Change is coming to Zimbabwe

The fiery quasi-dictator is under house arrest.

img source

Last night something happened in Zimbabwe which is a coup d'etat in all but name.

The military moved in with tanks and armored vehicles securing government buildings, the National Broadcaster and placing Robert Mugabe and his wife under house arrest.

But they have made it plain that they are not taking over the government and that this is not a coup.

Things have been steadily deteriorating in the country as the contest over who will succeed Mugabe has been hotting up.

The 93 years old president who has been ruling the country via rigged elections for 37 years, made a fatal miscalculation in the last couple of weeks . He fired his deputy president who was essentially competing against his attempts to hand over the presidency to his wife.

Grace Mugabe.

The deputy was the favorite candidate of the military and now they have acted.

Mugabe's long term has been significantly tarnished, by heading a repressive regime with much blood on its hands as it has done whatever it takes to cling to power.

Under his presidency he turned Zimbabwe from the "bread basket" of Africa into the "basket case" of Africa.

This same military that is now claiming to represent the interest of the people is the same army that was a very significant player in the decades of repression.

The highest denomination note ever printed in any currency in the world. Would have bought about 3 tomatoes back in the day

Rule by force is the disease, who and how are symptoms.

This is going to be the new president. The man who personally managed the military's genocide of more than 40,000 Ndebele in the early 1980's under instruction from Mugabe.

Sorry Zimbabwe. White minority rule may not have been right, but as the saying goes ' Be careful what you wish for'

Fuck... that's bad!

good @@@@

How long should Colonialism last is my question????

Mugabe was the worst thing that could have happened to Zimbabwe. Its about to get a whole lot worse. Once again the Western world will throw hundreds of millions of dollars at Zimbabwe to supposedly help and once again it will all be siphoned of by the political and military hierarchy, with the Zimbabwe people seeing nothing. The losers - Zimbabwean men, woman and children and western tax payers. The winners . the politicians and military commanders who will line their pockets and fill their overseas bank accounts along with the Western politicians who can all pat themselves on the back for their good deeds, without ever having left their 'ivory Towers' and seeing what is really going on in Africa.

I wish i had a magic wand, but all I can offer is a book on tactics.

What a turn of events that has been!
It's quite interesting, as people in the comments section have said, that no one stood up to him until today. It just goes to show how political interests shape and define the way a country is run.
What is very intriguing though is that the military has called this a peaceful intervention and they are promoting peace and stability in the region. An academic assumption, and affirmation, can be made for the militarisation of peace and how this could be applied in other areas of the world.
Democracy built on conflict is more often than not an unstable construct, which is why the current actions of the military seem to suggest a more positive outlook to the future of Zimbabwe, as they have not used force so far. Having real elections is only the first step towards democratisation of the country, but a big leap forwards compared to where it was so far.

What do other people think about this? I would love to go more in depth on my thoughts about this issue and its wider connotations.

I was surprised to see this but it is about time! Uncle BOB has been pillaging his country for far too long.

I also did a post on this and would appreciate support...

Interesting article , but Zimbabwe was never the bread basket of Africa . Rhodesia was, that may not be a popular or “politically correct” statement , the truth is rarely popular or politically correct. When Mugabe gained power thanks to the British the decline began which led to Mugabe sponsored purges and seizures of land and massacres by roving gangs of so called “war veterans”.

The fact here is that nemesis may have finally caught up with Mugabe, the whole world is concerned because he has turned zimbabwe into a monarchial system of government, and well i pray it does not end bloody

It is interesting to see these after effects of political structures that oppress the people that have been propped up by imperialistic powers and special interests. There are similar patterns here that mirror Venezuela, Iraq, Haiti and even more powerful countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In each of the aforementioned, the country in question is rich in valuable resources. Outside players get involved with the local government. The local government becomes less representative of the people after a time. Corruption and consolidation of political power occurs in the hands of an elite class. Oppression of the local people begins en mass. This is prevalent all over

Each country has divergent problems but share this common pattern. Is this apparent to anyone else?

Thank you for posting @gavvet.

Even though this was in the news....one still has to question its authenticity....thank you for confirming.

