Creative Nonfiction is an experimental film by Lena Dunham. Truthfully, the way she shot and presented this film is almost as if a child made this film. It seemed like she wrote, directed, and edited the entire film in one whole week, which is a very short time in the life of film making. Although, Lena Dunham is out there and she possesses strong ideas, she is not a good filmmaker nor do I believe she has the qualities that possess her to become a great filmmaker. I just can’t put her on the same list as Spielberg, the Cohan brothers, Scorsese, Kubrick, and so on. The only credit that I can give her is that she is not afraid to present herself in a way to grab attention and make her stand out as a writer or “filmmaker.” The film is about her character, Ella, who is possibly in love with Chris even though he does not love her. She then finds out that her neighbor, Carly, slept with Chris. Towards the end of the film, she ends up sleeping with Ty, this nerdy dude with Nintendo underwear. Film professor Ray Carney, of Boston University, says that there is magic and truth from the beginning of the film. What Dunham seems to be conveying is the type of person her character, Ella, is and the truth she brings out from herself.
From the beginning of the film, we see how awkward, perky, and dorky Lena Dunham’s character, Ella, is. In one of the first scenes, Chris was sleeping on the floor over at her house because a mold problem at his house, and she makes him come up to her bed to sleep next to her. After he go up to her bed and sleeps next to her, to break the awkwardness, Ella shows Chris her plush toy puppy. “This is my dog. His name is Dog.” By saying this, Ella shows us how desperate she is to relief this feeling of awkwardness that she has created. It is almost hard to watch her say that. The scene quickly changes right after that into them cuddling while Ella is uncomfortable but claims to be comfortable. This also reminds me of Dunham’s short story First Love. Lena’s character was in love with her gay boyfriend, but the guy kept pushing her away. The plot’s for both stories are almost identical.
Ella seems to be lonely and longing for love or a relationship. She shows traits of these feelings towards the middle of her film. She practically threw herself at Chris after coming home drunk but Chris still did not want to have any part of. They made out a little before Chris’ face turns into pure awkwardness. During this awkwardness she says, “I wasn’t assuming you were attracted to me. I wasn’t making that assumption. I just understand not being attracted to someone that doesn’t want to make out.” This quote she states here clearly makes her look very lonely and longing for some affection and love. Maybe it shows that she is a little desperate for love too. The look of Chris’ face shows discomfort and almost pain of the awkwardness.
Ella seems to also be a very kind and a very fearless individual. This also made her character so controversial and very honest. She was not afraid of people’s thoughts of her and believes. For instant, in the scene where she was pitching the idea of her script to the dean chairmen of her program, she did not take to heart what her dean was telling her. “She’s in the cabin for three years? Well, either the cabin is really remote or this woman is really stupid.” For someone to say that to someone about a script they just pitch, especially for a teacher or school dean to put a student down like that is not only horrible but also traumatizing for the student. Imagine telling the plot of your screenwriting script to a professor or department chair of your program and they shut your idea down or say it is stupid, how would you feel? Ella did not seem to be bothered or discouraged from the attitude shown by her dean. Which shows how fearless she is of what others say or think about her. To be fearless is to accept harsh critics from peers and superiors. She does just that.
Although it is obvious that the character by Lena Dunham is controversial, Lena Dunham has made a name for her and created a unique image on TV of herself. With her success of HBO show Girls and her many shorts and skits make her a success in Hollywood. Though I believe that she should of spent more time on Creative Nonfiction, she seemed to dazzle everyone else with this film. Some even consider this film powerful. I consider it as a ‘try-again’ experimental film. However, I do agree with Professor Ray Carney for saying that there is magic and truth in this film.
