A content creator made $400,000 last year through YouTube, affiliate marketing, and consulting. Here's how he got his start.
• Roberto Blake is a YouTuber, coach, and creative entrepreneur who earned more than $400,000 in 2021.
• He started as a freelancer and steadily scaled up before leaving his graphic-design job in 2013.

Roberto Blake, 37, left his day job as a graphic designer for a marketing agency in 2013 after having a realization: that he could make more money on his own than in his current role.

"You have to look at this, and you have to go, 'Wait a minute. How many people do I need as clients to make the same money that I'm making?'" he told Insider. From there, he simply broke down the math, comparing his $2,000-a-month take-home pay with the possibilities of going freelance.

"It doesn't take 40 hours a week to get $500 or $1,000 worth of work done. So if I'm sitting at my job working on hundreds of clients each month, I could work for five of these people and be making more money," he said.
Today, Blake has a successful coaching and consulting business and a YouTube channel with 547,000 subscribers. He also makes money through sponsorships, ads, and affiliate marketing. In 2020, he made $300,000 in total revenue, and that grew to $400,000 in 2021, according to documents verified by Insider.

Here's how he got his start and set up multiple income streams.
Starting as a freelancer
Blake didn't put in his two weeks' notice at his graphic-design job right away, he said. Instead, he started doing some freelance work on the side.

"I didn't do things that were directly competitive with the company," he said, adding that he did a combination of marketing, social-media management, web design, graphic design, and video production for freelance clients.
Blake studied marketing and graphic design at a community college, but he dropped out before earning his degree because he knew he could teach himself. All of his other skills are self-taught, he said.

To advertise his side gig and show off the kind of work he could do, he built a website portfolio and blog — he's redesigned his website from the original style since then — on WordPress and focused on search-engine optimization, using key phrases in his content that people were searching on Google like, "How to build a website" or, "Best video editors." It paid off, and as clients found him through Google and worked with him, he said word of mouth further carried his business forward.

Eventually, clients started hiring him for consultations, too. "Some of these jobs were two or three hours long, and that can be really lucrative," he said.

Blake also has a YouTube channel that he started in 2009 where he shares tips and advice he picked up while freelancing and consulting. As he posted more often, his subscriber and client base grew. Blake said high-quality thumbnails and SEO were the two biggest factors in his growth on YouTube.

Investing back into his business
Blake said he's always reinvested about 50% of his revenue back into his business by upgrading his equipment to create higher-quality content. Once he could afford to do so, he also began making hires, his first being his sister. Today she handles administrative tasks like coordinating meetings with clients and brand partners.
He also has four full-time employees who assist with editing B-roll for his videos and creating graphics for his website and YouTube channel. He hires contractors for additional work, which he said frees up his time for new projects and helps him avoid burnout.

Diving into affiliate marketing
Blake said affiliate marketing is one of his top income streams.
"I fell into affiliate marketing from the Amazon affiliate program, but then I realized a lot of subscriptions and software I was using had programs, too," he said.

He said he started by recommending the high-end camera equipment and computer gear he used for his videos on his YouTube channel. Then he tried other avenues. "I went into some other platforms like Kajabi, which is around $1,800 a month in passive income, and TubeBuddy, which is around $5,000 a month in passive income," he said. He found these earnings were much more consistent, he added.

Kajabi is a platform that lets users build, market, and sell online courses, membership sites, and digital products. On Kajabi, Blake sells a starter kit he made for YouTube thumbnails that includes Adobe Photoshop templates, and he promotes the platform to his followers. His videos and one-on-one coaching focus on helping people make money, and one way he suggests doing so is by creating online courses and selling products. TubeBuddy is a browser extension that adds a layer of tools directly on top of YouTube's website, and he promotes that to people with YouTube channels to use as a way to increase their visibility.

Blake said he takes a look at his monthly earnings regularly to see what's working and what's not. It helps him focus his attention on the right income opportunities. For example, with TubeBuddy, he said he noticed that he was getting a lot of sign-ups as more people hoping to grow on YouTube found his channel, so he started including mentions of his TubeBuddy affiliate link more in his videos.

He added that it isn't necessary to be a creative like him to make this type of money. He said he believes that every small-business owner could be making additional income on social media or through affiliate programs. In addition to YouTube, Blake uses Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as marketing tools. "It's wildly practical, and you can't say it's not when literally children and teenagers are doing it and doing it successfully while out-earning their parents," he said.

Being an adventurous guy, my best guess is that I was living in the University District of Seattle, Washington back then, but I could be mistaken, as I've lived everywhere over the years. There are five places I call home, and ironically, none of them are where I was born and grew up, Mansfield, Ohio. I never felt at home there, and so it is no wonder that it still doesn't feel like home. I joined the Navy and left there when I was 20. After the Navy, each time I returned home, I couldn't wait to leave again.

I call New York City my home, and San Diego, Laguna Hills, the Philippines, and Seattle my other four homes. Over the years, I've floated between all of these places, living in each one off and on.

