Memoir of a runaway girl - A true story!
Listening to Doris’s story about what had happened should have been a clear indication that she’s not someone I would want to be friends with. Nonetheless, I let my naivety take over and I remained. Miguel also told me that the Doris escapade was a one time thing with her, and that they were no longer a couple. I lived with her for about two months and had mixed emotions. I really liked Miguel but later found out he had actually slept with his sister in law more than once and this was hard to deal with. Always wondering if they were still doing this behind my back or not.
I also found things out the hard way, that Doris’s new boyfriend, Walter, was a pimp. I asked him for a ride one day and naturally he said yes, since he never seemed to work, or was busy. During the drive, he started complimenting my looks and told me that I could make a lot of money. He wanted me to work for him. I looked at him like he was an alien, not understanding how he could ask his girlfriend’s roommate this type of question. Of course I declined. Next thing I know, I was pushed out of a moving car, bouncing off the curb onto the sidewalk. I sat there, all banged up, blood coming from my hands and knees, thinking “My god, what the hell just happened?”
I gathered myself up and noticed we had not driven too far so I made my way back to the apartment. Showered and changed, I packed my things and decided to go have a chat with my roommate about what happened. I was going to tell her I was moving out but things went a little different than I thought they would.
Since we both worked for the same establishment, a grocery store, it was not hard to track her down on her break. I had asked her if she was aware of what her boyfriend was doing for a living, to my surprise she did. I went on to explain to her what had happened. She apologized and said she was going to be breaking up with him soon. Again, being gullible, I believed her.
Things went pretty much the same for about a week.
After things settled down, Walter apologized. We were all getting along much better. One night we were all sitting outside, at a corner on the sills of a bank. It was about 3am in the morning. Just talking and laughing when the police showed up. They said they had received complaints about us making too much noise. Of course, I spoke up because I knew we had not been loud. If you have not guessed by now, I have never been one to respect authority. I mean seriously, they put their pants on one leg at time like the rest of do right?
Here I was getting mad and talking back to the police. I stood up, and said, “We were not making any noise. We are just sitting here talking! What’s wrong with that?” The not so nice officer replied “Miss, I suggest you sit back down and keep your mouth shut before you end up getting yourself into bigger trouble then you already are”. Oh boy, talk about saying the wrong thing to set me off. Police trying to tell me be quiet while infringing on my rights? No way was I taking this sitting down.
I replied, “Sorry but no, I do not have to sit down and shut up just because you told me to, we are doing nothing wrong and you think you have the right to tell us what we have to do? I don’t think so.”
Wrong move, the officer came towards me, handcuffs in his hand and the next thing I knew, I kicked him and ran like the wind.
Not sure if I was actually being chased, I ran into the local pool hall, locking myself in the bathroom, as if that would stop what was happening.
Next thing I knew, the door opened, and the two officers grabbed each of my arms, handcuffed me, and carried me out with my feet never touching the floor. I was then placed into the backseat of one of the cruisers, crying and shaking like a leaf.
They took my ID and called my information into the station. They didn’t have computers in their cars back then. I did not know if that car theft would be on my record. To my surprise, I came back clean as a whistle. The officer turned and said, “Abernathy, I could arrest you for assaulting an officer, but I am going to be a nice guy tonight. Since you have no priors, I am letting you go with a warning, you are to go home now and do not let me catch you out here again at this hour or I will arrest you.”
I was lucky. The cop opened the door and removed the handcuffs. I said “thank you” and I left. I made my way back to the corner but everyone had left. “Nice friends”, I thought to myself.
The next day, I had worked all day and then I went to the bakery and came home. I opened the door and the next thing I knew, I was thrown flat on my back onto the floor.
