The Benin Empire dating as far back as the 11th century was one of the oldest and we'll developed states in the western region of Africa. After several attempts, in 1897 it's capital Benin City was destroyed by the British.

The Benin Empire was a pre colonial empire situated in where is now referred to as southern Nigeria with its capital being Edo, now known as Benin City.

The Benin Empire was one of the oldest and we'll developed states in the coastal hinterland of the western region of Africa, dating as far back as the 11th century until 1897 when it was destroyed by the British Empire, this is according to historians.

The Benin Empire was first known as Igodomigodo and their ruler was called Ogiso.
According to the Guinness world record, 1974 edition, the walls of Benin City and it's surrounding kingdom were the world's largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era.

Estimated by the new scientist's Fed Pierce described Benin City's walls at one point to be "Four times longer than the Great Wall of China and consumed a hundred ed times more material than the Great Pyramid of cheops.

Benin known for its magnificent art works of portrait figures, busts and groups created in iron, carved ivory especially in brass which is conventionally called the "Benin Bronzes" was carted away by the British after the Benin invasion of 1897.
This lead to the demise of the once great Benin Empire.
