“Daddy we can’t leave yet.”
We were at the pool when she said these words. It was time to go. Supper needed to be fixed, bedtime routines were just around the corner. Sunburn was beginning to set in.
My kid at the beach.
“Daddy we can’t leave yet. I haven’t made a friend yet.”
My daughter is an only child. I wish she had a brother or sister. But that’s just not how life has turned out.
She loves people. So during the summer time a lot of the time she is just stuck with me and her mother.
Poor kid.
Consequently, she has developed the ability to make friends with just about any child, doesn’t matter the age. She has no fear in the introducing yourself department. She walks right up to a child, “Hi! I’m Rachel.”
Even if the other child rejects her she just moves on to another child. She has no fear of friendship rejection.
And she does this with children younger than her or bigger ten-year-olds, it doesn’t matter.
We had spent most of our pool time practicing jumping into the water from the side. Jump, splash, swim back, climb-up, repeat.
So when it was time to go, I was informed we couldn’t leave. She hadn’t made a friend yet. I didn’t take it that she was lonely. I took it has a statement of fact. She hadn’t made friend yet.
Clearly we can’t leave yet.
I wish I had that ability. I honestly have no idea how she developed this ability.
I am so thankful that she has it. I wish I had it. I wish more people had it.
So, we stayed for a few minutes.
She made a friend, and we went home.
"She has no fear of friendship rejection." That's a great quality - one I could use a little more of sometimes.

I remember when I tutored a 4th grader I toke him to play at the park and was amazed as well at how easy is it for kids to just make friends by playing together, and when we grow up most of us are just afraid of approaching people we don't know.

I'm just starting to do something like this now. I attend meetups where you can share your passion and meet people who might share the same interests. At first I was shy but when you start to talk to the first person, the next one will be a lot easier. We just need the courage to spark a conversation. :)

She'll go far with that kind of fearlessness, but it sounds like she is dependent on making friends. Why must she always make a friend? What does it do for her? What happens if she cannot make a friend?
