Is Youtube Digging its own Grave?

in youtube •  7 years ago  (edited)

For the past 4 years I have been putting all my time and efforts into YouTube, while making a living off of it. I am the producer of world5list and Angelo is the producer for @theywillkillyou. We swapped action on our channels a long time ago and have been working together closely ever since. In addition, Angelo introduced me to Steemit a few days ago which, even though it’s still very early, has been an awesome ride so far!

Overall, YouTube has been a fun adventure. Coming from a poker background, it was great to look at the graphs every time and see consistent growth. I still praise myself lucky for being able to work this kind of job, but the days that I really enjoyed doing what I’m doing are long gone and it’s all “thanks to” Youtube’s inconsistent and unfair policies.

I wrote a post earlier today about the constant insults that creators and their followers have to put up with on the platform (https://steemit.com/youtube/@world5list/my-first-day-on-steemit-vs-4-poisonous-years-on-youtube). In all those years, those insults have gotten worse and worse without YouTube taking any serious action. I doubt that they ever will and based on that, none of what you are about to read should come as a surprise. I truly believe that YouTube is digging its own grave!

Instead of focusing on cleaning up their website, YouTube is coming down harder and harder on content creators without ANY regards to the so called “partnershitp” that every channel is involved in with them. In reality, it’s more like a sweatshop than a partnership.

Many big channels had and have been suffering for a long time and some were forced to close shop a long time ago, because of YouTube’s sad efforts to influence its audience, which @alexpmorris provided us with a good example of in:
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@alexpmorris/youtuber-s-guide-to-re-monetizing-with-steemit-and-thank-you-to-my-first-253-subs

Regardless of whether or not you share the same ideological beliefs as Alexander and the people he was running this channel with, it is insane that they basically had their right to free speech taken away by YouTube.

On March 25th of this year, things took a turn for the worst. A bunch of major brands pulled millions of dollars in advertising from YouTube amid rows over extremist content on the site. YouTube was showing ads of high and low profile companies in videos that were aimed at recruiting jihadists. Something that in my wild imagination would have boiled down to : “Come to Walmart, buy yourself a nice gun and join ISIS”, “Join Verizon and use our plan to set of your car bomb!”. It’s such an epic fail on their end...

YouTube has been in existence for 12 years now. You would think that by now, they would have a handle on these things.

Naturally, their “partners” took the hit for this unfortunate “mishap”. Earnings dropped faster than when I pull my pants down after I have been holding it for too long and countless of perfectly fine videos got demonetized. Instead of getting their shit together, they are completely overreacting, making all their so called “partners” suffer in the process.

A few days ago, I posted a video about '7 Of the most heart warming good deeds' and guess what….? Yep you guessed it, it’s demonetized! Cause of course, I’m sure companies like Pepsi, AT&T and L'Oreal would not want to be associated with that kind of REVOLTING content!

youtube-policy.PNG

You can’t count on anything anymore when it comes to YouTube. Angelo and I invested a lot of money into flying out to Colombia and bringing a camera crew to interview one of Pablo Escobar’s former assassins, which we thought would make for great original content ( you can read more about that and see a part of the interview here https://steemit.com/youtube/@world5list/interviewing-a-hitman-damnable-or-not.) After what happened on March 25th and because of the way YouTube reacted to it, that's money down the drain! We are lucky enough to have been successful for a few years so we can afford to take that hit, but many others can’t.

popeye-interview.png

In the past, you could at least predict which topics would have a bigger chance of getting demonetized but now, all the guidelines are out the window and it has turned into a crap shoot because YouTube opted to tighten the reins in their sweatshop, instead of getting their own shit together up in the ivory tower.

More and more creators are abandoning YouTube and most of them are not even doing it to prove a point! They are doing it because they are left with no other choice. But with every disadvantage comes an advantage, so let’s hope that a lot of these former YouTubers find their way to Steemit and will help grow this awesome community!

The downfall of youtube. Beautiful.

