Thought Bubble Thursdays #8 - Do we imitate the ones we admire or do we admire them because of our similarities with them?

in writing •  7 years ago  (edited)

It is often said that art imitates life, but what does life imitate? Do we imitate people we admire, or do we admire them because of our own preference? Is it merely as simple as that or are we just beginning to scratch the surface? Really though, is this topic even worth discussing? Am I ever going to stop askin questions as a preamble to my posts? Is this a coping mechanism or a means to save face? While I'm thinking about the answers, how about some Thought Bubble Thursdays?

This was a post that I thought about doing before the end of 2017. I hadn't initially thought of including it to this series, but I feel like it fits right in. This is a question that I've often wondered, and I feel like this resonates to other aspects of life. It's the eighth edition to this series, and I feel like now's a good time as any to diverge from the usual pattern. So, hold on to your horses.

People say that you can tell a lot about someone based on the people and things they like. As to who those people are, I feel like I don't have the liberty to say. But, do people like the things they like because of their own nature, or are they molded by the things that they gravitate towards? For the purpose of this discussion, let's focus on comics and popular culture. To effectively get the point across, I also need to divulge my own preferences. Yes, I need to be careful not to give my passwords away.

I Know De Wei

Pop culture has been a huge factor in my upbringing. So, it's quite ironic that I gravitated towards characters that are not that popular. I say that with a caveat because I'm only basing that assumption through what I've seen in posts, videos, comments sections and forums. Shows and comics that I've supported almost always ended up cancelled mostly because of poor sales. It's tough to even cheer for them since I'm often times in the minority. Well, not that I ever really cheer for them because I have never really been a "die hard fan" of anything. Mostly just of the San Antonio Spurs, but we all know how popular that organization is (a discussion for a different post).

When you think of the X-Men, who normally pops up into your head first? Wolverine? Nightcrawler? Gambit? Heck, nowadays, even Deadpool perhaps? What makes these characters popular? Their gung-ho, too cool for school attitude? Maybe it's their backstories, their eye-catching costumes or cool powers? Would it surprise you to hear that I actually hate Wolverine? Am I going off again with the questions?

When I was a kid, I just thought I preferred the color blue, that's why I gravitated towards characters that sport that color. It was only when I grew older did I realize that I identified with the characters on a deeper level. Characters like Cyclops (who has since shed the blue off his costume) and Leonardo (of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who has a more popular, Wolverine-like brother). In their respective franchises, these two are quite unpopular. Why is that though?

Before he broke out as an internet phenomenon, Knuckles the Echidna (not his Ugandan counterparts) has always played second-fiddle to the more popular Blue Blur called Sonic the Hedgehog. Now, Knuckles fits in the Wolverine mold quite a bit, but his lone wolf status is what gravitated me toward him.

Characters like Hawkeye (the oft-forgotten Avenger), Iron Fist (the oft-forgotten Defender), Kyle Rayner (the oft-forgotten Green Lantern), just to name a few (again, I'm trying to avoid divulging my password) are some of my unpopular favorites. Sometimes I feel like I'm intentionally picking unpopular characters just so I won't have to deal with so many other people who prefer the same characters.

In some cases, characters that I favor take time to get popular. Is it just a case of me being ahead of a trend or is it that the trend just so happened to sway my way? Whatever the case, I usually lose interest whenever a certain character becomes too popular. I don't know why it is. With that being said, it's time to put on your heated wet suit, and let's go down this iceberg!

The -Istics of a Character

What makes characters like Cyclops and Leonardo so unpopular? They're the leaders of their teams, they have cool enough weapons/powers and they're popular with the ladies (wink wink), and yet they aren't received all that well. Is it because they're stickler to rules? Maybe people are deathly allergic of authority? Is being organized unappealing? I've always liked them when I was a kid for some reason, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Back then, I was never really into leadership, even though I was often thrust into that role. I only ever embraced it back in the latter half of college and I haven't looked back since. My groups tend to excel, but my leadership style had a mixed reception. The results were there, but some felt rubbed the wrong way. Did I inadvertently emulate my idols or did I like them because I was inherently similar?