We do hope the best for Zimbabwe.

Wishing you all the best. Cheers.

well said!

Hey @gavvet Change is necessary and always have fruitful results let's see what will come in this change?
God bless Zimbabwe and it's citizens.

Revolution often lead to worse life. Hope Zimbabwe will be exception in this rule.

Hopes so it will happen.

That's very true. It's either worse or completely the same as it was.

Yes bro

Mugabe is the best looking 92 year old I think I have ever seen. Weird...

Alien!

Why not? Its the nation's money

Mugabe and many other dictators are the most selfish people on the planet. Making the country poorer then ever, just for their own wellbeing.

People need history lessons when it comes 2 the beautiful continent of Africa.....Jeff Sessions said recently that the war is now in Africa.....not a single country but a whole damn continent....We've been fed to believe that Africans rule Africa....Nope...In 1886 the European nations had sat down to divide Africa so European nations could have their hands in the vast wealth of land n resources it has 2 offer....Mugabe is revolutionary lil people know....If ur country was ruled by invaders or colonialism....would u fight back or die a coward.....??? Food for Thought

This pattern has been seen in other countries. A dictator is replaced by his fellow mates. The only change is in the administrative position, not in the moral values.

A good comedian once said, "Governments come and go, but hunger always stays." We can apply the same here: new staff, same rules.

The irony thing is what organizations like UN stands for? They act for the sake of innocent civilians or when they have common interests at play to secure the status quo.

It is the game of politics. There are no heads to cut off unless someone takes a different path and reject the conglomerates they're all in. And in place, the next powerfully-placed individual in the line, takes the crown.

This is just amazing. The fact that no one would stand up to this man even when he drove the nation into a hyperinflative state - so bad that they had to print 100 Trillion Dollar bills.

I find it amazing that you hear almost nothing about this from the American media. Americans can't hear anything outside the bubble...

It almost seems like that all of the U.S media are interconnected with each other and they broadcast what they want to for views

That is exactly what is happening. The media, just like the politicians, are controlled by the big money folks - Soros, Rothschild, etc.

Yes

Mugabe looking at the military men from his window :)

I hope this change is for the good of the people of Zimbabwe. They have been suffering for too long.

Congratulations

Extraordinary events, but I think that the army will remain on the side of the people and everything will become stable. Thank you @gavvet

There are no guarantees, they have butchered civilians in the past.

It's sad, the army must protect its people, and they kill. World turned upside down!

Owsam

Did you see how kids are calmly walking behind the tank? Upvote if you noticed that :)

yup, heading off to school

It's strange that it took 37 years to go against a false president. Or is this another attempt to overthrow him?

hoping for peace in the coming days

Peace will need to reign i will really hate a bloody coup

Hopefully a good turn for the country and it's economy and some stability. One only wishes something like this happened 10 years ago. anyway better late than never.

Also, the country needs a democratically elected government at the earliest rather than the military putting another authoritarian in place of Mugabe.

i dont think that is a good idea for a particular person to rule for 37 years and yet want the seat for his wife, this will lead to little or no progress in the country, having the same vision , not giving chance for others to participate is frustrating to the masses, i dont want to imagine what they are going through because i know is hell and only the brave will survive. it takes brevity to correct such effect and i think that is happening now , i just pray it works out for them, for slavery is disastrous but freedom is good health of mind ... @gavvet this is my few hrs of being on steemit and already you have garnished my fancy with good contents worthy of my follow... keep it up!

A very interesting news post, thank you very much.

May there be peace and prosperity for all the people of Zimbabwe and may there be the restoration of the decimated wild-life population that many people in Zimbabwe have tried so hard to save.

I can't but imagine what a 93year old has to offer the populace again. Are there no youths with leadership intellect? I wouldn't be surprised if the same change of power happens in NIGERIA

It remains to be seen how things will unfold.back here in Uganda,we have an old man (Mr Museveni) who thinks he is the only man with a vision for Uganda.I see him having the same fate or worse than Mugabe.should he play his cards the same way President Mugabe did.

pic+museveni.jpg
Mr Museveni President of Uganda in Power since 1986

I don't Understand why a person would be so selfish to think that "they" or "He" is the only one with a vision

Museveni was one of the "new generation of African Leaders" that Bill Clinton lauded in the 90s. These leaders were supposed to be the forebearers of democracy and economic growth that would spirits the "African Renaissance". Hell even Mugabe in the 60s & 70s was given a similar title.

