Keep Doing Good - [Tears of Okon]

in writing •  6 years ago

Okon lived in a small town of Akpaidem, and after the demise of his father, he moved to stay with his uncle who is a retired army captain - you know what it means to live with someone with a military background; "obeying the last order" was like a hobby to him. No wonder he grew up with a high level of discipline and faithfulness; even in little things.

After completing his secondary education, he got admission into the prestigious West African College of Technology and Engineering to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. On completing his studies, he emerged top of his class, which made him to bag some awards. And not too long, he got a mouth-watering job with the National Centre for Planning and Urban Development (NCPUD).

While working, he was faithful and dedicated to his assignment, which made his boss to assign him to head some major constructions in the city; including the second Niger bridge, which is a standing edifice. But after some years of maintaining a clean sheet, some little foxes crept in through the wrong advices of his corrupt colleagues. They kept telling him stuffs like: "Hey Okon, why don't you cut funds from the project" or "top money to the budget" or "use substandard materials for construction, and save enough bucks from the allocation"...

After hearing all these chants for a while, Okon gave in. A project arose for him to build a three-storey building. He decided to use cheap materials to construct it (knowing that it wouldn't stand the test of time), but at least, he would cut some bucks from the projects. On completion of the project, he reported to his boss, but something unexpected happened. At the general management meeting; the CEO called him out to award him for all his years of tireless service. In the words of the CEO: "Mr Okon, you've served the company so well, and the management has decided to gift you the last building you constructed for the company as a way to show appreciation". Now Okon has been left in tears because the building was constructed poorly and with substandard materials.
