The debate around who is to blame for the covid-19 crisis - if anyone - has been plagued by polarization and misinformation. Many reject the Chinese Communist party's assessment of a natural origin, though few give America any credit for helping the situation and getting to the truth.
In 2017 and 2018, US diplomats sounded the alarm about a laboratory in Wuhan that was conducting experimental research on bat coronaviruses without following safety procedures. The Chinese scientists in Wuhan even told the American diplomats that they did not have the resources to operate their lab safely and asked for help.
President Donald Trump's administration ignored the warnings, and soon enough, America's trade war with China had pushed tensions to the point of China revoking America's access to the Wuhan lab.
What resulted was an inability for anyone - from America or the World Health Organization - to access the Wuhan lab and gain critical information regarding the origin of the virus.
