In the head of a serial-killer : Ted Bundy

In the criminological world, the case of serial killers evokes many public reactions. Between horror and fascination, these crimes perpetrated by individuals who are indistinguishable from the masses in the first place have the effect of deeply impressing minds and shocking public opinion. How can it be that in our civilized societies such beings indulge in murder in order to satisfy their lowest instincts ? Are we in the presence of people already predestined to commit this kind of abuse? In order to answer these questions, we will together dive into the depths of the human psyche, analyzing different profiles. Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy's case is strangely linked to several events that occurred during his teenage years. The result of an illegitimate relationship, he discovered his origins at the age of 14, which were then hidden from him by his own grandparents. Indeed, they had taken on the role of his parents during the first three years of his life, while his own mother pretended to be his older sister. It was inadvertently that Ted discovered a birth certificate concerning him, revealing the deceit in the open. A heavy burden was placed on the young man, who very quickly adopted a deviant and rather disturbing behaviour. The teenager quickly took refuge in masochistic pornography. It was not uncommon to see him rummaging through the garbage, looking for any image of a naked female body, or reading novels mixing eroticism and wild murders.

It is through this insatiable desire to go ever further into the forbidden that Bundy developed a strong taste for the macabre. For him, pleasure should be achieved first and foremost through sexual violence. Although he had maintained relationships with various partners, during his university studies, Ted soon gave in to his impulses by committing one of his first crimes in 1969. During a visit to his family, located on the Philadelphia side, the man took action by murdering two women.

A long period of five years passed before he committed another offence. In 1974, Ted's hunting grounds were the various universities in Washington State. His preferred method was to force young female students or unfortunate hitchhikers to board his VW Beetle and thus realize his misdeeds. These were more generally raped and killed. The height of the horror came from Ted's tendency to be satisfied with necrophiliac acts, thus visiting his victims several times in the surrounding forests. A place that he affectionately called a "personal dump". Yes, it's very creepy...

It is estimated that more than a hundred victims crossed paths with this sinister person, although the latter only recognized about thirty of them. This butchery spread over a five-year period, from 1973 to 1978. Several times arrested, following his failed attempt to kidnap the young Carol DaRonch, he managed to escape twice, quite dramatically on December 30, 1977, at Garfield Penitentiary in Colorado. With a law degree, Ted Bundy defended himself but it was only a waste of time as the Florida State Attorney promulgated the death penalty against him in February 1978. He was executed on 24 January 1989 at Florida State Prison, but not without having his own confessions made to various journalists.
