1998 - Random Movies include The Truman Show

in year1998 •  3 years ago

Danger, Will Robinson, you're lost in space again. I'll make a man out of you, Mulan, just cut your hair. Robin Williams goes to Heaven & Hell in What Dreams May Come. We get to see Antz, A Bug's Life, and Toy Soldier. Doctor DoLittle does little outside of talking to the animals. Chucky wants to play in Child's Play and get married to a bride. I get to see Moses in The Prince of Egypt. This was before The Prince of Persia.

I've included some of my favorite movies from 1998. The Waterboy becomes the Incredible Hulk, they insult him and that turns him on, turns him into a killer football tackler. Picard is back in another Star Trek movie with ugly aliens who look like George Soros. Babe the talking pig is back, this time in the city. The only movie more interesting that year than Armageddon was The Truman Show.

23

1998-01-14 - 23 premiered in Germany

I've not seen this movie but did see many years later a movie starring Jim Carrey which had the same name, Twenty-Three. 23, original German title: 23 – Nichts ist so wie es scheint ("Nothing is what it seems")[1] is a 1998 German drama thriller film about a young hacker Karl Koch, who died on 23 May 1989, a presumed suicide. It was directed by Hans-Christian Schmid, who also participated in screenwriting. The title derives from the protagonist's obsession with the number 23, a phenomenon often described as apophenia. Although the film was well received by critics and audiences, its accuracy has been vocally disputed by some witnesses to the real-life events on which it was based. Schmid subsequently co-authored a book that tells the story of the making of 23 and also details the differences between the movie and the actual main events.

Who Am I?

1998-01-17 - Who Am I? premiered in theaters

I've never heard of this movie before but it reminds me of Nowhere Man which I watched on television in the 1990s and Bourne Identity movies which both center around a man who does not know who he is. I love these kinds of stories.

The Man in the Iron Mask

1998-03-20 - The Man in the Iron Mask premiered in theaters

I saw it many years later and the trailers are intriguing. I knew Leonardo DiCaprio who I saw in Titanic in 1997 or early in 1998. The Jesuit Order is in the movie. That is crazy. I think Leo plays 2 people in this movie and it is crazy stuff. I forget if this movie had a twist ending or not.

Lost in Space

1998-04-03 - Lost in Space premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters, I knew it was based on the 1965-1968 CBS television show. I love the famous quote, "Danger, Will Robinson." So, this movie was interesting and fun.

3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain

1998-04-10 - 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but have seen the previous 3 Ninja films. This one features Hulk Hogan. I think I sort of remember seeing the trailers for this.

Paulie

1998-04-17 - Paulie premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but saw the trailers of a talking parrot. That's cute, funny, interesting.

Godzilla

1998-05-20 - Godzilla premiered in theaters

Not sure if I've seen it but I've seen the trailers and I'm familiar with the story. Oh, I also remember playing Nintendo's Mario which has Bowser who could be a cousin of Godzilla but a lot smaller like a Hobbit if dragons and dinosaurs could have smaller versions of themselves. Small people. Small dinosaurs. Oh wait, turtles. oh wait, lizards. Oh, I started playing Sim City around 1994 and it featured a Godzilla disaster option in it.

The Truman Show

1998-06-05 - The Truman Show premiered in theaters

This movie stays with me and I think about it sometimes. Oh, what if people are watching me? I love this Jim Carrey movie? If I don't see you soon, good morning, good afternoon, good evening. Oh wait, what was the quote? I butchered it. I love that Jim got out of the Matrix in the end. This was the most interesting movie I saw in 1998 and it still is a good parable.

Disney's Mulan

1998-06-19 - Disney's Mulan premiered in theaters

If I didn't see it in theaters, I eventually did see elsewhere later on, I saw the trailers, I like Asia and specifically China and Chinese are interesting. My mind goes back to the 1993 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 - Turtles in Time where the turtles go back to the 1600s A.D. to Japan. There were the Samurai ninjas. So, this movie is fun and Mulan is like a Ninja Pocahontas if Pocahontas was Chinese. Well, Pocahontas is almost Chinese as Native Americans are from Asia originally.

The X-Files

1998-06-19 - The X-Files premiered in theaters

In the 1990s, I would sometimes watch The X-Files on television. So, the trailers for their first film in 1998 was exciting. I think I did go on to see this movie in the 2010s around the time I was watching all of the episodes and all of their movies in order. I'm a big fan of the franchise and the characters. I'm really into the lore, the stories, the theories, and everything. The truth is out there. The series is captivating. This first movie may not be as good as the most recent seasons which came out in the 2010s. But at the time, it felt like a big deal for a TV show to have their own movie kind of thing.

Dr. Dolittle

1998-06-26 - Dr. Dolittle premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters, possibly my first Eddie Murphy movie, this was like imagine Babe the talking pig but with all the animals talking. It is a pretty funny and curious comedy. I was intrigued with what animals might say. I wanted to know.