:)

Short answer: Yes.

Very well said I have the same opinion as you. I myself have a channel on YouTube but never really put much effort on it cos the earnings were too low. Just recently I had started focusing on it again and that advertiser debacle happened. I am glad that I found about Steemit. It looks like YouTube is on a downward spiral with so many content creators looking for alternate options.

I too have a small channel that I'm gradually building up. Always looking for alternatives though!

They are simply getting what they have coming...

Good read. On the one hand sad to hear Youtube has turned into this. I only see Youtube from the consumer point of view and not the creator. I never knew things were this bad. On the other hand, nothing lasts forever. Sites like Steemit are the future. I predict that more and more professionals like yourself will come over and make this the next-big-thing. Again Kudos on the article. Cant wait for the next post.

Thanks a lot, always great to hear when someone was entertained! IMO. YouTube is very undeserving of their own creators right now.

Hey @world5list! Good to see that more content creators are joining Steemit. You, together with @theywillkillyou, are one my favourite channels, and I hope more of my favourites come as well. I would really like to see the content worked so hard for get you fairly compensated.

I have heard a lot of YouTubers complain about these issues, but I still don't fully understand what YouTube is doing terribly. Can you explain, in the simplest way you can, what it is?

Thanks and all the best to you :D

What I BELIEVE is going on (but I'm far from sure), is that YouTube has built in so many checks and balances on the back end to prevent people from posting offensive or controversial content that a lot of videos are falsely getting flagged and once something gets flagged they obv. don't have the manpower to manually correct all of their own mistakes.

Thanks for your support btw!

Ah I see. Looks like an indiscriminate censorship system. That's unfortunate :(

Well, welcome to Steem. I've followed you here as well and I look forward to your new content! :D

Having just gotten started, every follow is HUGE, so thanks a lot!

You're welcome! :D

This post received a 36% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @thecryptofiend! For more information, click here!

I don't understand everything about steemit yet and that's an understatement. But I think I have to thank you right?! @thecryptofiend

Its only a matter of time until mainstream will fins out about the insane advantages of our blockchain tech and how we can harness the attention economy while providing fair rewards to our users without middlemen and best of all without it being generated from spamming ads on you.

Yeah we are forced to spam our videos with ads these days because they payouts are so terrible, a topic I didn't even touch in this post...

Well put brotha! You have my vote :)

Are there any alternatives to YouTube that provide the same kind of ad revenue sharing?

@ninkhisibir just made me aware of this:

You should keep an eye on https://lbry.io
Looks like it will be a very promising alternative to youtube, decentralized, built on blockchain. (:

Thanks, just put my name down for early access!

VidMe is a new one but it's kind of a joke currently. I want it to succeed but it's kind of glitchy. I can't upload or comment from mobile. The search function is lacking and 99% of the content is gaming or animation which I have nothing against but it's not really my cup of tea. Youtube isn't terrible like so many people say, keep making your content for Youtube and you'll be happy you did. That said this, Steemit that is, is an awesome new platform where I'm going to be putting a lot of my time and energy.

when I look at the quality of your content and the engagment you bring here. You seem to be in good hands with steemit and propaply can fly to the mars for some videos within a year.

Haha, thanks a lot. (again) :)

very well said Rene, and thanks for the shoutout, as well as for sharing my YouTube nightmare debacle story as well! lol

As I wrote on your previous post, if we can all help even a few other YouTubers find a "light at the end of the tunnel" and make their way over to STEEMIT, it feels "a bit" like offering people a lifeboat off a sinking ship! 😱

Also gonna try sharing your post around for some additional exposure, along with a resteem too! 😲

Great man, I appreciate it a LOT! Super nice. Yeah it's hard to find and reach the people who are struggling. I think one of the reasons for that is that as awesome as this platform is, it's really difficult to explain how it works and to convince people that it does work.

and the people he was running this channel

I suppose I should also introduce you to @michellectv, my YouTube "partner in crime"! Dunno where she's disappeared to, but maybe she'll finally show up after this shoutout! lol

Also, I still keep adding more content and videos to my YouTube post that can hopefully make it just that much easier for newer users to navigate their way through the STEEMIT ecosystem. Every little bit helps!

