The movie Das Boot from 1981 is one of the most popular German films of all time. The role was so successful that 35 years later a completely new series about the German submarine U96 is being run. The producer has had a replica of the U96 built in Malta. The submarine entered the U-boat bunker La Rochelle in a spectacular way last week.
The adventures of the submarine in the Second World War made director Wolfgang Petersen, leading figures such as Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer and Klaus Wennemann, as well as composer Klaus Doldinger of the title music world-famous.
The producer has had a replica of the U96 built in Malta. It measures 67 by 6.5 meters and weighs 240 tonnes. Amasus Shipping in Delfzijl shipped the 240-tonne replica of the submarine for a new TV series over WWII to France. The history of the submarine is based on true events written down by Lothar-Günther Buchheim, one of the crew members. The U96 had and now again has the French place La Rochelle as home port. The producer has announced broadcast of the series before the end of 2018.
