Common name: Flute of Hallucination
Memory length: N/A
Danger rating: High
Description:
V-D091 is a small, wooden flute of strange construction. The unusual shape suggests it to be homemade, while alternatively, it can be noted it is finely polished and resilient to scratches, suggesting professional craftsmanship. Historians have been consulted to determine the origins of it's design, and so far, nothing has been found confirming where this type of instrument originated from. Currently, it is suspected to be one of a kind.
V-D091 was first discovered in the Ruins of Sog, though it was actually recovered on a different expedition to the Twisted Bridges. Reports on why it was not contained on the first expedition or how it was discovered on the second expedition are woefully insufficient in explaining what happened, and the participants of that expedition have been reprimanded.
Combat and abilities:
As with all Demiforms, V-D091 appears to be nothing more than an inanimate object at first glance. However, it exhibits some short range levitation abilities, and will perform this even while under direct observation. When someone is nearby, it will frequently fly right into their hands, as if it wishes to be played. Whispering voices can be heard while holding the object, though at the time of this writing, no one has been able to decipher even what language it is speaking in.
Playing V-D091 can cause a variety of chaotic effects. In some cases, the effect is something as subtle as making the surrounding listeners slightly dizzy. Other times, it has summoned hallucinatory demons of incredible strength to slaughter anyone in earshot as long as the music continues. Whether or not these demons are actually visible to the listeners, the musician, both, or neither varies wildly. Even playing the same song twice has produced at least slightly different results.
Due to the unpredictable nature, Subcognizant class Vorpals are usually selected as the test subjects, with no other humans being in the area to hear the sound. Oddly, it affects Vorpals in ways comparable to how it affects humans, which is a rarity among Demiforms. Anyone playing the flute seems to be largely unscathed by whatever is played, though some tests have shown they are at least partially susceptible.
Skilled musicians can typically elicit stronger effects. One musician managed to create a cyclone of fire, incinerating all test subjects, while another completely altered the perception of test subjects in a fashion similar to being very heavily intoxicated or drugged. The effect wore off after one day for the musician, and three days for the test subjects. Unskilled or untrained musicians usually get rather tame results, such as causing a test subject to trip unexpectedly or lose their train of thought.
The limit of V-D091's influence is entirely unknown, and presumably can affect everyone who hears it and anything within range of its sound. The most radical effect that can be achieved, or if certain effects can be predictably reproduced, is also unknown. The most extreme effect currently achieved, though never replicated, was the instantaneous implosion of an entire area, resulting in the transmutation of the air into durable solid matter of unknown origin.
Conclusion:
Under no circumstances should this instrument be played without all safety protocols strictly enforced. For this reason, it is currently contained at the auxiliary site under high level security, and is never to be removed from the facility without proper authorization.
