- Assad's nickname
Bashar's grandfather was a resident of Qerdaha, Syria. His grandfather was named Ali bin Sulaiman. Sulaiman's family was not from a noble family. Solomon's family is known as the poorest family in the city of Qerdaha. Because of its poverty, the surrounding community dubbed their families with al-wahsy; 'Wild', because it has no clear residence.
The nickname of Assad, which means a brave lion, was obtained from society when Sulaiman became a war army against Turkish aggression to the city where they lived. From here, their family earned the nickname Assad until now.

Bashar Assad is educated physician at one of the oldest and prestigious universities in Syria, Damascus University. He was born on September 11, 1965 in the capital of Syria, Damascus.
This son of Hafiz Assad completed his studies at Damascus University in 1988. After graduating, Bashar devoted his knowledge to the Syrian community at Teshrin Hospital. In 1992, Bashar got a chance to go to the eye specialist department.

Asma Fawaz Akhras is the full name of Bashar Assad's wife. He was born in the city of Homs, Syria, on August 17, 1975. Asma's father was a longtime heart specialist in London.
The woman who is familiarly called Eima by her friends in London, is a student majoring in Computer Science at King's College London, which is a branch of London University. Incidentally, when Assad took a specialist in London, served in one hospital with Asma's father. On December 18, 2000, Eima was officially married to Assad.

Bashar Assad's father, Hafiz Assad, served as President of Syria for 29 years. Previously, Hafiz Assad had served as Syrian Defense Minister, and had also served as Prime Minister of Syria.
In 1971, Hafiz Assad was elected president of Syria through a referendum, replacing Salah Jadid, a member of the Baath party from the military.

Hafiz Assad served as Syria's president until his death in June 6, 2000. A month later, Bashar was elected president of Syria to replace his father.

Bashar Assad's family was originally from Shia Alawiyah or Nushairiyah. But politically, the Assad family is affiliated with the Syrian Socialist Party, the Baath Party.
Since Bashar Assad's father was president, Sunni-Shiite issues were redistributed by rebels who did not want the Shiite Alawis to have an important position in government.
According to data collected by Hinnebusch in his book Syria: Revolution from Above, as quoted from Dina Sulaeman, when first time Bashar Assad led Syria as president, not all circles of government came from Shia Alawi.
Military leaders 43% Suni and 37% Alawi, composition ministers 58% Suni and 20% Alawi, the rest filled by Druze, Ismaili, and Christian.
