’ve been talking a long time he said I’ve drank a lot of beer. I’m not superhuman or a trucker. I got to go PEE!

Everyone was momentarily startled then burst out in laughter.

I’ll be back in a little bit. Shelby said ....then he was gone.

The dragon lady was laughing along with everyone else. She wiped away tears with a napkin. She took a dainty sip of ...something, then took over where Shelby left off.

I’m so relieved to know that the ArchMage is as human as the rest of us mere mortals. He could have been a bit more subtle though don’t you think? TMI perhaps?

Every one laughed at that.

While he’s gone I suggest that other’s tell us a bit of their experiences back in the day. In fact I know just who to go first. She said Dragon Force!...yes I’m talking to the ORCs...Marc and Captain...tell us a story or two while the ArchMage is gone.

Marc and Captain were startled, then resigned. Captain looked at Marc and said . I know how big your ego is so I’ll graciously let you go first.

If looks could kill Captain would be six feet under. Marc stared at him for a moment and said Mom always did like you better.

Captain nodded. This was an old game they played. It was very effective at relaxing those listening. It also caused them to be underestimated, a strategic advantage at times.

Yup...and she had a reason too. Cow-boy up Injun. Tell us a story he grinned.

Ok...I’ll do it Marc said. He turned to the crowd and said Now listen up...this is a no shitter. It really happened. I was there

I recall that one of the neighborhoods on Flint Island only had one child. All of it’s residents except for that one single mother had no children. I recall one day I was in that neighborhood, walking my beat, chatting with that child. He name was Cody, at the time he was about eight.

What happened to your legs? Cody asked me.

That was one thing that I purely loved about young pre-school children. They are innocent and pure. If they wanted to know something they just came out and asked. There wasn’t any PC bullshit or beating around the bush.

I was in a war and the bad guys blew them off I told him

Did it hurt? Cody asked. He just come out and said it. No beating around the bush. No euphemisms. No PC....just blunt, plain everyday talk. I loved it. Still do.

Kinda. It hurt a lot. I told him.

Were you scared? Cody asked.

I certainly was. I replied. I was terrified.

Cody didn’t say much for a little bit. Then he reached up and took my finger in his hand.

That’s OK. I’ll look after you. It’ll be alright. Cody was as serious as he could be. For some odd reason I had a little bit of trouble seeing. Must be dust in the air I thought, or maybe it was the rain. It was still raining. It kept raining. I had to wipe my eyes a lot.

Thank you Cody I told him, with a little catch in my voice. I really appreciate that. It makes me feel much safer to know that you care.

After that day Cody was always there to walk the beat with me, fog, light rain , heavy rain or full bore ThunderBoomer. Cody was ALWAYS there.

Odd.... it seemed to have been raining forever.
