"You're not even successful on Steemit!" - A Personal Short Story.

in writing •  8 years ago

A few hours ago, I introduced Steemit to, let's call them, "friends" for now.

I obviously showed them proof of payments, some trending posts and I shared some of the most successful crowdfunding articles I've seen so far.. - I did that, because I know that "success stories" and proof of being legit is what it takes to convince people.

The thing is, that most of these people already heard about Steemit.. And they heard of it last year, during the time some authors got INSANE amounts of rewards for their posts..

  • So, what could I do?

I clearly couldn't show them my own results nowadays, as I immediately figured that these people would be interested in $1000+ amounts and nothing less than that.. So I did what I thought was a smart move.

  • I showed them my previous results. Rewards I got in the beginning of my Steemit career.

Rewards of $400, $500 and even $900..

They wrinkled their eyebrows and said something like: "That's decent but it still sucks compared to others.."

Instead of arguing with them, I agreed on the things they said. My results might actually "suck", compared to others. - That's true...

However, as I've even said in some of my previous posts, I don't compare myself with others. I don't compare my own results with other people's results.. And I don't do that due to several reasons.

One of the reasons are, that I'm not heavily invested.. So I won't earn as much as others because of that simple reason. - Another reason, is that if I would compare myself with others all the time.. - Then I would become very miserable.

The next thing I did..

Was to simply compare the different platforms they are using today.. Crapbook, Twatter and Instablame. They truly love these platforms.. Because "they are so awesome!"

One of the first things I asked them was:

  • How much have you earned from your contributions on these platforms?

Have you ever been rewarded with anything besides a like, share, retweet or a couple of nice comments? - That was my next question.

Just like I knew, they wouldn't be able to respond..

So I continued to say, "if I earn 1 single cent on the things I share.. Then I'd be making profit.. And I would earn more than you."

They agreed on that, but still thought that my success on Steemit was poor.. Because they compared me to other people.

These people will probably not join Steemit at this time...- And honestly speaking, I don't care if they join or not..

I have almost 600 followers now.. And that's about 300 followers more than they have on their instagram pages.. - Wouldn't that count as a success? - I guess not..

Some people are just plain stupid.. And I won't spend time with people who doesn't care to understand the things I say.

Greed can be a nasty thing.

Nice 'friends'...

Everybody I have shown my lowly rewards to, after being here just over 2 weeks, has signed up and are impatiently waiting to be authorised. I pointed out that it takes work and dedication but if I can do it they surely can.

Like you I am not investing anything but time and enthusiasm and this has repaid me more in 1 payout than on any other platform EVER

Yeah I know, and I have to say.. Most people I've been talking to are very positive and they truly like the concept of Steemit. - I just had to share this story, as it's actually the opposite of how most people react.

"Greed is the route of all evil" so they say. I say steemit is awesome, and yes, you might make 0.001 Steem on a post or comment, but that's 0.001 more than you had before, and hopefully the platform continues to grow and the price of Steem continues to climb, so your 0.001 will someday be worth some real money!

I totally agree with you. And for each 0.001 you make, you'll ultimately end up earning more, due to steem power, followers and everything there is to it.. But some people can't see that.

Give it 3 years. They'll arrive. They'll beg you to resteem their posts to your 100,000 followers.

Haha yeah, and I might actually do it.. for $1000+ SBD. :P

I often get sheepish friends mention how they should have bought $50 bitcoin when I yelled it from the rooftops in early 2013.
I tell them they can get $2 steem right now, or just blog for it with no outlay, but they don't join.
I look forward to hearing their anguished self flagellation again in 2020.

I know! - I guess it because some people doesn't believe in other cryptocurrencies or something.. I don't know.. Some people are just odd and weird.

We care about these people, but they show a single minded devotion to only recognising opportunities after they've passed.

Well said!
The have opportunities right in front of them.. But they are to ignorant to see it. - They chose not to see them.. - The opportunity vanish and they come to regret their decisions later on.

It's a shame actually.

I get that a lot of apparent opportunities are dead ends, so expect some cynicism, but they appear to have no curiosity, or framework for recognising genuine opportunities when they arrive.

What I've realized over time, is don't try to "sell" a concept, rather try to "hook" others to it. If you are trying to "sell it", others are like "ah, ok, so why is he trying to get me in?"... something like that... instead, if you just mention that you posted something and that post earned you X, it might make people ask questions and then lead to a process of "onboarding". But it has to be on some irrelevant conversation or something...

Great point and I know what you're talking about. As a salesperson myself, I know I often try to "sell" things. It's just a habit of mine. However, I don't "sell" when I'm sharing my own experience and success stories others have had.. So I really thought it would work to mention what I did to begin with.. But I guess I was wrong.. - Some people are just not worth the time to argue with.