I admired Knuckles because of his sense of responsibility, even though he's often an outcast. Back when I first liked him, I was still a part of large group of friends so I couldn't relate to what he was going through. He never fit in to their society, and yet he did his best to fulfill his duty. Little did I know, it would be a precursor to what would happen to me socially. Was that a self-fulfilling prophecy or was it just a coincidence?

I've written about being constantly forgotten before, and I still have yet to get a handle on it. @dreemit's friend suffers the same fate, so at least I know I'm not alone. Naturally, I would gravitate towards characters who are as often forgotten as I am, right? But, the thing is, I've already supported characters who I didn't realize were oft-neglected even before I realize my own fate. Was it as case of the chicken and the egg? (Bad example, everyone knows the chicken came first)

There are many other similarities all of these characters and I share. Far too much that when you combine all of their characteristics, good and bad, it would look like a representation of... me. I'm not saying that these characters molded the person I am today (or am I?), but maybe (just maybe) I am projecting myself on these characters, the way people project themselves on me.

Would changing my preference change a thing? If I liked more popular characters, would that instantly make me more memorable? Would it change my attitude and how I take on the world? I feel like this post should be re-titled to "The Post with a Hundred Questions", should I change the title to that?

Here I am going on and on about me (again), how about you? What popular characters (or sports teams) do you like? Do they reflect your attitude or do you admire them because you want to be like them? Chime in with with your thoughts below. Let's discuss!

So I have been partaking of some excellent micro brewed 'Kristmas Ale', and all I want to do is say I LOVE YOU MAN!! I do though, I love you to pieces, and anyone who doesn't understand you, doesn't appreciate you, they're just not worth it. They don't have my other super power (I like to think of writing as a superpower) which is spotting the other amazeballs, genuine, fucking awesome people out there in the world. I might not see auras per se, but I feel them, I feel the spirits? souls? Of those I meet, and yours is beautiful, and if I could see it it would be blinding in its magnificence.

Kristmas Ale? How festive! Is this the same one from your other comment? It couldn't be, could it? Every sentiment is very much appreciated (definitely my eyes well up :'D) and the love is certainly shared! Alcohol only serves to bring out the truth! And yes, you definitely have an accurate radar when it comes to spotting the great ones from a crowd! I'm happy that I count myself among them :'D I do strongly believe that you are very much attuned to the spirits. I needed this so badly! If I could just resteem this comment, I would resteem this for days!!

Completely sober right now and I wouldn't change a single line of that, I fucking love you man! Haha, you're right, alcohol is a truth serum!

I wouldn't have it any other way! :D

I hope you don't mind a teensy bit of proofreading. I think you meant Sonic, not Sonice...

Feel free to proofread all you want, man! Any help is welcome. Consider this as proof of your lifetime membership to the Proofreading Club.

I think I really did mean to say so nice there because it's super nice, but thanks. I've made the modifications. I appreciate it. Good looking out!

Sonic is super nice!

I think I figured out why you lose interest in something that starts getting too popular its probably because you don't fit in, that's literally me all the time. I guess when you realize that you're on your own you want to be your own person and tend to like and do things that define you. and when that particular thing becomes come you're just like, meh whatever. And oh yeah cyclops is cool, i mean come on.

That's actually a profound analysis. I agree with it, and I think you're on to something. We do kind of lose our own identity when everyone else jumps on the bandwagon. I guess we wouldn't have survived the hunter-gatherer era of humanity. Thanks for sharing it and for stopping by!

Regarding Cyclops, we're in the minority, but yeah.. he's hella cool!