I'll keep reading them to try and keep my head around all this! :)

In hindsight, @alexpmorris and I had clues it was the beginning of the end of the YT Partnership program after we attended the first Youtube Live event in Nov. 2008...

I've kicked myself many times thinking I got out too early in late 2011. Now, I'm grateful we hadn't taken on more expenses to ramp up production...

Btw, from 2009-11 my videos were food and beverage related...

Also, glad you discovered STEEMIT, and pleasure to meet you Rene and Angelo! :)

Thank you. Those YouTube events are pretty frickin worthless hey....?

They certainly would be now!

Welcome to Steemit :). I am glad we have YouTubers that are so serious about their craft they fly to foreign countries! You are already crushing it, so keep at it and Steem on. Before you know it you will have chronic Steemface.

YouTube also leaves us small creators in the dark, giving us all these restrictions.

Hey man, it's really sad how YouTube is treating the very people that drove the development of the platform. The good thing is that there are alternatives like Steemit and vid.me.
Thanks for sharing this!

They don't want us anymore. They have Youtube TV and the networks...

Very well written, i upvoted! Please check out my last post, i'm really in desperate need of help, need upvotes resteems donations... PLEASE

Great to see Youtube Influencers here on STEEMIT. I followed you ... Lets go make it happen!!

Much appreciated. The immense support I have been getting on here in my first 2 days is incredibly motivating!

Check out the Library Credits cryptocoin and protocol. I have nothing to do with it personally, though I trade it on bittrex sometimes late at night. It's a new kind of media distribution cryptocurrency block chain thingie that could kill sites like Youtube and Vimeo and their ilk, with a new kind of web protocol for media sort of like steemit for video and music and docs and stuff. Worth a look if you are tired of youtube. Eventually, anyway.

Thanks for the info. Would definitely want to get in on this as early as possible!

It's a crypto amongst many, but I like the smell of the stuff they are steppin' in for sure!!! Your mileage may vary. But keep an eye on it!

I agree, we've lost so many good content producers. the big companies are attacking free speech as best they can. we need a decentralized platform similar to Youtube.

Couldn't agree more

What if I would click 'Upvote' on your videos on Steem for every time I click 'Skip this ad' on YouTube? :)

We might test it out down the line. I am sure that putting up our videos here would be more profitable but I am worried about the effect it would have on the community. It would be bad if Steem turned into another YouTube.

I am a regular consumer on YouTube and I really sad to see it die. I hope more YouTuber will land here.

It's not sad necessarily. The content won't go away, it will just become available on other platforms.

You should keep an eye on https://lbry.io
Looks like it will be a very promising alternative to youtube, decentralized, built on blockchain. (:

@theywillkillyou We must look into this!

Thanks a lot! Will definitely check this out!!

Thanks for expressing what a lot of people are experiencing on YouTube. I produce really high quality, indie films and web series and getting a foothold is very difficult if you don't produce A LOT, and then to top it all off, now there's the risk of your content just not being advertiser friendly by standards that appear completely arbitrary. You're right, predictability appears to have gone off the deep end.

I'm really looking forward to SteemQ and hope that the other decentralized models like Alexandria and LBRY are able to create new, more sustainable models for independent creators.

I think the sky is the limit once word gets out for many of those new platforms.

I hope so! I want to keep making films and it'd be great to connect directly to an audience without a middleman or a third party squelching new ideas and dissenting views.

Yeah the aspect of taking out the middleman is simply FANTASTIC!

I actually just wrote a piece on a few of the decentralized models out there. https://steemit.com/steemit/@distantsignal/decentralized-models-for-artists-entertainment-and-making-money

12.45 AM in Amsterdam and that doesn't look like something you quickly read :)... Will have an extensive look tomorrow though. Could be really valuable for me!

