Gender bias pitfalls in recommendation letter writing

in writing •  7 years ago  (edited)

Introduction:
As someone in the academia and scientific research center, I have come across situations where some of my former students requested for a reference/recommendation letter from me.
Obviously, a lot of steemians must have written a reference or recommendation letter for a former student, former employee, or whosoever might be in need of such.

Aim: To remind writers, employers, professors, investigators or anyone in capacity to write a recommendation letter for their subordinates, on the common pitfalls to avoid.

I came across the picture below that gives a guide to writing without exhibiting gender sentiments. I made a bullet summary as well.

  • Accomplishments with evidence should be giving priority when writing a reference letter for someone.

  • Dont shortchanged women, write assertive statements to boost their prospects.

  • Recommendations/reference are always for formal sectors, titles and the use of surname should be used.

  • Emotional casual words should be left out.

  • Don’t give comments that second guess the proficiency of the person in need of the letter.

Brief example of some reference letters that I received before.

Have you written a reference letter before or have you asked someone to write a reference letter for you?

Thanks for the tips.

I copy and paste. So far so good :)

Lol. maybe you will one day copy and paste, cheetah will catch you. lol.

Cheetah has power only here. Where I copy and paste there's no cheetah there. Lol

Nice nuggets, I have actually learnt something, like write accomplishments not efforts hmmmmm.

Yeah. That is the way to go. It more concrete.

Thank for your sollutions and recomendasion on improving the writing. I will try to improve my writing with good references. Thank a lot for you. Good luck together and forever @turpsy

Nice pieces

I've never seen this before, but it's a great thing you've shared with us.

Thank you @stellabelle for visiting my post. I am happy you learned from it. Its a common occurrence for we that are Academics. I attached two reference letters that I have got when applying for job and the two avoided those pitfalls. I checked your blogs too. You have been amazing. I cant stop learning from your blogs.

It's not easy to write a letter of recommendation. If you don't have special skills, you can't do without a recommendation letter service. In my opinion such letters should be written by professionals.