At the time I started my YouTube channel, I was 44-years-old and focused on becoming a writer. I wasn't any good at writing all the way up to the age of 42. That was when I realized how much I wanted to write, so I took it on and taught myself using books and YouTube videos. It took me about 10 years to excel. One might think that's a ridiculous amount of time to devote to learning something, but it wasn't for me, as I'd come to the realization by then that I could do anything if I was willing to spend the time necessary to learn it. So when I committed to learning how to write, I already knew how badly I sucked at it, and I expected it to take a long time to excel at it.

It's interesting to me how I knew I wanted to be a writer. Those who don't know what they want to be in life, take note. Since I was very young, I always had a special fondness for my writer friends. Eventually, at 42, I realized that my little crush on them had nothing to do with them, but was a reflection of my own desire to be a writer. It dawned on me that this seemingly impossible dream had been with me since childhood. Since I knew it might take a long time for me to excel at writing, my first question was whether I was willing to work hard at it and for as long as it would take. I was. So I dedicated myself to learning it, no matter how long it took. Now, more than ever, I am convinced that I can learn anything I want to learn. All I have to do is want to learn it enough, and then, do it.

Becoming a writer was an important evolution in my life. It changed my life for the better in a multitude of ways.
Thus, I evolved from being an artist, into being a writer, and then, in more recent years, into being a filmmaker. Did you know that becoming a filmmaker was actually a fluke? It's true. I never aspired to be a filmmaker, ever.

Several years ago, after relocating back to New York City for the third time, I was hired by multi-award winning documentary filmmaker Jason DaSilva. My position for Jason was all-encompassing, including assistant, writer, cinematographer, and associate producer. Jason taught me everything he could, and I received professional film credits for working with him. But, after working for him, I still wasn't thinking about becoming a filmmaker. When it came to my YouTube channel, I was focused on creating videos, not films.

The switch to filmmaking happened in May 2021, when GV Peli, my assistant in the Philippines, and I went out one day to create a vlog for my channel. I feel that I don't need to explain too much here, as you can see this in our film, "Snapshots of Sogod." This documentary captures the actual transition from, both GV and I, starting out vlogging and evolving into documentary filmmaking. I love this movie for that very reason. It's raw, unpolished, and a little amatuerish. But in my heart, it's what great documentary filmmaking should be- a true-to-life story and portrayal of what happened. While GV and I were vlogging on that first day, I remember telling him, as I realized it, "GV, we're not vlogging here. This is filmmaking. I know filmmaking. That's what I was doing in New York."

Since then, making documentary films has become my primary focus, but they take a lot of time to create, so I mix in other creative projects and post other kinds of videos on my YouTube channel. Creating films for YouTube is a whole different ballgame than creating them for the film industry. The whole process- marketing, financing, and timeline- is very different.

What I've been doing to improve my channel is working on improving myself as an on screen talent, as well as my equipment and filmmaking skills. Since May 2021, I've been learning everything in order to be able to do everything. While Jason DaSilva taught me a great deal about filmmaking, there was a lot he couldn't teach me, as some of the more technical tasks like sound and video editing were farmed out to professionals. There's a great deal that goes into making a film, like video and sound editing, which I've had to learn on my own.

My latest documentary, "Why I'm Leaving The Philippines! My Forever Home No More," has been getting really good views. I posted it 3 days ago, and it's already gotten nearly 600 views, 65 likes, and 40 comments. Those numbers, I'm happy to report, are increasing nicely.

So the question is- do I finally have a viral video on my hands? That's a good question. I don't really know. Maybe. That's all I can say.

I am creating this channel organically, not with any fancy marketing tricks or payments under the table. If someone wants to interview me on their channel or on TV, that's great. That would definitely help my YouTube channel grow, as well as bring the interviewer, hopefully, more viewers.

I received an interview request from Vagabond Awake's channel in 2021. It was an easy interview, uploaded to YouTube April 19, 2021, and quickly became a viral video. It now has over 111,000 views, is the 9th most popular video on Vagabond Awake's channel, and is still climbing the charts. I expect it to eventually triple in views and reach the #5 spot or better. I upload both regular videos and documentaries on my YouTube channel, according to what I'm personally inspired to create. As a multi-talented creative, I couldn't possibly satisfy my overflowing creative spirit by doing just one thing. That's why you see such a variety of videos and documentaries on my channel.

I also struggle with following a schedule. That's because my creativity flows naturally and consistently and I find it better to catch what pops into my creative mind quickly, rather than wait and schedule it as something to do later.
Being myself and letting everyone see me for who I am is important to me, and hopefully my subscribers appreciate this. My video genres include:

I have been keeping a steady eye on my latest documentary, "Why I'm Leaving the Philippines-My Forever Home No More," as I'm anxious to see if it's going to be the one, that finally, after nearly 15 years of YouTubing, takes my channel from hobby to occupation.

Monotization is, of course, a huge milestone for any channel. For me, it will allow me to focus on creating more content for my channel instead of having to side hustle for a living elsewhere.
