Hello, my name is Toyin and I would like to the Yoruba Tribe.
The Yorubas is a tribe that occupy the western part of Nigeria, some of the dialects spoken include: Oyo, ijesha, Egba, Awore etc. the languages is spoken by over 20 million people across Africa. In the acceint days the gods worsiped by the yourbas (usually called orisa or orisha )Inclue:
Olorun (meaning the Lord of the heavens),
Eshu (Usually refered to has the devil but they are not the same)
Ogun (refered to has the god of iron)
Sango (god of fire and thunder)
Obatala (father of human kind)
Orunmila (god of devinity)
Oduduwa (not really a god but he is regard has the father of the yorubas)
According to the Yoruba folklore, the god meaning Olorun created the world, and during the process of creation he gave a chicken and sand to Obatala and asked him to go to earth and create it since it was all covered with water. As Obatala began his journey from heaven to earth he got drunk on palm wine (a form of intoxicating drink tapped from the top of palm trees) and was unable to continue is journey down to earth. This gave oduduwa the chance to carry out the task given by Olorun who took the chicken and sand and came down to earth. He poured the sand in the water and placed the chicken on it, the chicken using its legs scattred the sand all over there by creating the continents has we have it now.
As weird as the story sounds, that’s the story of creation according to the yorubas. A point to note is Sango regarded as the god of fire and thunder, he was believed to be brave, head strong and a tyrant and deals with wrong doers by either striking them with thunder or burning them with fire. He still has dedicated worshippers till today.
Oyo is a town deep in history, it was once the stronghold of the Yoruba empire and the seat of power, holding the seat of the Alaafin of Oyo, the title of their king meaning (The lord of the Palace). The Alaafin is the paramount ruler of all Yoruba kingdom and he is still regarded has such.
