Finals: The Dolbin School Book 4
I am serializing my next book here first before it is available anywhere else. Previous chapter links available at the bottom of the post. Summary: Jake and his friends leave for the summer.
Chapter 27--The Helicopter Pad
“The landing pad. Have a good summer Mr. Daniels and Mr. Cooper.” The electronic voice said.
The boys walked out of the elevator. The air was warm. A light breeze blew through opening of the awning. Mrs. Brisby was standing by a thick yellow line. Several students leaned up against the wall with their baggage, as they waited underneath the awning.
Bruce and Red were sitting on their luggage, leaning their back against the wall.
“Hey look! It’s Cooper and Daniels!” Bruce announced. His smile was as warm as the spring air. He stood up from his baggage and jogged to Jake.
He leaned in and gave Jake a hug, “You have a great summer man!” He patted Jake on the back.
“Daniels you have a great one! Tell your awesome Dolbin ball playing parents I said hey!” He picked Mark up and shook him.
“Uh, okay, thanks. You can put me down now.”
Bruce put him down.
Mrs. Brisby put a finger to her ear, and she nodded her head. She turned and pointed to Bruce. “Mr. Johnson, your helicopter with your parents is coming now. Get your things and come on over here to this line.”
Mrs. Brisby pointed to a yellow rectangle with the words, “Students wait here,” stenciled in the middle.
“Well, I guess it’s my time.” He waved. Turned around picked up his stuff and headed to his place.
The copter rose silently over the edge of the platform. It landed gently, the side door opened. The attending suitman came out first. He turned and offered his hand, Mrs. Johnson took the hand and stepped down out of the helicopter. She was tall, her black, thick hair pulled back in a ponytail.
Mr. Johnson appeared next. He was only a couple of inches taller than his wife. He was muscular. The Dolbin Polo couldn’t hide his strong arms.
Bruce waved to his parents. He turned and waved at Red, and then at Jake and Mark. He ran to greet his parents. They hugged each other. They turned around and got back on the helicopter. The helicopter rose into the air and flew away silently.
Red’ family arrived next. He went to the second landing area and waited. His parents appeared, and it was obvious they were his parents. Both had bright red hair and their face were sprinkled with freckles. His mother was skinny, like him, her red hair was straight and pulled back, and was long enough to reach her lower back. His father’s hair was wavy and parted on the left side.
Red turned around and yelled to Jake. “Cooper! Have a good summer! Daniels. Look forward to getting to spend a whole year with you next year.”
Jake and Mark stayed behind the lines and waved back. “Have a great trip!” Mark shouted.
Red turned around and went to greet his family. They hugged and were escorted back into their helicopter. The door closed and the helicopter silently lifted off and flew into the morning sky.
“Mr. Jacobs, your family will be landing in area three.”
Cal got his things, and he turned to Henry, “Thanks a for a good first year,” he gave Henry a high-five.
“Try not to short circuit the helicopter on the way home,” Henry replied.
Cal turned to Mark and Jake. “Have a cool summer. It will be good to have you two around for a whole school year next year.
Cal’s helicopter landed. Cal greeted his parents, got into his helicopter and flew off.
“Mr. Cho your family will be arriving here at area one.”
Henry stood up and put his bag over his shoulder. He put his hand out to Jake and Mark.
“Guys, I look forward to getting into a lot more trouble next year with you!”
Jake smiled, “Thanks, I think. I don’t want to be on Glover’s bad list for a long time.”
“Try to practice your running this summer, so I don’t beat you too bad next year,” said Mark.
“How about you just practicing running with falling and breaking your leg,” Henry smiled and he pointed at Mark. Jake laughed.
“Well played,” Mark replied.
The helicopter landed. Henry turned to face the helicopter and waited for this family to appear. The door opened and they appeared. Henry ran to them. He didn’t turn back to wave to Jake or Mark. He got into the helicopter. The vehicle silently rose into the air and disappeared over the edge of the building.
Jake and Mark looked around at the other students. Thirty other students that were waiting for their parents. Each chatting and smiling.
“Mr. Daniels, your parents will be arriving next,” said Mrs. Brisby. The words startled Mark. He looked a Jake.
“Have a good summer man.” He looked at his feet. Jake stood quietly.
“Mr. Daniels, your parents will be arriving at landing area number two, I am going to need you there.”
Mark picked up his bag. And he headed to the area.
Jake followed Mark.
“Mr. Cooper, I only need Mr. Daniels there in that rectangle.”
Mark stopped and look at Jake. He turned and kept walking toward the rectangle. Jake continued to follow him.
“Mr. Cooper! Only Mr. Daniels is to be there.”
The helicopter landed and the door opened. Mark kept walking. And so did Jake.
“Mr. Cooper!” Mrs. Brisby spoke again. But she glanced and saw Mr. and Mrs. Daniels, “Oh, fine Mr. Cooper. I’m tired. Go ahead!”
Jake smiled and jogged to Mark where he was waiting.
Mark and Jake hugged tightly.
“Mr. Daniels your parents are here and they are waiting,” shouted the suitman.
“Hi, Jake!” yelled Mr. Daniels.
Jake waved.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniels ran to the boys, Mrs. Daniels hugged Mark. Mr. Daniels looked Jake square in the eye and shook his hand. “I am glad you two were here together. Your parents and us were afraid that only one of you were going to develop your skills. I am relieved that you both came here within days of each other. I am glad you two had each other.”
Mrs. Daniels stood up and hugged Jake, “Thank you for helping him.” She said into his ear.
She held onto Jake for a while.
“Mom, you can let him go now,” Mark said.
She let him go. Her face was red, her eyes teary.
The suitman standing near them stepped forward. “I’m sorry Mrs. Daniels, but we need to be getting aboard the helicopter.
She nodded her head, “Of course.” And she put her hand to her mouth.
Mark rolled his eyes. “I’ll message you tonight.” He waved, and turned around to follow his family.
The helicopter took off silently and disappeared into the fog above the school.
Jake stood for a second by himself on the pad.
Mrs. Brisby spoke loudly and firmly, “Mr. Cooper, I need you off the area. A new helicopter will be there in a moment.
Jake woke up and acknowledged Mrs. Brisby, “Yes, ma’am.” He walked away from the area. He headed back to his luggage. His close group of friends were now away.
He saw Mrs. Brisby standing beside Area One. Jake walked over to Mrs. Brisby and stood beside her.
“Can I help you Mr. Cooper?”
“Thank you for a good first year,” Jake replied.
Mrs. Brisby took her eyes off the horizon, and glanced at Jake.
“Your welcome. But Mr. Cooper, you really haven’t had a full year with me yet. You’ve only worked with me a few weeks. Let’s see if you are still thankful after your fifth grade year.” She put her finger to her ear. “Mr. Cooper, you were lucky. Get your stuff, your family will be here on Area One.”
Jake went and got his luggage and stood where he needed to be. The helicopter appeared out of the fog and descended onto the landing circle.
The door opened and the suitman jumped out first. He turned and assisted Mrs. Cooper out. Mr. Cooper jumped down next. They ran to Jake and hugged him tight.
His mother looked around, “I’m sorry, has Mark and your other friends already left? Are you waiting here alone?”
Jake looked around and shook his head. “I’m not alone anymore.”