I, for one, always thought cyclops was cool. In fact, I would say he probably was my favorite x-men growing up. Superman was my favorite overall, but that was mainly because I remember one of my first things I ever got comic book related was a pack of erasers which happened to be superman themed (I thought they were amazing!); plus I grew up watching the Superman cartoons from the 50's(60's?); so I basically had no choice in Superman being my favorite - it was really the only superhero connection I had as a kid.
All of my sports teams are located around me, so I guess that makes sense. Plus OSU (football) is amazing, so hard not to like them; but it is evened out in the state of Ohio with the Browns. One barely loses and one never wins.

Right!? Thank you! Cyclops is cool. Well... was. He does things for the good of others, even though not everyone agrees with his methods. No matter the cost, he gets the job done. That is badass. As for Superman, we've already agreed to disagree on the guy hahaha! But yeah, childhood preference does play a huge factor in it, so yeah.. I won't ever fault you for liking the guy.

Since there are no location-based sports teams here, I chose based on the character of the organization. I did like the Cavs at one point in my childhood, mainly because of Mark Price. I think we discussed that before?

Dunno how much this helps, but they say you are the sum of the 5 closest people you surround yourself with.

There's also another test in which you ask someone, "if you had to be reincarnated as an animal, which one would you be & what are 3 reasons why?" The 3 characteristics they name off are--more often than not--traits they either see in themselves or hope others see in them. Just some food for thought as it may be applicable to some of the characters you tend to gravitate towards pare.

That's definitely interesting. It could apply to the characters I'm closely invested in as well. Great factoid, pare!

For the reincarnation one, I think you're on to something there. Definitely something worthy of deeper exploration. Thanks for sharing those, kapatid! I really appreciate it! :D

My pleasure :)

Well, I like Batman. Always have. Mainstream comics, for me, is Batman and the rest.

I also like Sandman. He is like the non plus ultra of everything. Niche comics, for me, is Sandman and the others.

So, maybe I am really a dark half-crazy anthropomorphous concept dressing as a tiny animal beating the bejeezus out of drunks and stuff.

Wouldn't that be all kinds of cool...

Batman is quite all-encompassing. Heck, I like Batman too. It's safe to say everyone likes Batman haha!

Sandman's making a comeback in DC these days. He's factoring him in with the Batman event title Dark Knights: Metal. Though he's not Dream from Gaiman's Sandman. Rather, he's the Dream that was developed for DC. Basically the same character, but they're not.

That would be cool though. I'm sure if you are, you'd already know it. Unless... you're dreaming about all of that hmm?

hmm my opinion in this which you mentioned too is that the characters that are ''above the authorities'' and in general look badass and don't follow so much the rules are the ones of the most acceptance. Basically, i think this is happening because people would wanted badly to be like them. nobody cares about someone who follows the rules as it is consider somehow normal and the majority of people in real life follows them or some times not and face the consequences.

Also this is happening in real life too. The origin of comics shows that it's first followers were young ages, and in young ages people that look totally badass, have an attitude and do whatever they want are more attracting and appealing to them instead of someone who follows the book of rules like the kids do too.

Personally i really like deadpool mostly because it's hard to kill him and if there was a hero i would like to have it's superpowers will be him except the ugly burns :P just the ''don't die'' part :P and because in real life i like to joke a lot too, i think it suits me :P but in general i don't know some of the series i watched i really liked the villain more than the hero :P

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at as well. Those frustrations that they can't execute in real life. You're probably right in that regard.

See! It kind of reflects, right? Maybe you are more of a villain, and that's not a bad thing. Every character lives in the gray area. Heck, even Deadpool started off as a villain! (He's a villain again by the way because he aligned himself with the Hydra Captain America) Those people who feel like they're flawless heroes are just lying to themselves. Better to have layers in your character than being completely hollow.

hahaha wherever deadpool goes it will be fun :P
the last sentence you typed it basically the reason i think some ''villains'' are closer to me than heroes. Can't always justice prevails without flows, we have seen it in comics-series too, you are hero you caught the bad guy who killed 5 people send him to prison, he escapes kill 2-3 more then again back to prison and we have that circle all over, in that case does actually a hero helps or harms more? :P hahaha that's an idea for a post too :P

By that logic, then Batman is to blame for many deaths in Gotham. You should go write it :D

if i write it, i would be the dead one :P

Haha! Burn! Oh wait..