No worries! Have fun out there! Let's keep in touch. I'm very curious how Steem will play out when it comes to video, especially if SteemQ every gets released.

Youtube died in my eyes the minute they started playing ads in the middle of videos...

I play those too on most videos. They are not leaving us with much of an option with how much the revenue has dropped :(

Oh so it's the youtuber's choice? I didn't know that.
Still, it was YT that made it an option in the first place.
Do you know how awful it is when you put some sexy
music on to get things going and in the middle of the
act a commercial comes on?! Youtube is dead to me!

The Youtuber's "choice" yes, although it's not really a choice for most of us...

Same here...

It is. Watching many vloggers you can see their fustration. Many are looking for other options. Hopefully they migrate to steemit

I think for vloggers especially, that steemit would be really great for them!

Great for Vloggers, but bad for bloggers with social anxiety who wouldn't get in front of a camera for all the money in world.

Youtube is just trying to improve their user experience. It is also important to make sure that the users are also getting relevant results.

"Youtube is just trying to improve their user experience." They seem a lot more interested in controlling the user experience than they seem to be in improving it. In my personal opinion at least.

How does demonizing a video about 7 heartwarming good deeds, like they did on world5list, improve the user experience?

Your post is a good read. Nice to hear someone else's experience. I jumped on the Youtube Bandwagon late, and can relate to exactly what you've said. Think a lot of it has to do with advertiser pressure. I'll always be a Youtube viewer but no longer post. I am still learning on Steemit but find it a great platform.

Potentially Steem could be the new Youtube but without the ads. Would have to be a sub platform though I would imagine because you don't want intervene with all the great blogs too much.

Welcome to Steemit. The migration begins. : ) Upvoted and you have a new follower.

Thanks a lot!

Very interesting post. It's cool to get the perspective of someone who actually has experienced working with YouTube. I am a fan of a lot of content creators on there so I hope YouTube can get it together!

There are better options out there. People just need to be made aware. The content would improve too probably when it's not being censored. Of course some content needs to be censored but not to the degree YouTube is doing it!

Yeah YouTube needs some fierce competition to put the pressure on them and hopefully correct themselves.

I believe so, unless they change.

Hey.. Welcome to steemit and thanks for sharing your story.
I think I may have actually watched a couple of your videos on YouTube before.. Did you make one on boycotting the companies who are boycotting YouTube? If that was you, nice job! I appreciated that one and even shared it on my social media pages.
If it wasn't you, sorry for the weird confusion, lol.

It's great to see more bigger names coming over here to steemit.

YouTube has been in existence for 12 years now. You would think that by now, they would have a handle on these things.

Good point! I agree and personally think there is more going on. Perhaps even a conspiracy of sorts to try to control the flow of information more.

That sounds ridiculous you had a video demonetized that's about doing good heartwarming things.. I haven't watched the video yet, but I have my doubts there's anything in it worth that.. I could go into a whole rant about what I think but I know that's different than what is, and I don't wanna spam you with text.

I'm also a YouTube content creator, but a small one and somewhat new and it is discouraging to have all this happen right as I'm getting much more serious about making videos/movies. But steemit has been a great relief and balancing factor in regards to that, though I am still worried about the future on YouTube.. But, for me it's totally a passion thing and I'll still do it in my free time if I can't make enough money to do it full time, just wish I could do it full time. Maybe some day! Sorta still just getting started as I mentioned.

Some people claim YouTube will find a solution in time and be like it used to be, but.. I sorta have my doubts.. I think they messed things up really bad this time..

Anyways.. I followed you on here and subscribed to your channel on YouTube as well, I look forward to seeing more of your content in the future, good luck on here and in general!

Boy oh boy, this is a blog more so than a comment ;). That vid wasn't mine no . Everything you say hold true imo. And yeah I wonder too if YouTube will recover from this one!

