Say What You Mean

in writing •  7 years ago

Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle" has been in my head the last few days.

Lovely song... but that's not why it's stuck between my ears. This verse is why:

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true,
The box would empty, except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.

He imagines he has a box that contains wishes and dreams that have never come true.

So everything in that box has never happened, no matter how much he wishes or dreams it has.

And the only thing in that box is the memory of "you" answering all his dreams and wishes. Which has never happened, no matter how much he wishes or dreams it has.

Say what you mean, Jim.