I bought the first edition of The Tick. Then the Tick got a Saturday morning TV cartoon show, and I watched that before it was cool. Later the Tick got a live-action TV show with Patrick Warburton as the Tick, but my TV was long gone by then. I hear there's a new attempt at the Tick, seems like I saw a preview recently. Anyway, I like The Tick. He's absurd, and I realize he's just a parody and not a real superhero, I like the silly comedy and stereotypes that go with the comic world that the Tick has fun with.
So I gave that issue # 1 of the Tick to my little nephew for his birthday many years ago, thinking it would be valuable some day. I looked it up not long ago, apparently everybody has one! Oh well.

SPOOOOOOOOON!

I love The Tick as well! When they were showing the cartoons, I was too young to fully get every reference. But, I truly liked how he was a parody of the genre. All great fun. Yeah, there's a new one, I haven't watched it yet. But, @artistchristian said it was awesome, so that's definitely in my watchlist.

Just HODL that issue. Who knows, it might be worth Spider-Man's first appearance as well in years to come!

Both, we admire those who have gone far, those who have triumphed, their ability to overcome obstacle and simply succeed, but we also identify with those with whom we share tastes, it is a mixture of both, but of course! we do not all think the same.

You're right! The best thing to do is to just understand each other's stand and respect it. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

[would throw eggs at the people who say chicken came first but I want to eat them]

That wondering if you would be more popular if you liked the popular thing is kind of an interesting question. On the art front, well yes probably, my sister became pretty popular for her fanart of a popular cartoon series, and so had a fanbase that got interested and spread her stuff around when she spun off into her own thing. I did not XD Until I got here anyway :)

Liking characters before they became popular could well indicate being ahead of the trend, I'm kind of interested from a psychological point of view why you would suddenly stop liking characters as much when they go from being not as popular to more popular though XD

And as far as people preferring the Wolverines and Gambits and Deadpools over the Leonardos and Cyclopses (Cyclopsii?), I think that's more a case of everyone wants to be Wolverine or Gambit or Deadpool and flip the bird to authority and just go ahead and do whatever the hell they want and bugger the consequences, but what they have to be is Cyclops or Leonardo which is cool and level headed and responsible and doing things they don't like (or downright loathe!) because family and often beyond idiotic societal expectations. That's my wild guess anyway :)

I kind of got dragged into a real underdog team as far as sports goes. I don't mind wearing the gear as it's my favourite colour, I'm not terribly interested in the actual games except when I was doing some study for AER (I personally would have been quite happy to do without AFL being involved but annoying characters play and work for football teams apparently). They probably reflect how things have been going for me to a degree, they try so damn hard, they even got to the finals once, but they've never won that championship cup at the end. That's...actually rather depressing XD But all we can do is keep on ay :)

goatsig

Woah! Woah! Woah! I know that we're going to have a difference one day, I just didn't know it would be about a chicken and an egg. A CHICKEN then an egg. Well, the parent is not the classical chicken, but it's a pre-chicken. A predecessor, if you will.

Well, in the case of fanbases, I guess that makes sense. People already have something to latch themselves to.

You know, I'm really not sure why haha! I just have that "oh, it's mainstream now, moving on..." feeling, y'know? If you're exploring that pyschologically, I'm okay with being the test subject!

Cyclops or Leonardo which is cool and level headed and responsible and doing things they don't like (or downright loathe!) because family and often beyond idiotic societal expectations

Yes, yes, yes! Oh God, yes! Can we just throw yeses at each other instead of eggs? Also... Cyclopses haha That's my thought as well, they're just living vicariously through the characters.

