Xiaomi decided to throw a direct challenge to Samsung by assigning its flagship event in China on the same day with Unpacked (there will be three flagships of the Galaxy S10 series). However, before the official announcement, the Chinese company revealed almost everything that might be interesting to the public regarding Mi 9, including the special version of Explorer Edition, of course, except for price and time-to-market data.
While the Galaxy S10 is preparing for significant design changes, the Xiaomi Mi 9 represents an evolution and improvement of the predecessor in the Mi 8. Of course, there are updated specifications like the Snapdragon 855 chip and improved technologies, including a more sensitive screen fingerprint scanner. Minor changes relate to almost all aspects of the device - apparently, this is what Xiaomi’s strategy is for this device.

From a design point of view, Xiaomi got rid of a relatively wide screen cutout in favor of a small teardrop-shaped under one front-facing camera. This is achieved due to the fact that instead of a separate ambient light sensor, a screen is used, and instead of the usual proximity sensor, an ultrasonic one is used. This, as Xiaomi brags, gives the Mi 9 a display that occupies 90.7% of the front surface. However, there is still a non-ideal frame at the bottom, although its thickness is reduced by 40% compared to Mi 8 - to 3.6 mm.
It is also worth noting that the AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080p +, covered with a protective glass Gorilla Glass 6, is characterized by a NTSC color space of 103.8%, a maximum brightness of 600 cd / m2, a contrast ratio of 60,000: 1. All this is complemented by brightness optimization technology for comfortable reading Reading mode 2.0 with advanced gram and color temperature optimization. For more legible information output in bright sunlight, Sunlight mode 2.0 technology is used with adaptive optimization of contrast, colors and brightness.
Xiaomi uses a two-layer nano-coating in combination with holographic laser engraving technology at the nano level to achieve an unusual effect of finishing the back panel. There will be three primary colors - black, purple and blue (the last two - with iridescent pearls).

The company will also release a limited edition special bright covers in red and green colors with the mention of Roy - this is the pseudonym of brand ambassador and vocalist of the Chinese teenage group TFBOYS Wang Yuan. He is involved in promoting the smartphone in the Chinese market.

Thanks to the use of a 7 nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, the device scores 387,851 points in Antutu 7.2.4. This single-chip system includes a Kryo 485 8-core processor (bundle 1 + 3 + 4), which promise a 45 percent increase in CPU tasks compared to Snapdragon 845. Also, the chip includes Adreno 640 graphics, a three-fold more powerful neural processor and a number of other innovations .

But the most significant changes affected, of course, the rear camera. It has become a triple, and all three lenses have the same dark coating for a uniform appearance and are protected by durable sapphire glass with an area of 243 mm2. At the same time, the main camera with f / 1.75 aperture received a large 1/2-inch sensor (against 1 / 2.55 "in Mi 8) Sony IMX586 with a resolution of 48 megapixels. There is a 12-megapixel mode, when every 4 pixels are combined into one to improve quality and reduce noise in low light.

The second camera is a telephoto lens for double optical zoom. It features a more modest 12-megapixel sensor and an f / 2.2 aperture. The third camera includes a 16-megapixel sensor and an ultra-wide lens (viewing angle - 117 degrees) with an aperture of f / 2.2. At the same time on all cameras promised accurate (even in the dark) autofocus, combining the advantages of PDAF and CDAF, which due to the new VCM motor (Closed-loop Voice Coil Motor) should also be very fast. Xiaomi Mi 9 supports macroshooting from a distance of 4 cm versus 10 cm in most smartphones. Unfortunately, nothing is said about the quality of the video, but the capabilities of the Snapdragon 855 suggest 4K / 60p HDR10 format support (possibly in H.265). There is also no data on optical stabilization.

Separately mentioned is the good sound quality due to “the best in the industry linear dynamics” with high-quality deep bass using special materials and an intelligent DSM-amplifier Smart PA. You can also note the presence of an infrared emitter to control equipment, an SN100T chip for accelerated NFC operation, as well as a high-precision dual-band GPS receiver with an independent L5 antenna.

Xiaomi is proud of its new Game Turbo mode. It not only intelligently allocates resources during the execution of the game in favor of complex scenes, but also offers a set of tools that allows you to see the processor load, GPU and frame rate. In addition, there are settings for the sensitivity of the touch screen for more convenient control in games.

Finally, in addition to this, the executive director of Xiaomi Lei Jun (Lei Jun) spoke about the existence of Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition. This model will include 12 GB of RAM and, for the first time in similar editions, another camera. We are talking about a light-sensitive lens with an aperture of f / 1.47 for a 48-megapixel sensor. Also, the back side has a rather attractive pseudo-transparent design, as it was already practiced in the special edition of Mi 8.