Armageddon

1998-07-01 - Armageddon premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters. I saw Bruce Willis in 1997 in the Fifth Element which I also enjoyed. So, I was excited to see this film which reminded me of Apollo 13 from 1995. The main song for this movie is unforgettable, don't want to close my eyes, don't want to fall asleep cuz I miss you babe. I was so sad when Bruce Willis died, spoiler alert. Yeah, I saw the trailers for this movie which got me to go see it.

Small Soldiers

1998-07-10 - Small Soldiers premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters, it was a more hard-core version of Toy Story in some ways.

Lethal Weapon 4

1998-07-10 - Lethal Weapon 4 premiered in theaters

I've yet to seen the Lethal Weapon films but I do remember the trailers and it got my attention. Some of these films were probably rated R meaning I was probably too young to see it in theaters as I was only 13 in 1998. What stuck in my mind back then was the part in the trailer where Mel Gibson tells Danny Gover to take off his clothes in order to distract cops or other people. So, my mind was like oh no does he do it kind of thing. But it was raining outside and he might get cold. The movies looks like it has a lot of action kind of like Bad Boys starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and perhaps the two franchises are similar. Oh, Joe Pesci and Jet Li are in this 4th film. Oh, Chris Rock too.

There's Something About Mary

1998-07-15 - There's Something About Mary premiered in theaters

I've seen this movie later on TV. I do remember the trailers. Oh, she is fat but she looks skinny. But what manners is inner beauty.

The Mask of Zorro

1998-07-17 - The Mask of Zorro premiered in theaters

I think I saw it many years later. I saw the trailers and thought it was exciting. He was a new kind of super hero to me.

Saving Private Ryan

1998-07-24 - Saving Private Ryan premiered in theaters

I saw the trailers, it stars Tom Hanks and it was probably the first time I've ever seen Matt Damon who you may know from Bourne Identity. In Saving Private Ryan, who is played by Matt Damon, Tom Hanks leads a group in a pursuit to save him. But I've only seen a few scenes of this movie.

Ever After: A Cinderella Story

1998-07-31 - Ever After: A Cinderella Story premiered in theaters

I didn't see it in theaters but I saw the trailers many times in 1998 and especially that summer. Some of the trailers featured a song that would get stuck in my head, "Tell me a love story" was included in the lyrics and title of the song or close to it. Something like that. I think Cinderella, played by Drew Barrymore, had wings at one point based on the trailers. Well, or something else. Maybe I was seeing things. I was sort of in love with her and I didn't even know it was a movie about Cinderella or maybe I kind of knew. The trailers might have said it was trying to tell the real story or a different version of Cinderella or I forget. But whether I knew or forgot that it was about Cinderella, I do know I didn't think about that most of the time. Instead, I was captivated by her, the interesting scenes in the trailers, the music, the song, it had me hooked like drugs. But I guess not hooked enough since I never got around to seeing it.

1998-08-14 - Air Bud: Golden Receiver premiered. I've not seen it. This was the sequel to the first one from 1997 where the dog plays basketball. I saw the trailers for that first movie.

Blade

1998-08-21 - Blade premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but the trailers looked cool. A black Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A Night at the Roxbury

1998-10-02 - Friday - A Night at the Roxbury premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but did see the SNL sketches on television which the movie is based on meaning I've basically seen the movie in a way as the movie is just an expanded version of the segments featuring those characters played by Will Ferrell and that other guy. What sticks in my mind is that famous song in the movie and in the sketches, What Is Love. The lyrics are catchy, baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more.

Antz

1998-10-02 - Friday - Antz premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters possibly that weekend or later on in October of 1998 and I also saw What Dreams May Come that same month on a Sunday, possibly on the 4th. Also, I saw A Bug's Life which came out around Thanksgiving on the 20th of November, that is the next month. So, A Bug's Life is also about bugs similar to Antz. The movie with the more interesting story might have been Antz if I had to pick between those two movies. I probably should watch them back to back in order to make a better comparison.

What Dreams May Come

1998-10-02 - Friday - What Dreams May Come premiered in theaters

1998-10-04 - Sunday - 06:00 PM apx - I saw it at a Hillsboro theater. After seeing it, I hoped back on bus 57 and went to our home church, Community Baptist in Cornelius, to attend the evening service which we sometimes would. perhaps we had a potluck that night after the service. I must have told at least one man there about the movie and he said it was a bad idea to watch it. Well, he might have said it before I saw it. I might have saw it with my brother and maybe others. Most likely just my brother. I don't think my younger sister saw it. But that would be it or I saw it by myself. I know I saw it on a Sunday. I think it was right after it premiered. May have been the next Sunday in October of 1998. But most likely it was that first weekend that it premiered.

What Dreams May Come is an interesting movie about what might happen when you die. It stars Robin Williams who dies and goes to Heaven and then to Hell. I made a home video with family and friends about a similar situation back in May of 1996. So, I found this movie to be intellectually stimulation but emotionally depressing.

