As a wannabe writer and tech enthusiast, I recently purchased Scrivener - a software package that aims to help authors organize their work. I read many reviews and watched lots of You-tube videos about it, so I took the plunge.
What is Scrivener?
Although you could think of Scrivener as a word processor, it is so much more. You can outline your story, write notes, add research and meta data, character and location sheets to refer back to. Each chapter is kept as a separate folder, inside which you write your scenes. All elements of your story can be shuffled around easily.
Why did I buy it?
I am currently writing a fantasy story in collaboration with @rhondak and @bex-dk. The realm of Emerus has to be consistent in all of our separate parts. The business of world building is new to me so thought this software would be ideal for me to keep all the characters, wildlife, creature design and locations organized and indexed for easy retrieval.
What do I think of Scrivener?
Up until now I have used Word for writing. Although it’s great as a word processor, I could imagine it becoming unwieldy once the story grows past several thousand words and hundreds of pages. Scrivener keeps all of my notes, references, and research all in one place, easily searchable. Yes, there is a bit of a steep learning curve when it comes to Scrivener, but that’s what You-tube is for. To get started with the basics doesn’t take very long. I experimented earlier with importing the four chapters of my Virtual Mortality story and compiling them into an e-book. This worked flawlessly. I then compiled the manuscript into a Kindle book, and this too worked fine. It can compile into PDF, doc, txt, HTML, print and many other formats - so basically you write once, and compile it into a variety of formats at the click of a button. I can see why so many writers love using Scrivener.
Will it make me a better writer?
Definitely not, but I will be a better organized one.
If you are interested in learning more about Scrivener, take a look at the following video from the makers, Literature and Latte.
Their website is http://www.literatureandlatte.com if you want to learn more. Scrivener is available for Windows, OSX, Linux and iOS. The Mac, PC and Linux versions all have a 30 day trial.

My roommate just loaned me a computer I can use, so I'm excited to get Scrivener & be able to write again.
I'm trying to get the brains to type again fired up. Do they still have the hours of use trial, do you know?
Also if they have a referral code, I wouldn't think it tacky if ya got credit for leaving people towards a great product & want to share it.
I love that there are videos to help save on frustration hours. You're right about the steep learning curve, but eh, we're all here. ;)

Yeah nice one. I used Scrivener for a 25,000 word graphic novel script and a 40,000 word academic exegesis. Couldn't have kept track of it all without this software. A must for writers.

Hmmm. This sounds interesting @gmuxx I may have to check this out. I'm starting to get to that point where i'm forgetting details i've written in the past on my novel. This could be a big help. I'm excited to hear about your collaborative work in Emerus. That is super exciting! I always thought it would be a blast to work together with other authors to create something bigger than you could have made yourself. Talk to you later!

interesting. I'm writing a novel and a graphic novel (I'll post it on steemit as a serial), and this tool could be useful.

I would watch the video first, then maybe try the demo if you think it's for you. They give you 30 days to trial it.

Ooh that is very interesting..I always have a lot going on and would love to have a couple of open projects organized well right at my fingertips. I wonder if they make this for Mac? Thanks for sharing!

I remember scriviner from way back. It was good, but too much distraction to keep things properly organized as i wrote. (No, I'm not the type to go back and organize after.)
I checked out nimble writer on steam. My screen ended up less cluttered, and everything was two out three clicks away. Also it's way cheap.
