In light of recent events, I'd just like to say, for the record, that I don't care whether people address me using my academic degrees or not. All that matters is that you use my proper, preferred title of "Sublime Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe." In less formal contexts, "Your Majesty" will do!

On a slightly more serious note, if this issue is the biggest norm-related controversy of the soon-to-be Biden administration, that will be a VAST improvement over Trump! Also, titles aside, I think it's a good thing Jill Biden intends to continue her independent career as a community college professor.

Presidential spouses and adult children should be seen as independent adults with their own lives, not as a kind of royal family who must be constantly on display and in the news. This is already more or less the norm for male spouses of female national leaders (think Angela Merkel's husband, Theresa May's husband, Margaret Thatcher's husband and so on). The same should apply to female spouses of male ones.
