First impressions on ZeroMe, Zeronet's Social Media

in zeronet •  8 years ago

Zeronet is the torrent based, decentralized, anonymous through TOR, internet service.

With the release of 0.4.0 they added a twitter clone, here are my first impressions.

ZeroMe offers the usual features

  • Posting
  • Comments
  • Upvotes
  • Follow
  • Profile edits
  • Avatar

The coolest feature is the 'subscribe to' which gives you a direct overview the second you launch ZeroNET

Profile Overview

Activity Feed and design

there's an "all" feed too

Pros:

  • ZeroNet/Me is super easy to setup.
  • Anonymous through TOR
  • Decentralized
  • simple design
  • as fast as Steem

Cons:

  • Mobile version should be very hard to get going
  • ZeroMe is dependend on Proxy Hubs, if they're down you can't reach it
  • "Everyone" Feed - Prepare to see illegal stuff

Conclusion: Unlike steemit.com (the website, not Steem the blockchain!), ZeroMe cannot be censored by one single entity. Really like the whole concept of ZeroNet, however, the social media is a niche product in a niche product. I don't see this exploding like steem anytime soon.

update I got from Nofish/ZeroMe regarding Hubs:

ZeroNet if full P2P, there is no need of servers for hubs. Everyone who is downloaded or interacted with a hub he/she is also hosting every profile on it. So the hub only go down if every people shut downs it's computer at same time. That's already means hundreds of computers (and the number increasing every day), so in the reality there is no real chance for any downtime.

Man after using steemit it's very hard to use another social platform that is not rewarding you ;)

Yeah, I'd rather spend my time curating than visiting other social sites.

It may be difficult to get people to use a platform that doesn't reward them, like steemit.com; they have certainly set a standard for others to follow!!

This looks promising! Do I understand this correct? Is Steemit.com just the first website running on the Steem blockchain? Can we expect more websites (or apps) running on the same blockchain (Steem) competing with each other in the near future?

But maybe we focus too much on the technical part of a platform/community. I like all these new solutions but a platform is "productive" if it manages to build ca community, a live one that could bring value/utility to the members. Consequently the platform will be developed.

Don't get me wrong: I like the setup of the new decentralized, anonymous and free platforms but humans are even more important.

That mobile version being hard to get going is certainly a stumbling block for them, interesting though!

yeah, I know there's a p2p messenger app that runs via torrent though. so it may be possible

Good summary, thanks for that.

I believe any new social network NEEDS a crypto token business model to incentivize people to participate in the network. New features, decentralization, and anything else won't move the needle IMO.

thank you for zeronet information
sometimes i open steemit and another site that blocked by my internet provider
zeronet really help me solve the problem
