Chapter 3, Two Mondays

My morning was a sluggish and slovenly mess that actually began in the afternoon. I had made the extremely wise decision that an entire bottle of Glenlivet fifteen-year would be my activity for the rest of the evening prior, to which I succeeded in completing while playing continuous rounds of first-person shooter games into the early hours. This resulted in me sleeping drunkenly through the alarm intended to wake me up at 10 o’clock in the morning.

It wasn’t quite the crisis it could have been had I been required to be at work today, but I had put in notice in advance at my current job that I would be out today for a medical appointment that didn’t actually exist. This was a routine I took advantage of from time-to-time on Friday, in order to extend my weekend, something that I was extremely grateful for at the moment.

Though it would have been much better not to be in such a state this late into the afternoon as I still intended to call my shadowy new employer today and hopefully get resolution on whether or not I was in fact involved in some type of scam. Which is exactly what I assumed was going on.

I forced myself to abandon the refuge of my bed and ungracefully stood up, kicking across the room the empty corpse of the Scotch bottle I had for some reason placed on the floor. After stumbling into the bathroom and rinsing last night’s lingering scents away in a blissfully warm shower, I got dressed and ate a small breakfast of eggs and orange juice.

Slightly refreshed, but still very much in the fog of my current hangover, I retrieved the scratch pad which I had written down the phone number on the night prior. The time was 2:46 PM and I assumed this was still plenty of time to contact the company within their business hours. I scrolled through the mess of rantings Coria had sent me late last night, realizing I had very little memory of most of the conversation after Glenlivet came into play.

At some point during my inebriation I had written a poorly-typed message to her stating everything would be fine and not to read so much in to astrological complexities. This appeared to have been the correct response as a simple smiley face emoji had been her reply and the ranting had stopped at 1:39 AM. At least I could assume Coria would be in a pleasant mood today.

It was time to get the phone call over with. I sat down on my brown leather loveseat and sank into the familiar mold I had created through the years of video games and typed the number into my phone. The phone rang six or seven times but was eventually picked up and an irritated male voice came across the line.

“Ling Logistics, Hello?”

“Hi I’m— Uh— this is Mr. Leveret calling for a Mr. Yun?”

“Oh. Yeah. Mr. Yun wanted you to start here two Mondays from now.”

“Ok, I can do that. Where are you located—“

“That’s Monday the tenth.”

“The tenth. Yeah, ok got it—“

“Be here at nine ok?”

“Sure.”

“We’ll email you the address and paperwork. Just bring it with you.”

“Alright. See you then—“

The irritated man had hung up the phone and the hurried exchange had left me somehow feeling less confident than I had before calling. Ling Logistics at least sounded legitimate and I decided that I would do some sleuthing on the Internet about the company prior to deciding whether or not I was actually going through with this.

I pulled my laptop from under my coffee table and opened it up, clicking the circular power button I sat patiently waiting for the system to boot up. Once logged in, I opened the web browser to the Google website and decided to see what I could find doing a simple search. I typed in the name of the company but before I sent the search request, my mobile vibrated loudly.

I had just received a new email.
