For all vocab-a-vores and lovers of language, here's the latest instalment of the Vocab-ability series. (Please see important note below.)
This latest post comprises all the “P” entries. It includes many English words whose etymology can be traced to Greek and Latin roots.
If you learn one root, you can learn, understand, and use each and every English word derived from that root. Vocab-ability is an easy-to-use resource guide to help you understand those roots.
In total, this Vocab-ability post features 27 entries that begin with the letter “P."
Important Note re Upvotes / Comments:
When commenting on these Vocab-ability posts, please try to vary your comments. Simple comments such as “Thank you for this post” or “I like this post” or “Very helpful” seem rather insignificant, particularly if they are repeated below each and every post. Such repetitious comments do not add much value to the Steemit platform and do not enhance your "reputation."
For many of you, English is a second language, and therefore it may be a little difficult for you to write a longer reply. I realize that. But you can use these posts as an opportunity to practice your vocab-ability. When you comment, you can use one of the words in the post. For example, in a comment below this post, you could write something similar to one of the following:
- My vocabulary is not quite “up to par,” but I’m learning more each week.
- These Vocab-ability posts give us the “potential” to improve our language skills.
- My progress “depends” on my diligence.
By using the new vocabulary in that way, you will not only make the comment section more interesting, you will also be using and practicing your new English vocabulary. As a result, you will learn and remember more. (And I might even increase your upvote percentage. ☺)
Be creative, and learn more!
Thanks for all the upvotes and comments. I appreciate the support, and am pleased that you are increasing your English vocabulary and becoming more proficient in the English language.

Thanks for the post @majes.tytyty - An awesome tool chest of words - so many of our words and sayings have deep roots in our past. Words separate us from all other creatures, they helped form our past and they will determine our future as mankind.

Thanks for your great input / comment.
I love that phrase "tool chest of words." Maybe it's my rural upbringing, or the fact that my dad was a carpenter, but the phrase fits and has plenty of significance.
And thanks for that quote. I'd never heard of either that book or Radford, but I've just put it onto my wishlist. The quote alone tells me that I'd devour the book.
If I ever use / borrow the phrase "tool chest of words," I'll be sure to attribute it to you (and share any royalties!!!). But I might revise it to a "handy" tool chest of words, reflecting my rural upbringing.
Cheers!

And a Happy and Prosperous New Year to you, too, even as we watch the implosion of the current financial system.
Let's continue to do what we can to teach, enlighten, and support all those who are near and dear to us (i.e., all of humanity, give or take a few scummy banksters and fraudsters). That will definitely be necessary in these gloomy times.

I take it you are not a big believer in the ability of Central Bankers and Politicians to provide long term value to Fiat Currencies?!? Have you read Ben Bernanke's interesting speech on the power of the printing press and low interest rates as tools to save fiat currency? Here are some excerpts >
"But suppose that, despite all precautions, deflation were to take hold in the U.S. economy and, moreover, that the Fed's policy instrument--the federal funds rate--were to fall to zero. What then"
"the U.S. government has a technology, called a printing press (or, today, its electronic equivalent), that allows it to produce as many U.S. dollars as it wishes at essentially no cost. By increasing the number of U.S. dollars in circulation, or even by credibly threatening to do so, the U.S. government can also reduce the value of a dollar in terms of goods and services, which is equivalent to raising the prices in dollars of those goods and services."

Yes, I think I've read that before, or maybe seen a similar video clip.
Clearly, the asylum is being run by the inmates. For decades now, they've been blowing bubbles, creating illusory wealth, then extracting that wealth.
Each time, the bubble gets bigger and the collapse results in greater losses. And here comes another crash ...

yes, sadly the Titanic has already hit the iceberg and it is only the 'going where no man has gone before' approach of the Central Bankers to lower interest rates to 0% and beyond and to flood the countries with massive paper money drops that has kept it afloat this long.
sadly, in my humble opinion, just like before, there are no rescue ships near enough and big enough to rescue all the passengers and crew of the Titanic.

wow.. I really need to catch up with my vocabulary. I like this series, but may I suggest to make it short and put it into sections, I find all words are too much to take in at one time, it would be nice to learn like daily and fewer words... and I learn one phrase today"up to par". Thank you !