Many of these leaders went on to become dictatorships after grabbing control. Does anyone have any detailed info about some of the money that went into the coffers of Museveni?

Officially,There is not much information detailing the worth of his assets, however if you came to
Uganda, many companies running in Uganda today are linked to him and his family.

Apparently,Mr Museveni can move with millions of money just to dish out to local population while having rallies.

This alone shows you the amount of money Mr Museveni has, which in my opinion is not his rightful money but rather money stolen from the Ugandan Tax payers

The ruling army has never been a good thing for a country, but the confiscation of power is worse so if Zimbabweans want peace an early election will be the solution to all this mess and it's time for the old man to take his retirement.

Election? Election he wins before voting even starts.

He forgot its a democratic government, he needs to go

hhhh amazing pic

I went bed last time with brief stories on my timeline, but didn't think anything of it. Couldn't believe what happend when I woke up.

I hope for the Zimbabwe that the best is coming

Only the hand of God can change the nation progress. Zimbabwe will definitely change, by the power of God. I see light coming to Zimbabwe, people will be amazed because the nation will prosper in everything. Behold God will make a way for Zimbabwe...

Really is time for Mugabe to leave. This should have happened decades ago. .. He has destroyed the farming community in Zimbabwe and in some ways given other African countries ideas to do the same. Thank goodness this has not happened in South Africa.

Brother @gavvet
It is politics in every sense when we see the lack of interdependence of peoples with rulers have negative consequences

His own ruling signalled the end to democracy in Zimbabwe, he could have have left power in a long time

Lets hope for a better future

@gavvet,
According to me it's the end of one era and begin of another. Don't know what will happen next! But hope new government will give more democracy than Mr. Mugabe's time!
After all I wish there will be no blood cost for this change! Thanks for sharing such unknown details to us!

Cheers~

I think this coup d'etat may not work. The man is not foolish, i just think the people will try, he need to surrender willingly for the cause of democracy

Robert mugabe has seen it all, however he could have step down when he should, ruling for 37 years does not signal true democracy, i think the people had been patient enough, he was a charismatic leader in his prime, but now, he has lost it, he should hand over power, i mean look at the way muhammur Gaddafi died it was the greed for power

As a Nigerian in Nigeria I had the news too and i was wondering, could this be true?

Just checked the BBC news and it's the top story there.

He has been ruling illegally for a long time now. Let us see how things play out.

Does not matter which way you view it..still will be a country with rich mineral deposits ruined by corruption at every level. Upvoted and followed

hope this will be a good step for zimbabwe peoples, best wishes

It is never simple, is it? Power and egos don't help the community, just the elite at the cost of most everyone else. How can the common good of all be in the forth thoughts of others/leaders?

It is about time things change in Zim. It is really sad how people are suffering after land was taken and given to poeple to farm on with absolutely no starting capital or knowledge on how to run and manage a farm.

Thousands suffering from hunger and it is about time for change.

Sad thing is South Africa is heading in exactly the same direction with all the corruption and the threats of land grab is terrible. Farmers are being murdered daily.

When there is no more food on the shelves, maybe then they will realise what they are doing.

Maybe South Africans must learn from the whole Zimbabwe debacle and maybe we can also get rid of state capture and corrupton...

So essentially there will be little if any change in Zimbabwe. The army was complicit in Mugabe's crimes.

Like in Egypt, watch out for the military all of a sudden becoming a "liberator".

It's funny but it seems that having these Lady Macbeth type of wives who control their husbands and motivate them to do all these evil and unacceptable things to cling to power happens a lot.

I think Mugabe wasn't half the tyrant that his wife was.

The same happened with Tzar Nicholas II of Russia. He left his wife in power, and his wife was having an affair with some weird Siberian long bearded hairy healing-monk-man...