Some people haven't opened their eyes to the cryptocurrency yet. They probably think it sounds too good to be true. I have only started to find my feet .. I was totally in shock last week when 300euro landed in my bank account :O ... its amazing really, I think id drop dead if I saw 1000 land there lol ;D .. Jokes on them really, they may as well just keep handing it over to Mark Zucherberg... Here its all about 'sharing is caring' :)

Awesome reply. Thank you very much. - I've been a full time freelancer for more than 6 years, almost 7 now actually and the best experience I've ever had, was "back in the days" when I made more than $1000 in 3 days on Steemit. - That was some craaaazy and amaaaazing feelings.

Even though I haven't reached anything near those results since that day, I just can't stop publishing posts and interacting with others here. I truly love steemit.

Ohhh wow , that's amazing !!!.. there is something addictive to waking up , checking to see how your steemit posts are doing. Even though it can just be 20cents :)... it's the anticipation!!.. & it's great encouragement to be creative , that in itself got to be good for our minds! Its a no brainer really!

How is a 400 dollar reward not good? I'm confused.

I hear you.. - That's literally why I stopped arguing with them at the end. I knew that it wouldn't have been worth it. It clearly didn't matter what I was trying to say.. They didn't want to listen.

Thanks for sharing this experience. It truly is amazing that so many millions of people continue to give away their content for free. A good portion of the individuals I share @steemit with always ask fairly quickly into the conversation, "Can I spend my earnings online, or at my local store"? After going through the various procedures to be able to "spend" your earned winnings here, it is usually just too complicated for them to grasp, and they just move on. One thing is for certain, to make this mainstream, the ease in which one can convert to spendable units in whatever country they live, will be key in bringing millions on board.

I couldn't agree with you more actually. Very well said. - I've had a fair share of questions regarding that too, and even though I always try to give them the best possible answer I can.. And even though I offer to help them with the withdrawals, some of them still won't bother.

Well maybe we don't want millions on board? Wouldn't that deflate the value of steem...? And bury quality content?
Also sorry but if someone doesn't wanna take the time to learn it that's on them.

I'm sure there are at least several million people on this planet that would contribute excellent content to the community.

I agree. There's always more to learn. Diversity is good. :) I was just referring more to those who get frustrated with the conversion to spendable $ and don't wish to learn a new skill

Most people are trying to bring more users to Steemit. I guess it would increase the value in general but it would definitely bury content too. As long as the current system are in place.

I think this concept should be common knowledge. You try to explain this stuff to people and get the "that's a scam" or other general lack of acknowledgement. Just bevause they don't understand it. Others say crypto is "too volatile" well ok but so is the stock market rolls eyes

I have tried telling people about steemit. one of my friends had just started doing web design and in their expert opinion, they said the script on the site was sketchy. I stopped caring at that point...

People will always have opinions and that's actually why steemit is such a great place as it is too.. Because we are all unique and we have different thoughts. - Some people are just too ignorant to see what lies in front of them.

Great blog. I am planning to do a blog on the dangers on comparison soon. YOU ARE RIGHT THOUGH comparison can make you miserable. Sounds like your "friends" are superficial. You keep steeming. Upvoted and following

Thank you, I appreciate it! - That sounds like a post I would love to read. I'll follow you for future posts!

Cool thanks for the follow. Appreciate that :)

Excellent perspective! I feel the same way. I just cleared 100 followers today, and have had a few "big pay" posts, but I'm having fun and learning.

I'm glad to hear that! - Now you got yourself another new follower. ;)

As long as you always take a step forwards, even though it might be baby steps.. It will bring you closer the success you're aiming for.

People are always so negative about new things they don't understand. It's why I don't even bother telling people about things anymore unless I really think they will care to listen. Just give it time though, once they see you are successful they will claim you are a genius and wonder why you never introduced them to it before (people have terrible memories about things like this too)...

(people have terrible memories about things like this too)

Which is one of the reasons I wrote this post. ;)

totally agree, i stopped comparing myself with others when i realized i'd never be as tall as i wanted to be. the only thing i could do is to be as good as i can be at whatever i put my hand to and not be overly jealous of others successes (or be overly gleeful over their failures) and try to get better if that is possible and learn more everyday and most of all - stay curious hence my screen name 😉

Nice reply! - I wish I could've given you more than one upvote on this.

that's good enough 😉

Well, take another upvote on that at least ;)

what if u can't get Coinbase to accept your debit card nor Poloniex to send bitcoin to Coinbase?

I'm sorry but I'm actually not the right person to discuss that with. Hopefully someone else could answer this.

Most people will bring up the topic when they are ready to listen, before then don't bang your head against the wall, it hurts.

Well said!

My first weeks in steemit was so joyful ,but now I realise that I spend much less time here... also got bored of all this.. now I know why people leave this platform
