I took these photos in Tibet in 1989 while on a semester abroad. The yak was a popular beast of burden in the region at that time and probably still is. The yak has been used in this regard for a very long time and they are important to the culture in other ways too. Here you see a number of them carrying things. Notice also the small pockets of snow on the ground.
