Wading Against the Tide

First month of the New Year. As you know it is difficult to find time to balance all that you would want to do. This is usually the time when people spew out New Year's resolutions. Isn't that what everyone wants to know these days? Can it be as simple as wanting to achieve self peace at all times? Contentment?
I feel that wanting to be content is what most people think they strive for.

But that's a lie.

As a society we are forced by constant crashing waves to move on to the next best thing. We are never taught to be satisfied with what we have right now; only to look on to the next thing we can achieve or gain.

This may be a great strategy in certain aspects and circumstances in our lives such as academia but even in those settings, we see that this mentality begins to overtake our lives and actually becomes a hindrance rather than a strength.

What would happen if we begin to break the cycle? In essence break the norm and begin to just be content with all that we have. Then this would, I argue, pretty much end our society as we know it.

The sad thing is we, as a people, will likely never be able to break out of this routine. We will never have the courage as a whole to fight and swim against the tide. We would be too frightened to drown along the way. We would feel much more safe to float along the current and survive.

But there are rare occurrences where people do swim against this tide. They do not allow themselves to be swept up by the mass. This is what I would love to attempt to achieve. I'm not perfect by any chance and I do not view this as perfection but I do view this as breaking the normalcy that we have come to accept.

And if we break the norm, does that not make us greater than normal?

I argue that it would make us extraordinary.