It's just luck that you stumbled upon that team I guess, why don't switch sides? I mean, as long you're not too invested in them yet.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I could argue semantics but I would lose a philosophical debate and I just realised I should probably not derail things that hard XD

Yeh on places like deviantart the best way to get noticed quickly is to be half-decent in a reasonably popular fandom. You can work in an oversaturated fandom which can yield good results but can also be harder to get noticed in because oversaturated, something that's popular enough that people are looking for it but isn't one that everyone and their various pets are into work a bit better. Unfortunately I'm not really into many of those things.

So are you saying you're an original hipster then? :D

I am not throwing eggs unless it's into cookware. As I said I want to eat them. Do you like scrambled? I'll send the boys out to get the eggs, there'll be enough for all of us. And weren't these characters intended to be lived vicariously through? Wait, does this mean I have to never become popular otherwise you won't like me anymore? :O Am I catching your penchant for asking pertinent possibly rhetorical questions?! Tune in next episode!

goatsig

ps missed a question! Well I've been with this team as long as I've been with JJ so somewhat invested I guess? As in I have gear. And it's one of my favourite colours. The other local team is the same colours as my high school uniform which gets an automatic no from me (sorry other local team XD) and the only other team whose colours I particularly like are an eastern states team. Yes choosing sports teams is totally irrational as far as I'm concerned ;D

An original hipster! Haha! I have been called one before, so perhaps I am. None of those new wave hipsters though, those are the worst.

I take eggs every which way except hard boiled. If anything's hard boiled, it should be me.. in a noir kind of way, that is.

And weren't these characters intended to be lived vicariously through?

I'm not sure if it applies to everyone. There are S&M characters out there haha!

Wait, does this mean I have to never become popular otherwise you won't like me anymore? :O

That's an interesting question! Hmmm.. can I take a beat on this one? Haha!

Am I catching your penchant for asking pertinent possibly rhetorical questions?!

I can't believe that after all the SILVER LININGs you went through, you've only caught the bug now. Have I failed as a contagion?

Regarding sports teams, I guess there's no one formula haha!

Wow. Leonardo and Cyclops? And all along I thought it was Starfox who you could relate to :p

Ohoho oh wait... :/ If I remember correctly, Starfox swings both ways so I could never relate to him haha

LoL that side of starfox, i was not aware of.

I feel like a lot of people aren't haha!

Who said the chicken came first? just asking, the truth is we begin to love what we see people we admire love, sometimes we admire them because of our similarities, sometimes we admire them because we admire what they have come to be, as we really what to be like them. Thanks for sharing

Evolution did. But, I don't want to get into it that much here. I agree with your sentiment. I guess we do all start that way until we get minds of our own. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I appreciate it!

There was just a leadership transition at my job, and I loved my last boss so very, very much. In many ways I felt like he was my big brother, we were very similar and so I was able to learn quickly from him because I could see how he had overcome similar hurdles that I was facing. I love my new leader too, but it’s a different dynamic and I wonder how much of it has to do with this very question?

It has nothing and everything to do with this question! I'm glad you shared it, and I hope that the dynamic between you and your new boss would be even better than with the previous one! :D

What about Moomintrolls? Once Moomintroll fell into the magician's hat and was so changed that only his mother was able to recognize him.
You know what, actually you can't identify with a particular character totally, you like certain characteristics or a particular way how that charater solves problems - that simply means you are normal person.
Besides what's wrong with well organized society where people don't trample each other and try to double-cross everyone. It's hard to live in such a society. I was once told that even criminals have goals - they are just different than those of people not inclined to criminal activity. It's simple, their rules and goals just oppose the rules of society.
So, I catually don't understand the proponents of anarchy (here on steemit and elsewhere). Do they have any dear people? Do they understand how long a person would live who is old and on medications (as many old people are) if the system falls apart? They truly don't know what they are talking about. I don't say that the system is perfect and everything in it, but to advocate destruction is downright blind.

To be honest, I'm not familiar with Moomintrolls. But, thanks for sharing it! I agree with your thoughts, but we can't dictate that same mentality to others. I have explored anarchy, and I realize that it has its own benefits. Not everyone agrees on everything, so the best course of action is to just understand and respect one another.
