"Spiderman" is coming up, again. Mamoudou Gassama captivated the world with his heroic acts, climbing a facade of Paris to rescue a small boy hanging.
Many months later, the video is just as impressive. A small child suspended dangerously from a balcony on the fourth floor. A neighbor, with outstretched arms, struggling to convince the child to get safe. And the frantic crowd below. Suddenly, a figure appears, skillful and agile. Go up to the building, raising a railing at the same time, before tearing the 4-year-old boy from an unthinkable fate.
There were many people watching but it was Mamoudou Gassama, then a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mali who was going to watch the Champions League final on television when he heard the commotion. The rest is history.
Two days later, Gassama was in the Elysee Palace, where French President Emmanuel Macron promised the young hero a fast track to French citizenship in gratitude for his bravery.
The Firemen of Paris also realized their heroic acts. "There are many common characteristics between his gesture, Mamoudou, and the values that the Paris Fire Department defends, including courage, audacity and also humility," his commander, Jean-Claude Gallet, told Gassama the day after his meeting with Macron.
