Update: I added the nsfw tag because one image might be objectionable to some.

It has occurred to me, and I have noted in a comment on a post by @taskmaster4450 and perhaps elsewhere that I am better at commenting than I am at writing.

For me, commenting is my primary interaction with Steemit right now. I actually believe I'm a better commentor than I am a writer.

This is fine with me because it is the way I can contribute most for now. And who knows, commenting might lead to a post idea.

Since commenting is writing, just in reply, this doesn't really make much sense. Nevertheless, it is true.

Reasons For Not Writing

I think the number one reason I don't write is that I'm insecure about my writing. I worry about the quality. I worry about low word count. I worry that what I have to say has already been said better by many others. It is for this reason that I think making comments is so much easier for me. Someone else has already pulled the trigger. They dealt with the worry. Once their post is written then my reply is just us talking.

Another reason is that sometimes I'm just not happy with the subject matter. Take this post for example, I'm writing about writing. That just feels stupid. I don't want to write about writing, though I know if I write, I almost certainly will do so occasionally. All writers do. Along similar lines I don't want to write about Steem all the time. I love Steem. It is an amazing tool for creating abundance and furthering my goals of a stateless society. But it is actually those dreams of abundance that I want to focus on. I just have to find a way to do that and almost certainly posting about Steem will be a part of that.

My life is full of distractions. Sometimes between work and my family life I can barely read, let alone write. This is something that I'm working on rectifying but I have a long way to go. Let's just say it's hard out there for a pimp.

Lastly but still a very big reason is that sometimes, I don't like being honest about myself.
Above I wrote:

Writing things like this about myself makes me feel like a pansy.

The problem is, that I know that a key element to good writing is something called verisimilitude. People have a hard time reading things that make assertions but don't have the appearance of truth. Its kind of a catch 22. I don't wanna sound like a pansy, so I hold back. But if I feel like I'm holding back, I know the writing is lacking, so I won't publish.
This makes me sound silly.
Moving on...

What to do?

For starters, comment.
What I see myself doing is primarily commenting and then elaborating here.
Perhaps this will be a sort of comment collection blog. It sounds silly but I think it solves my biggest problem. Once the trigger is pulled I'm not writing. I'm just chatting at that point.
I could probably also do some Link Love posts, compiling links to posts that I found interesting. This helps the authors by maybe giving them more traffic and it helps me cuz well, Its A Fricken Post!
And of course I could do earnings reports, but that sounds tedious.

A more long term idea centers around a group I intend on starting but that idea will require more Steem Power, Steem, SBD, and followers on my part. Fear not, I'll get back to it ASAP.

Conclusion and Feedback

I've listed some of my reasons for not writing though I'm sure there are more. What do you think? Am I a pansy?

Sort Order:

Do you have many interests you could write about?
If you have interests you think others might be interested in, if you were stuck for things to write about, I'd write something about your interests.
Then when ideas come to you from outside of those interests, you already have made posts about those interests so you might hope you have already gained some audience through those posts that might read your posts about other topics.
You might also just find you love writing about your interests and that becomes your main thing which would be cool too.

Another thing you could try is joining a writer's group. You could still afterwards post what you write on Steemit but a writer's group is a good way to get yourself writing something, anything and it also makes you somewhat accountable which makes it more likely to happen. I used to go to a writer's group and we would all suggest a word and then whoever would run the next meeting would choose from those suggestions and we would all write something with that word in it. Sometimes we used whole phrases instead of words and that worked too. It was good and it was an interesting thing to be involved in as the ages involved ranged from people in their 20's through to people in their 70's but we all had a shared common interest - writing. It's certainly a way to get moving.

The other thing is to just write. It's easier said than done but just write about something. I don't have the writer's block type of issues too much because I am someone who thinks a lot which also helps in not running out of things to write about, however I have the issue of being unsure of hte quality of my creations and perhaps being too concerned about that. It's better than thinking your work is amazing and therefore not improving but it's not good to be too down on yourself. This applies to what you wrote as well. If you think your work is amazing, you'll fail because you won't strive to improve it but if you keep being insecure about your writing, you are holding yourself back rather than creating the cool things you will create. Both are harmful mindsets. Keep in mind your writing likely is quite good, but it can use improvement, and that is okay and doesn't mean the world shouldn't see it.

I don't run out of posts to put on Steemit specifically because I also make videos and animations and have various projects going on, but I can see in a more blog style people could run out of things to talk about. I think this is where going to a more stream of consciousness talking about your thoughts on certain issues type of blog might come in. Nothing particularly interesting is happening right now but here are my views on this thing and what do you think, basically.

The best thing you can do if you are unsure about what to write is probably to just write something and suck it and see - it could fall very flat or it could be a post that majorly takes off and is beneficial for you or it might be somewhere in between. Your writing may improve with spending time writing but it won't improve with not writing.

Thanks for this thoughtful and excellent comment!
I have thought about the writers group thing. I've also used writers prompts. The prompts do help to prime the pump.

Your writing may improve with spending time writing but it won't improve with not writing.

This is the truth and I know it.
Gotta suck it up and write more.

NP. Yeah prompts are good. I've found it interesting before seeing what people have created on reddit with the subreddit r/writingprompts. Some of what they create over there is quite good.

I look forward to seeing what you do end up writing.

Just slowly and slowly, you will find out which topics or subjects you are fond of! Just relax and enjoy steeming! have a good day!👍

Yeah, I'm sort of erratic and eclectic. I like too may things, but not always for long. I'm sort of a serial enthusiast.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