My bad, I type over 100 words per minute so that's not very much to me, but I often forget that it can be a bit much, or even too much for others.
And ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification and the response.

It's hard to imagine YouTube going away sometimes just because of how prominent and dominant it is, however.. Who knows.. Monopolies rarely stay monopolies for too long. It'll be curious to see one way or the other!

Don't get me wrong, if everyone took as much time to respond to other people's post then that would be awesome for this platform as a whole!

It would just be good for people in general I think to do their best to interact with as many people as is reasonable.
It shows you aren't just trying to take and that you want to give as well. But I mean.. When you're interacting with so many people as I'm sure you know, it can be tough to give everyone the attention they deserve. But it's good to try! :)

100% agreed @world5list with you... i just quit on youtue last month after almost 4 years. they even delete one of our channel which was presenting our real production house working in Pakistan Locally. on that channel there are tele films in our local language 100% own by us. we are releasing these movies in DVD's in local market... my journey on youtube is over.
the worst thing is you can't even appeal against decisions made by a f*cking robot...

The service to their so called "partners" can be called abominable at best...

I think that YouTube will still be around for a very long time and the Ad Revenue situation will partially straighten itself out. It isn't a good feeling when you aren't compensated for what you believe to be a fair amount for your content. I have been on YouTube since 2008 and had my mental struggles with wanting to build a large following on there.

We are still able to make a living of of it. One thing to keep in mind tough is that half of the money that my videos make goes to YouTube. Starting to wonder if I really want to make THEM any money...

I can understand how people could become upset with the whole situation and I have had my struggles with it and also with the Steemit platform. It is is extremely hard to make a good living through content creation in general. My dream has always been to be a full time content creator and have a large following. I have never really been able to go for it because it would take years on YouTube and it still might not work out.
Hopefully Steemit can put me one step closer to that.

One tip from a beginner: write something, leave it alone for at least 12 hours and then come back to it before posting it. I have been making a lot of chances after letting my posts sit for a few hours before going on to post them.

Thanks for the great post. It seems like a number of prominent YouTubers have decided to make the switch. I hope Steemit is a great home for you!

So far it's been like a warm bath :)

if youtube is going to support Isis, supporters, then God will bring them down. @furion is a steemit like youtube like platform. They post video and pay people in steem and they are looking for beta testers. Interested?

Good post, but I don't think it's really fair all the flack Youtube is catching about Adpocalypse. I'm a Youtuber as well, my revenue went down 60% to 80% and it sucked, I'm not gonna lie.

That said Youtube has provided us a lot of opportunities, they allow us to upload as much video as we want for free, give us a great platform to work on and bring us tons of traffic.

Youtube is a business and has to make money and it does so through it's advertisers. If the adpocalypse hit you how do you think Youtube feels as your missing out on 40% of that revenue, they are missing out on 60%. Also they have fixed expenses for servers and stuff where as most Youtubers don't have a ton of out of pocket expenses for Youtubing.

Nobody should ever rely on Youtube money or Adsense money for 100% of their income because even during good times things fluctuate. Every Youtuber should have multiple revenue streams selling swag, selling a course, doing coaching, Patreon, Affiliate Programs, something. You can't rely on one stream.

I've also heard a lot of people saying they are censoring. They aren't censoring they let you post whatever you want, you just can't monetize everything, you can still post it though.

Totally right. I make the point that its the networks and network money that is killing YT among other things. I'm a creator with about 46,000 subs now moving to Steemit. You're not the only one and you're in good company.

Here was my post and video I made on my channel the other day in case you were wondering. KEEP STEEMING!
https://steemit.com/blockchain/@mericanhomestead/my-last-youtube-video-freeing-my-subscribers-you-don-t-have-to-be-held-hostage-anymore

good

Youtube is definitely digging it own grave. Content has been changing drastically in the last few years. Content creators have been complaining about the strict guidelines. I think for alternative sites like Steem, it can only be good thing.

Some appear to have already switched, hopefully there are more (quality ones) to come!
