Stop looking for the light and be the light to help illuminate the world.

My parents use to help people whom we didn’t know and when I asked why they helped strangers they always said that person is someone’s son, daughter, mother or father. When I help them I say a prayer that one day when my child needs help someone will help them.

One day a tornado struck our small town when my sister and I were teenagers and active in after school activities. My sister was walking home from school and the sky darkened and the tornado struck our small town. A woman driving home who was aware of the tornado spotted my sister walking and although she didn’t know her, she stopped and picked her up. Then she took my sister to her home and my sister joined their family in their basement to wait until the storm passed.

My parents worried through out the storm and afterwards we searched for my sister frantically. We found her and as my mother held her in her arms and kissed her head, she thanked the woman repeatedly for stopping to pick up my sister and take her home. I will never forget what the woman said next. She said “I was scared to pick her up because I didn’t know her, but I thought she’s someone’s daughter just like mine. So I stopped and took her home.” My mother cried tears of joy and thanked the woman again. Every building on that street was destroyed on that day and thirty people died. My family feels that if that woman hadn’t picked my sister up that day, she would have died.

I understand my parents better now and I try to follow their example. I saw this quote somewhere online; “Stop looking for the light and be the light to help illuminate the world.” I truly believe the light is someone trying to change the world into a better place. Perhaps we should all stop waiting for someone else to change the world and be the change we seek.

Shortsegments is a blogger or writer on the Steemit platform, where writers, photographers and video bloggers, along with other content producers get paid for posting their content. Steemit is a decentralized social media platform on a blockchain called Steem. A very important difference between Steemit and centralized platforms like Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, is that there isn’t a central authority or owner to take your account away from you and your account can’t be deleted. You are the owner of your account. Find out more at this Link

Steem Onboarding helps you apply for an account and is a series of videos which explains how Steemit works. You don’t need to understand everything about the blockchain to post content and our Onboarding help is available in six different languages.
