A Candle Uminded
If there aren’t any ears around
A falling tree will make no sound
A pot of water on the boil
Will cause your eyes unending toil
For it will look and sound and seem
To produce no wisp of steam
These are sayings we know well
And ‘pon their truth don't often dwell
Understood both far and wide
To deep within fact reside.
But what of all the other words?
That sing as true as the birds
What of candles unobserved?
Their recognition well deserved
For if they burn without mind
Ash and smoke they’ll leave behind.
This idea all should heed
So plant in love this little seed
Of words not yet writ or said
That float as nothings in the head
Whose meaning is both sound and right
Even before they’ve seen the light
If left alone inside to rest
Will burn a hole clear through your chest.
