It’s not really all that surprising that Brock Lesnar, while still Universal champion in WWE, would show up at a UFC event to challenge its heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier. What is surprising is that WWE would cover it on its website, and then downright push the upcoming fight.
That’s what has happened, though.
Indeed, WWE hyped his being at UFC 226 and now have reported on the fact that UFC President Dana White announced his intention of making a fight between the two champions. But what does this mean for his future in WWE?
That isn’t made clear:
Speculation has run rampant over Lesnar’s future for much of this year, starting with Lesnar posing for photos next to White on the night of WWE Elimination Chamber 2018. Lesnar last competed in UFC in July 2016.
Weeks ago, Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman revealed that The Beast’s next Universal Title defense was facing contractual issues due to a lack of confidence in WWE to find a suitable challenger. Lesnar last appeared on WWE TV at the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27, where he retained the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns.
Stay tuned to WWE.com for any updates on Lesnar’s WWE contract.
That’s some storyline mixed with reality to create as much interest as possible. Recent rumors suggest he’s in for SummerSlam, and it’s unclear how soon UFC will be booking a fight against Cormeir — early belief is it can’t happen until at least November, and maybe even until 2019. There’s time to sort all this out.
