Reading Charles Bukovski's story ( THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN TOWN)

I read a story by Charles Bukovski THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN TOWN and feel conflicted about it. Oh…It is well written all right: the conversation is natural and the characters are vivid, etc.

But I was left with the number of questions. They could perhaps have simple answers and their very emergence was due to the cultural differences and me being not a native speaker.

This story is about a working man, who was lucky to be noticed by the most beautiful girl in town. He was chosen not by his looks, for, according to his own judgement, he had an ugly face; but by something else. As she put it, he had an interesting face.

I guess the demarcation line was passing in this story by the protagonist’s interest in "her" rather than in her body alone, while as all other men in town interested in her body only.

And this is where there was a sticking point for me. Her pretense of being some special person.
The only thing about her that stood out was the fact that wanted to be appreciated (for her personality I guess) and not only for her beauty alone. Beyond that, I didn’t see anything special about her personality. In other words, should she not be that beautiful, the protagonist might not even pay attention to her, simply by her personality. What was so special about her besides her body? I didn't get it.

Maybe this was Bukovsky’s point of all alone?

Curious about someone else's opinion.
