WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS: Killer Robots

in writing •  7 years ago  (edited)

As Randy screams in South Park S09E08, “We didn’t listen!”

In that particular episode, he’s lamenting the damages of global warming, and the lack of interest or care his fellow man had taken to try and stop it. But there is an evermore present danger that the scientists of the world seem to be running at. It’s odd that some very relevant wisdom, in the discussion of science would come from The Bible, but here we are. 1 Corinthians says: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

And what CAN we do, that we shouldn’t? Killer robots.

Yeah, that sounds sensationalized, but as a person that has been following closely the news reports of the world’s scientists racing each other to our eventual destruction, there have been some glaring examples recently, that just aren’t getting enough attention.

To take a step back, for a second, the two main concerns with regards to artificial beings are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and indestructible robots of death. Much can be said about the advances and ethical concerns of AI and the singularity, but more terrifying is the recent news out of Boston Dynamics. It seems like every couple of months they release a video of their newest all purpose robot. First they climbed stairs, then we saw them stand up even when kicked and pushed (a wonderful propaganda video for the eventual angry robot consciousness) but then, this:

https://youtu.be/aFuA50H9uek

After months of testing the stability of a robot dog, Boston Dynamics has now made one that they say, “…needs to be good at dealing with ‘disturbances’… and that may sometimes include pesky humans.”

The irony of the article is that when describing the main features of the “dog” like picking things up, and helping around the house, it notes that these are things that “many battlefield robots aren’t designed to do.”

Kinda sounds like they’re bring the battlefield right to our front door.

What is the run time on the battery, I just need to know how long I need to be able to run to wear it out. Got to get in shape.

Or we need to start developing anti-robot weaponry... Who's got funds?

I want one. Who wants one ?

Does it shot?

If robots get there citizenship like in Dubai they most probably will shoot.

This is sooo cool!!

This is cool, a way to keep your surroundings away from unwanted guest. Hope the device can properly identify faces and store up the data for recognition?

Hummmm Im sure that you can upload some program for that.

Forget South Park! I saw an episode of Black Mirror about this very thing!!

I love Black Mirror, I haven't watched that episode though, will look into it.

Maybe because people above us don't want us to talk about it or they have just kept it low profile and they will bring it in the public once they are done with their stuff.

I think this is what Elon Musk is concerned about. I'm all for technology and advancement for artificial intelligence though.

They are definitely coming. Take a look up Boston Dynamics and the robots they are making. It is so scary. They look so real and some are much stronger than us. this is definitely heading toward the Terminator.

A strong robot is one thing. A terminator is another. They can make them sturdy, smart or deadly, but they still need a battery haha. Their main limitation is electrical power. I'd be surprised if they could run for more than four hours straight.

Cool video post @writesbackwards, but how sure are you this is not CGI?

I've seen quite a lot of BostonDynamic's robot videos and in the last few years they were getting more and more creepy. The scariest (for me at least) so far is definitely Handle

This thing is pretty fast and seems pretty stable too.
The ethical questions artificial intelligence raises are pretty complicated, but the military use of these technologies should be illegal for sure!

As Stephen Hawking once said

Success in creating effective AI, could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don't know.
~ Stephen Hawking

This thing could tackle a person with ease lol.

This is my first time to see this kind of robot

If climate change doesn't get us, the robots just might finish the job.

They should cover it in fur and have these big werewolf looking things roaming around!

To me, personally, this is an incredible scientific achievement; a scary one, sure, but an incredible one. Perhaps the thing that scares me the most is the question of who gets to have this technology. Shortly before dying, Stephen Hawking talked about technology becoming a catalyst for inequality. I truly hope this inequality does not eventually degenerate into some new form of slavery, not by the hands of machines, but the masters of machines (and very smart ones).

This is really cool but kind of scary in a way because of the movies that I have seen where robots take over the world lol. But the technological advancements we are seeing now are just incredible. I am so looking forward to seeing what else people come up with during my lifetime! Thanks for sharing

The entire world of robotics should exist to serve mankind and not to subjugate it by force as is often the case. The use of robots and how they are utilized will depend heavily on the leadership of a State or country and their political agenda. Great post.

When it is time to talk about......it will be be talk about.
Everything and stages have it's own time to manifest

Whoa this reminds me of an episode of Black Mirror. Have you seen the one where the people are running away from the robot dog things?! They looked an awful lot like the picture to this post. That show gives us some scary glimpses into the future methinks

I just posted the same thing my friend. Well the powers that be always give us warnings in one form or another on whats going to occur, maybe you're right.

We shall see!

this great I would like to have a house, excellent publication

I saw these mentioned on the Joe Rogan podcast these guys at Boston dynamics are insane and are really creating some cutting edge technology and I was already unsettled by it then in this seasons black mirror one of the episodes featured one of these robots killing humans and patrolling borders it was very unerving

I've definitely been keeping up with these robots as well as our first-ever "robotic citizen" Sophia.

wow interestint thanks.follow you.

Its downright terrifying. If you have access to netflix watch this episode and it all becomes even more scary........ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalhead_(Black_Mirror)

Skynet. I hope no one else said this yet lol

Will our wars be pre-won in the future? Will starcraft nerds face off for the fate of the planet? Man, robots are awesome.

that can happen, build your armies up now while you still can

Great Post. I like it :)

haha like a doggy

i think that is cool ^^

Quite and interesting content. Nice robot you have here.

That's fucken scary i am not looking forward to the future of robots...

or can we use robots like we use other tools?

In the movie, the shotgun decides all the problems - from aliens to robots.
If you not shure - add flamethrower from Elon Musk ;-)

Fascinating and horrifying at the same time. We are observing evolution (of course public materials only ;) of these tetra-pods with my husband from longer time and our feelings are more than mixed about that. Even once had a dream about being chased by them. In real it would be a freakingl nightmare. But of course, as any invention, it can be use for good or for bad. Everything is on the human kind...

Its because the mainstream media have been paid not to talk about it.

Can we have good robot body guards to protect us from bad robots?

Because people got their head buried in their NSAphones looking at pictures of food porn, dick-picks, and whatever other nonsensical activity to stay dumbed-down and distracted! That was easy. Any other questions?

Wow very interesting your post @writesbackwards.....It's very help us...Thanks for sharing....

Wow awesome your [email protected] for sharing steemit

We are so selfish and ignorant that we see and believe whatever we want. Are robots dangerous? Fck yeah..should I worry? Fck it, ppl are wortied about what shoes to wear.. or what phone to buy.. not killer robots or climate change ..they just ignore..bcs its easy to ignore...to think...well thats difficult..many would not mind if a robot would control them :)

I can't admire it.
For me, this is his is creepy shit... :o

lately I have been thinking a lot about this, and sometimes I imagine how the future would be. Through time history have thought us that when humans invent something, we dont think or take into account negative outcome, just look how our planet is suffering more now from all the industrial revolution.

My biggest concern is when after more blockchain adoption happens, blockchains will be connected along with AI. How can we really assure humans wont lose control over AI?