Yes, that's indeed what I intend to do. In fact, I started out doing that about 2 months ago. However, I have about 450 single entries to compile and post, so that would take over 1 full year to get through.
So, I changed my strategy. First, I'm compiling all the entries into these alphabetical series. These can be used to study, but I agree that it is toooooooo much to learn in one shot. But once they are all uploaded to Steemit, they will all be on the blockchain, for eternity! And they will be a handy reference / resource for all language learners.
I was posting 1 / week, but now I'm trying to post 2 / week. I hope to finish these groups and post them all by April.
Then, when I've finished uploading all the ABC groups, I will do daily posts, or maybe two or three times per day. Then, as you suggest, each single entry (text box) will appear as a separate entry. Those single entries will be more conducive to study and learning.
I might even add exercises that allow language-learners to USE the vocab items, not just read them. For each post, I hope to add simple exercises that can be completed in 5 minutes or so. That way, the posts can reinforce the learning process.
As we say, "Use it or lose it." By using the vocab items in a quick exercise, everyone will be able to use it and remember it – not forget it and lose it.
Thanks for your comment and your input, and particularly for your appreciation! I'm very pleased that you find this series useful.

I love your vocabulary posts. I really like how you take the root of the word, put it in the corner and list several examples with their definitions. Par stuck out the most because I absolutely love golf, but sadly sub is in front of it...
I actually sent my girlfriend a few of these posts because she is a teacher. She likes the format as well.

Thanks, glad that you like these posts. And I really appreciate the comment about the formatting. As a (former) teacher, I learned that it's essential to make things clear and easy to understand. That way, the students won't get bogged down in dense text.
For these Steemit posts, I added color, which makes the target words stand out. I call this method "Learn At A Glance." ☺
Tell your girlfriend that I'll be uploading a few dozens more of these vocab group posts over the coming months. Then I'll post the individual entries in daily portions, since more than a few people have suggested that I do one daily post. Posting the entire series will take about a year!
Hope I can do my part to make your girlfriend happy. But that's mostly up to you.
Cheers!

One question, I was checking your wallet history and most of your posts sent SBD to NULL. what does that mean?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

That's when I spent some SBD to promote the posts, which then appear under the "promoted" link on your blog. I'm not sure if it helps to promote one's posts, but I usually spend a tiny bit of SBD for each post just to ensure that I get more exposure in the "promoted" stream.
As for the "NULL" recipient, I read somewhere that all payments for such post-promotion are not actually given or sent to anyone. Those payments are just recycled back into the overall pool of SBD. Therefore, it says "Null."
Hope this clarifies.

No, not really. Promoting a post gets it more exposure, but it may not help build reputation, and it might not even help one earn more Steem or SP. But I do it for exposure and for long-term, future success.

Cool. I'm glad you found this. Please go through all the former posts when you have time.
Actually, since you're a grad student, this series might be quite helpful for you. Most of the vocabulary presented in these posts is ADVANCED-level vocab. I originally compiled this material for my advanced level ESL students. Some of the words might be too high-level for beginner students.
Best of luck as you learn more. And Full Steem Ahead!

I do money seminars from time to time and I enjoy words and their origins.
Salary - from the Latin for Salt. In the days of the early Roman Empire the Roman soldiers were sometime paid in salt - a valuable commodity in those days that could be exchanged for other goods and services. >>> hence the old expression, that man is worth his salt.

From which comes the Japanese word "sarari-man" (that is, "salary-man"). When I taught ESL in Japan, I would often tell my students the origin of that word, in the hopes of motivating them to study more etymology / roots / vocab.
I did not include the root "sal" in the origianal Vocab-ability series, I could come up with only 2 words (besides "salt") that are derived from it – saline and salary. And my cut-off for inclusion was at least 3 words.
I'm debating whether to include it in this Steemit Vocab series. Whadaya think? Should I? Can you think of any other English words derived from "sal"?

check out the origin of the word salad. also salami though this one is stretching it out a bit but still derives from salt / sal.
I find words and their roots can be very interesting and knowing their roots helps to understand them and their offspring better.

Done. Adding salad and salami and "sarari-man," I had a total of 5 examples derived from the Latin. So, I will include it in the "S" post.
Thanks for your input. I find the fact that "salad" is derived from that root fascinating ... just like most other word origins.

@majes.tytyty it took me around 30 mininutes to read the whole post- time well spent. I think it will take me another hour or so to go over it again and take some notes.
Although I consider my English level to be good, I really learnt something. I congratulate you for the time you spent to prepare this post. Keep it up my friend ! Waiting for your next post.
Thank you

Thanks for your comment. Since this is uploaded onto the blockchain, you will always have it as a convenient reference.
You can even click-and-drag each box and make cards of them, which you can carry around with you and flip thru them when you have time. I did that when I was studying Japanese. I found that during each day, I had much open time, when on the train or during lunch break or so, and I always had my Japanese pictogram cards in my pocket.
As for the time spent preparing all this, it's a labour of love. Truly my pleasure.
Best of luck!