Bride of Chucky

1998-10-16 - Bride of Chucky premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but I remember the trailers very well. I saw the previous films too. It was shocking, scary, and awesome to see a female version of Chucky. It was very cool and creepy too to see Chucky get married or whatever that happens in the movie. Yeah, I've seen bits and pieces of this film over the years and some of the others that came after as well. I am a bit of a fan of the lore of Chucky and I find it captivating in some ways.

The Waterboy

1998-11-06 - The Waterboy premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters. I don't know if I saw it with my brother but he saw it too and would quote it sometimes. Gatorade sucks, water is better. I think that was a quote. The other movie with Adam Sandler which we also loved was Happy Gilmore in 1996.

Meet Joe Black

1998-11-13 - Meet Joe Black premiered in theaters

I remember watching the trailers. This might have been the first time I've ever seen Brad Pitt. I've not seen this movie but the trailers were appealing.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

1998-11-13 - I Still Know What You Did Last Summer premiered in theaters

I've not seen it but the trailers were in my face like a Scream, pun intended.

I'll Be Home for Christmas - I saw the trailers to this, it stars the boy from Home Improvement.

A Bug's Life

1998-11-20 - A Bug's Life premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters. There was also another animated film called Antz. It was like Honey I Shrunk The Kids without the kids and just the ants or bugs. It was a curious thing. Oh, like The Magic School Bus without the bus or the kids.

Enemy of the State

1998-11-20 - Enemy of the State premiered in theaters

I first saw this probably in or around 2011 after borrowing it from the Cornelius Library which is a few hours from my house. I was living on my own in Portland, Oregon for 4 years. Moved back in with my dad in 2011 for 2 years. After that, I moved to Vietnam to teach English for the rest of my life which turned into 5 years. I was sort of feeling like an enemy of the state when I ran away from America to live in Vietnam. So, I saw this movie and it is really interesting. The one old white guy lived or worked in a Faraday Cage. Many bad people work in the government. Many of them work for other people in collusion and other things too. I may have saw some of the trailers for this movie in 1998 but it is really hard to remember. But I think I vaguely remember the trailers.

The Rugrats Movie

1998-11-20 - The Rugrats Movie premiered in theaters

I first started watching Rugrats in the 1990s at Tiffany Cumbo's house. The television show premiered in August of 1991. I'm not sure if I've seen this movie but I've watched many episodes over the years and I love the characters, the theme music, and I really love the idea they can talk and sneak out of the playpin. I did see the trailers for their movie in 1998 and I was interested in seeing it.

Babe: Pig in the City

1998-11-24 - Babe: Pig in the City premiered in theaters

I saw this sequel in theaters just like I saw the first film in theaters as well back in 1995. The first movie is better overall but the second film is funnier and sillier and has more action in some ways. First one has a story that was easier to follow. I remember the story of the first film. I don't remember anything about this second movie other than they are in the city. Well, I take that back. I guess they have to somehow save the farm or be stuck in the city forever kind of thing. So, it is possibly this second film was even more interesting. I would have to watch them again to reevaluate.

Jack Frost

1998-12-10 - Jack Frost premiered in theaters

I saw it on television later on, the trailers got my attention because it made me think of Frosty the Snowman.

Star Trek: Insurrection

1998-12-11 - Star Trek: Insurrection premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters. It is possibly my second least favorite Next Generation films after Generations because it deals with these ugly aliens seeking immortality. This movie is pretty depressing and yet a little interesting here and there. But overall an odd movie. My favorite Picard movie was probably the previous one, First Contact, as they deal with The Borg.

The Prince of Egypt

1998-12-18 - The Prince of Egypt premiered in theaters

I saw it in theaters, it is animated retelling of the story of Moses and how God used him to usher the people of Israel out of Egypt thousands of years ago. This may have been the first Bible-story I've seen in the big screen. We also got it on VHS in 1999 at the earliest.

You've Got Mail

1998-12-18 - You've Got Mail premiered in theaters

I saw it later on and it is a fun love story. I think I saw it around 2002. The title is a reference to AOL email which would say when you went to the inbox whenever you had new unread mail, "You got mail." It is a love story between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Les Misérables

1998-12-24 - Les Misérables premiered in theaters

I either saw this movie or a different movie adaptation of the 1862 novel of the same name during high school for an English class one year I think, possibly tenth grade, 2001-2002, Mrs. Bramwell. This 1998 movie has Liam Neeson who you may know from Taken. I don't have a lot of memories from this story.

Patch Adams

1998-12-25 - Patch Adams premiered in theaters

I saw it after it came out on VHS in the 1990s at the earliest or possibly in the early 2000s during high school. Movie based on a true story of a doctor who acted like a clown to help patients. Wait, he is a patient too. Inspirational story. Little sad at times.

Mighty Joe Young

1998-12-25 - Mighty Joe Young premiered in theaters

I don't have any memory of ever seeing this movie but I saw the trailers and it looks interesting, a movie about a gorilla who is eventually returned to Uganda, think Free Willy but with a gorilla instead of a whale and Bill Paxton instead of a boy.
