Little Light Beings

in writing •  6 years ago

At the end of the universe there was a house, and inside that house some little light beings lived, feeding on light. Sometimes light missed, so the light beings fell in the deepest slumber, a slumber without time nor dreams.

When the light was sparse they went around indisposed, frayed in their soul and intentions.

But when the first shy morning sun rays came back to strike the windows of their little house and those many mirrors they had placed inside, those little light beings woke up from their long sleep and ran around, with thousands of rainbows flashing in their eyes.
It always was a big party, when the sun shone.

Then the autumn came, and the sun hid behind the clouds.
In the house there was a serious muttering echoing between the walls.
«Every year it’s the same story, it can’t go on this way» one of them said weakly.
«We must find a way to have light all year round».
They talked for a long time, and as it usually happens after long discussions, a decision was made.

«A big lantern will be built, so to have light in all seasons. So is decided! »
And in one instant the little beings put themselves at work.
Beyond the borders of their homeland, at east, after infinite expeditions, they found Nitrogen, Quartz and Tungsten. They studied the mysteries of light. They knew how to proceed.

The inauguration day there was great commotion.
It was a winter day, one of the coldest and shadiest of the year.
At sunset, behind a blanket of menacing clouds, an opaque sun barely gave them the strength to turn on the machine. It was the Big Bang and the Apocalypse.

A huge roar filled the house: an incandescent gleam lighted up the little beings’ pupils. The energy got to flow in their not-bodies of not-matter like if it had been triggered by a million of sparks.

They danced all night in pure ecstasy, and so they did the morning, the afternoon and the days after. Time lost its meaning. The little beings were happy and multiplied themselves; there were so many they looked like an army of artificial light that banged against itself, and so they kept on multiplying their number, laughing and crying tears of joy.

The house became a blinding whirl of light, and it started to twirl in circles, unaware of gravity and of the laws that rule all things in the universe.

Then something saturated.
Then something broke.
Shadows that were hidden in the silence started to take over.
And there it was, infinity.
