No to be too much fo a n00b, but how does one exactly "sign-up" for Zappl? Thanks!

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

    You log in with your steemit username and you private posting key. You can find it on your wallet in the permissions tab. Click show private key. Hope that helps.
