Thunderf00t, aka Phil Mason, is a YouTuber who is known for his videos on topics such as Feminism, Creationism, Pseudoscience and Religion, as well as his scientific videos covering everything from physics to biochemistry. He's a YouTube veteran at this point, and I've long been a fan of his videos. Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily agree with all his points of view, but the man knows how to present an argument. He currently works in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
Many may know Thunderf00t from his series of videos where he criticized feminist critic and video blogger Anita Sarkeesian's "Tropes vs Women in Video Games" series. Another one of his notorious collection of videos is his "Why Do People Laugh At Creationists?" series, which primarily focused on Kent Hovind's arguments in public seminars. His videos expose the irrational behaviours and attitudes of certain groups of people, highlighting the errors in their logic and reasoning.
I find that too many people in this world get stuck into certain ways of thinking, and after a while only seek out information that reinforces these world views. So, because of this I try to expose myself to as many different viewpoints as possible, and then maybe somewhere in between these polarised opinions we may find a glimmer of truth. Cognitive bias is a real problem in this modern age of misinformation and post-truths. Cognitive bias, put simply, is a mistake in one's reasoning, evaluating, remembering, or other cognitive process. This can be clinging onto your beliefs even in the face of contrary information, and it can even alter our memories of past events to fit this narrative. This, I believe, is at the core of our current outrage culture, where the masses are knee-jerk reacting to events and new information as if it's a personal attack on them, but I digress.
Back to Thunderf00t now, and there's one thing I'd like to point out about Phil, and that is that he can come across at times as arrogant/big-headed, but he's an undeniably smart guy and that often comes with the territory. He presents his arguments very well, and I particularly enjoy his series debunking pseudoscience, such as scam Kickstarter campaigns, so-called "breatharians" and even ol' Musky's Hyperloop. He's accumulated over three quarters of a million subscribers and growing, despite numerous controversies and attacks from outside groups.
If you've got the time and you're looking for some YouTube videos to watch, give his channel a go. I've included the usual links at the bottom of the post. Do you have any favourite YouTubers?
