Tiny Houses for the Homeless

Tiny houses are not just trendy dwellings for enviro-conscious millennials and families on a budget anymore. This growing movement is embracing a population that benefits as much or more than any, the homeless.

While traditionally constructed tiny houses on wheels may not be very practical for someone surviving on the streets, portable survival pods, like those being built in Florida, Utah and upstate New York are providing a viable option for many homeless Americans.

In Austin TX, the vision goes beyond just providing individual units in the form of a 200 unit community being developed to help chronically homeless Texans find some stability. Alan Graham of Mobile Loaves and Fishes is the man behind the plan.

“We haven’t converted everybody, but when people come out here they go, ‘Oh!’ They see a chapel; they see medical and vocational services on site, and they learn that residents will not live there for free; they’ll pay a monthly rent.”

So far they have attracted 100 residents to their 27 acre development and things are going well, boasting a nearly 90% success rate at getting and keeping people off the streets! It’s estimated that getting 200 homeless back on their feet and off of public assistance programs could save the Lone Star State about $10 million dollars each and every year!

In Rochester New York, Rochester Greenovation is working to design a tiny house that can be built from salvaged materials, making construction free with donated labor. The homes would use typically scrapped lumber, such as old pallets, and discarded windows.

Greenovations is dealing with more than just the shelter aspects as they think it through. They have discussed options for heating, sanitation, cooking, and location and transportation of the shelters.
Utah resident Gary Pickering was once homeless himself for six years. Out of that experience came his concept for survival pods for the homeless. Utah’s northern climate can mean harsh winters, with those suffering from exposure often not surviving.

Pickering built his first survival pod for a homeless man he spotted walking in the cold one day, but later could not find him to deliver his gift. Pickering’s latest efforts include creating videos demonstrating salvage and construction techniques that he hopes homeless people will be able to use to build their own shelter.

Some have suggested that Gary develop his idea into a business, but that was never his intention. Instead, he hopes that those with means would help them to build their own shelters and work with the homeless to pay off the cost over time.
“I didn’t do this as a business, I don’t want a business. I want to inspire other people

7 Leadership Traits You Should Be Hiring and Developing Starting Today

Your company may have the best recruiting network in your industry. You may even couple that with near legendary retention rates, but finding and holding onto quality people will mean very little without developing the kind of internal leadership traits that create greatness through inspiration and creativity. After all, doing the same things in the same way may lead to consistency, but it rarely leads to overwhelmingly successful companies. So how do you attain this kind of leadership?

There are two primary methods for getting great leaders. You can go out and find, recruit and install leaders who already do what you do well, or you can develop that kind of leadership within your own organization. The most successful companies do a balance of both. Bringing in leaders from outside can work well, but consistently finding that caliber of talent can be tough. By instituting a leadership training mentality, you can learn to grow your own.

Home grown leaders, in addition to costing less in many cases, are already invested in your company culture. By cultivating the leadership skills that lie dormant throughout your workforce, you can build stronger, more productive workers, who will be ready to take on the new challenges of leadership roles when the time comes. Here are seven leadership traits that you should be looking to find and develop in potential leaders.

  1. Extroversion: According to a meta-analysis study spear headed by Timothy Judge, Ph.D., a professor of Business at the University of Notre Dame, extroversion is the best predictor of leadership effectiveness This may be due to the ease with which they assert themselves, the fact that others more naturally see them as leaders, or a combination of traits.
  2. Conscientiousness: Among research studies on leadership traits, the one common factor that nearly all successful leaders possess to some extent, is the personality trait of conscientiousness. Conscientious individuals are typically well organized and plan ahead. They face adversity head on and are good at overcoming their own impulses.
  3. Communication: This one may seem like a no-brainer, but when assessing communication skills, it is important to remember that it is a two way street. A huge part of being an effective communicator is receiving and implementing feedback. Many who are great presenters are lousy communicators, because they fail to factor this in.
  4. Creativity: In business, this can be a scary word. Experimentation is often seen as risky and does not always fit within established protocols. It is important to build trust when extending the freedom to be creative in developing creative leadership traits.
  5. Positivity: Having a positive outlook is one of the most helpful leadership traits. Not only is it attractive to others, but it is an essential trait for those who want to be open to all possibilities. Negativity tends to limit ideas and choices, while positivity opens your company up for innovation and the development of new ideas.
  6. Intuition: The ability to feel out solutions without being led by cold hard data can be invaluable. A good leader is one who instinctively understands the structure and flow of his organization. While data is good, sometimes even with it, it takes an intuitive leader to choose the right direction.
  7. Confidence: Confidence as a leadership trait is not always easy to ascertain. While it’s important to be confident enough to assert yourself, leaders should possess that quiet confidence that allows them to stay the course when others waver.

Most of these leadership traits are naturally occurring personality traits that may be developed long before they enter your talent pool. On the other hand, most of them can be learned and improved upon. By seeking to develop these traits, you can assure yourself of a solid pool of potential leaders to meet your company’s needs.

It's great to see people starting to take payment in STEEM I just wrote a post about that
https://steemit.com/steem/@highlite/would-you-be-willing-to-take-steem-or-sbd-instead-of-paper-money

You should post an ad on SteemSwap.com, it just started but it's free, really simple, just like craigslist.

I may do that. Right now, I am still trying to streamline the process of converting to spendable cash. Once I have that down, I'll be more excited about getting a lot work for steem. HA

I know this is a VERY old post, @markrmorrisjr, but does this kind of service work here? I had a similar idea when I first joined - offering content creation or editing services, but I wasn't sure how to go about doing it.

I got 0 response.

Okay but you can't even spell

Okay, asshole, I checked. Every damn post you've put on this site has been a negative comment about one of my posts. So, who the hell is this and what the hell is your problem with me?

Nothing moves me to comment quite like complete ineptitude and an associated sense of arrogance.

No, you haven't commented on anything else on this platform. Not once. So, who are you?

Like I said...nobody else does everything so wrong and yet professes to be brilliant at it. It's fascinating.
