The evening wore on and the waiter brought another drink for her, courtesy of Etienne and Red was beginning to relax and enjoy herself but she did wonder why a not-Wolf was hanging with Darius’s cronies and she wondered what he was up to this time.
Red was about to leave when a man sat beside her, he sat very close considering that there was plenty of room on the sofa as someone had just got up to dance. Red waited for whatever it was that he was going to say and was surprised when he handed her another drink. She looked over to where Etienne had been standing, assuming that she had sent him but Etienne was not there. She was either dancing or had already left the club.
“I asked the barman what you were drinking. I hope you don’t mind?” He held the glass out for her and she looked at it and then at his glass and realised that they were drinking the same.
“And I hope that you don’t mind if I ask you to swap drinks.”
“Not at all,” he said and offered her the other glass.
Red reached over him and took the one that he had offered to her first. She smiled at him and said, “Just checking.” And smiled again as he laughed.
“Red, you don’t change. You were always paranoid, which is perhaps why you have managed to survive this long as Sentinel Exemplar!”
He was still laughing as she sipped her drink and studied him over the rim of her glass as she tried to remember him.
Then he realised that she did not recall who he was and he sat forward on the sofa and turned to look at her directly so that she could see him better and in doing so, he made certain that the Wolves that were watching couldn’t see his mouth and so couldn’t read what he was saying to her.
“Sentinel, please don’t say that you have forgotten me?”
Red scrutinised his face again and then it dawned on her who he was.
“What does Steve want?” She asked him, still keeping the smile on her face as she realised that he was a messenger.
“You do remember then. I’m so pleased. He leaned forward and bent to kiss her cheek and as he did, he whispered “To Victoria’s.”
“I hope you have a car because mine is at home.” Red said as they stood. She drained her glass and set it on the low table that sat in front of the sofa. “It seemed such a shame to waste that.” She told him as she led him from the club by the hand.
She knew that Vladimir and his group had been watching her but she didn’t know how many others that were in the club had also been watching – or for whom.
Her new companion had left his car outside, parked on double yellow lines and she was pleased at his foresight. They could make their exit with little or no fuss and anyone following would more than likely have to grab transport from further afield, giving Red and her escort plenty of time to get gone.
As they drove away from the club, Red’s escort held his right hand out to her and made proper introductions. “Hello Sentinel Exemplar, I am Guiseppe or Joe for short.”
“Hello Joe, I’m Red but I think you already know that. I assume that you are from Italian descent?”
He nodded, “Yes and for the sake of reassurances, I have been sent by Steve on the orders of the Lycaeon.”
Red was instantly on higher alert and asked what had happened.
“I’m not certain but the Lycaeon and Head of Security are both concerned. I believe it is something that has happened in the world of Humes.”
“Why would the affairs of Humes bother Steve or Victoria?” Red wondered out loud. She stopped speaking and pondered for a moment. “Never mind, I suppose it will all become clear soon enough.” That was what she said, but what she thought was I would bet that Darius is behind it somehow!
Joe didn’t drive fast and he took a long and indirect route to their destination. Red knew why and she didn’t question him but it took more than an hour to get to Victoria’s and she knew that they would be waiting for her.
When they at last arrived at Victoria’s house, the door was opened and they went inside. They left Joe’s car at the front of the house and were shown into the conference room where Red sat at the table but Joe stood to one side. She saw Steve, Head of Security standing close to the Lycaeon – Victoria - and Red nodded to him.

I wonder, Lord grey does not like the Lycaeon, and would like to see her replaced. it would seem though that The Lycaeon is aware of the issues with lord Grey. Like they say, Interesting Times.

They are 'friends' of old... I'm not saying more because you may wish to read Deadlier... and that would spoil the story if I explained :)

I will wait. I need to break my kindle back out. Amazon gave me some lawsuit credits to spend.
