A 99 Word Story ~ #Prompt Luminaria

This is my first trial and entry for @Apostrophe's Lightning Round Write-Up or any other challenge for that matter; read newest member on board and I am overjoyed to be able to finally participate.

Using Merriam Webster's Word of the Day

It had been a while since he was last home. Long enough for him to first send word before showing up to know if indeed he was still welcome. He brought with him a loads of regrets.

What if she asked why he never wrote? How would he explain that the more time passed, the more it was harder for him to come back or write? Should he add that he hated himself for it?

When she opened the door, she was holding a lit luminaria that made her glow like an angel and he fell on his knees.

First attempt EVER in micro fiction or something like this. Words were overflowing in my mind as usual and editing it back to this was tricky enough. Share your thoughts. I will truly appreciate it!
