Is Baseball Boring?

in writing •  7 years ago  (edited)

It’s called America’s Pastime, but with some games running as long as 4 hours and a possible final score of 1 to 0, is this game boring. Plenty of enthusiasts will tell you that it is a complicated chess match; a battle between pitchers and batters with the awesome plays of true professionals to break up the monotony, but some disagree. The game moves one pitch at a time, where most hits result in what is literally called a, “routine play.” But there’s history and records and bombing homers.

So, who is right? Is baseball an epic theater of hits and diving catches, or is it a snooze-fest that needs MORE steroids and less routine plays?

A little bit of both. It’s got long sessions of boredom, but also many great moments of action.

The games are long. That’s one minus. But in the summer it’s great to sit in the ballpark and have a beer and a hot dog with some friends.

Everything has pros and cons.

We can live without steroids. It's only boring if you're not a fan, and then there is noting that can be done to keep it from being boring for you. Love the game. True-to-the-blue Mariner's Fan.

Is not an easy game.
The only sport where the defending team has the ball.....It's just different. .
Tigers !!

Amen to all you said. It's like an old love affair that never goes away.

Jajaja
What a description

Baseball is not passionate only live. Its history, statistics, curious facts and anecdotes are an endless source of conversations between friends and family, nothing better than listening to an expert to nurture your knowledge. El béisbol no apasiona solo en vivo. Su historia, estadísticas, datos curiosos y anécdotas son fuente inagotable de conversaciones entre amigos y familiares, nada mejor que escuchar a un experto para nutrir tus conocimientos.

Hi I live in France and do not have a lot of opportunity to watch Baseball. All I can say, is the one season I had the possibility to watch when ESPN America was available on my TV, I watched every single game which were broadcasted. I never felt boredom and was always happy to endeavour the subtleties of this sport. Some might say it is like a check game, to me it is sometimes also like golf. The only difference, is the attendance who can make some noise. Pitchers and Batters have a high capacity of concentration and sometimes I see that some hits are voluntarily missed for strategic reason. The interesting aspect is the defense beginnig with the pitcher who needs to eliminate the only guy facing them at the moment, whene non of the opponents team have a batter on the bases.
It is also thrilling since you never know how some hits will be catched or whether a double-play will happen. The best moments if you are in favor of the attacking team is will there be a grand-slam, or on the other hand will the pitcher have a no-hitter.
My point is that strategy and everything that can happen during the game including milestones for the books make Baseball pretty interesting and relevant to watch, also the extra-innings are great. However, most game have an overall duration of 2 and a half hours not 4 except real big game with extra-innings as there alway must be a winner.

I also love all the other US Sports. Just living on the wrong side of the ocean ;-)

Oh my gosh so boring! I'm American and let me tell you, I'd much rather watch hockey or some UFC. Baseball is about as boring as golf, in my opinion. And no, I don't think steroids are good for anyone for any reason. Just sayin' LOL
:)

Wow good game

Baseball is so far apart from other sports. Some quarters even think that the rules of the game need to be modified to make it more interesting and I think the sports really need a new direction to compete

Game is all about interest. I tell you to those whom are enthusiast of the sport, it can never be boring.

I dont really understand this game.

I played baseball of my life all of the way up to the collegiate level. Baseball can be very boring just as it can be very exciting. I never looked at the sport as a "complicated chess match."

I always looked at it as a "game of moments." The games are rather long so a exciting/good game consists of a string or several patches of exciting/good moments.

"Routine plays" usually refer to the defense successfully making a play with a low level of difficulty.

Gotta toss my hat into the "I dig it/complicated chess match" ring.
Often a fun conversation there.
Good power and energy to you.

Between all the newsfeeds and FOMO, I think it's easy to forget that slowing down every now and then isn't a problem to be fixed. The pace of baseball is part of what separates the sport from other big sports.
Steroids would spice up the game for a spell. But, after all competitive teams are juicing to match each other, that new standard of play from steroid-baseball would become just as routinized as baseball is today. Every moment of a sport can't be exciting. There must be some contrast for something to be exciting. There needs to be slower/routine moments for the extraordinary to stand out

excellent post friend. Greetings from Venezuela. here my vote

Amusement is about intrigue. I instruct you to those whom are lover of the game, it can never be exhausting.

It goes from boring to real exciting in the blink of an eye! I have always found it fascinating to watch, but I also grew up playing the game as well. There is definitely strategy involved and you have to pay attention to see it!

I grew playing Rounders and I have to say out of all the sports I played, sports like Baseball are some of the only that have such a sudden switch from boring to interesting! I've enjoyed watching moves like Moneyball and I'm impressed that methods such as Sabermetrics were developed in baseball first. For the people who find baseball boring, what would you do if you had to watch cricket?!

good !!

It's better than cricket that's for sure.

Boring. Haven't watched a World Series game in over a decade. Sorry, Geddy Lee. Geddy Lee, bass guitar player and lead singer of Rush admitted to a total fascination with the game. He has a basement museum full of memorabilia he has collected over the years. In a documentary about the band, he shared how he got started: he was bored while on tour and got hooked on baseball.

Just one of those weird trivia tidbits. :)

Baseball is defined by the anticipation of each pitch. Waiting for each pitch of a dominant performance from the mound is thrilling. Waiting to see if your team can put together a 2 out rally while down by 4 in the 9th is nerve racking. Waiting to see if the prospect called up after spending three seasons in the minors to see if he has what it takes to be your everyday left fielder, then watching him blossom as a defensive guru is amazing. All that waiting can be redefined as I said earlier as anticipation. That's the key is to live in the anticipation zone while watching baseball. I absolutely love this game and will forever be a fan.

It might be boring to most people. Problem is, you have to pay close attention. When you are really following a game of baseball closely, every pitch is important. The tiniest little things can become tremendously meaningful.

Baseball is really a spirital game. A ritual of sorts.

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

It is decidedly so