I mean it's just Pure Macbeth. Shakespear nailed it with the way these guys get played out by their wives...

Glad Mugabe will be stepping down. It's been a long time coming!

Hope Zimbabwe can recover from the years of insanity...

I am hopeful but it s unlikely. History tells us that some new dictator will replace old dictator.

I am hopeful this change is for the good of the people of Zimbabwe. They have been suffering for far too long.

Waiting to see peaceful to Zimbabwe. All of wishes to there. These peoples lot of suffering bcoz those political problems. They haven`t necessary things like as a water, foods etc...Do the needful for provide their mind and stomachache. Lot of difficulties and trouble there. Why their politicians dont try to resolve their problem.
Resteemed @gavvet.

I really hope and pray that this is good news. These things don't always end well. I hope it has a peaceful outcome.

No idea celebrate this news or not. Still things unclear. Anyway got a nice quote of him~

That is why battery charging stations are a huge business there?

It is time for the people of Zimbabwe to feel some sort of "freedom", we hope the military direct the country to a free and fair elections, where Zimbabweans will be able to elect a leader of their choice.

This is great news, but it is shocking that it took all these years before anyone stood up against this dictatorship. Zimbabwe was once a thriving economy, now reduced to nothing.

I wonder if this instability next door had any influence on us loosing the bid to the 2023 rugby world cup. Or maybe it is our own corrupt president or the crime rate. It's still super disappointing that the votes went against the strong recommendation that we should hosting it.

I suppose this is just more encouragement to bring the trophy home! ;)

Where are you from?

South Africa

Mugabe has made his country one of the poorest countries in Africa.
No one will regret about him.

Now effort must be put so that country gets back to prosperity and economic development.

mogabe had stayed too long in that sit and have to step down in peace .but let the zimbabuwans be carefull so that what happened to lybia will not happen to them.

The people of Zimbambwe deserve better. Hoping the peace will remain, and that whatever happens will benefit the masses.

What does this mean for Martha O'Donovan the American arrested there for insulting Mugabe.

that is my question too...

It's crazy how much power these corrupt govts have..it takes an entire army to bring them down since they run the police force..I hope Zimbabwe gets better soon.

Headless; passionless; educationless not to mention brainless i can think of quite a lot of names to call this guy. Well to be in power for over 35 years and do more damage than good how do you mess up a country and have not even one good thing to show for it. Here is a person that has not only divided his country but also divided the people one group ready for a civil war and the other yearning for a democratic Zimbabwe. Aaah Gracie what do you think you can bring to this empty table seems like you'll be the only one sitting there.....

image
Poor old Grace!

I may be old fashioned or choose to differ with the lot as regarding certain normalities that should be frowned at. Being able to get what you desire without infringing on the right of your fellow human being is the true definition of self enlightenment.

Brandishing derogatory captions publicly about anyone isn't right. I sincerely do not care much about who she is or what she stands/stood for but the fact is; how different are we from her when we can throw decorum into the gallows just because we wish to unequivocally express our anger and disdain.

As humans we have our faults and by all standards not perfect.

Live and let live.

It should be expected ...Mugabe overstepped his boundaries as such repercussion has taken place...how can he hold a Nation to random even under such economic disaster still planning to hand over to his wife after removing his long time aid and Ally ...it's a shame that African leaders cling to power till they either die in power or over thrown thru coup or war...I hope the military does the needful...hand over to the VP who has returned from exile...conduct free & fair election withing 90 days...reconcile with the international community and the white farmers...conduct a mandella style peace & reconciliation talks and like South Africa during Mandela era...push Zimbabwe into posetive growth !
Wish The people of Zimbabwe all the best in this new era...

They need a change badly!

They need it badly, but killing mugabe will be too bad, he need to leave power in peace the zimbabweand are really angry

Yes change is coming to Zimbabwe at last.

My feelings are ambivalent on this. Mugabe did a lot of excellent work in terms of expelling the colonialists who certainly didn't have Zimbabwe's best interest at hand.

Unfortunately, his behavior is like that of a monarch and that has certainly slowed the growth of Zimbabwe. Of course, salty westerners who are still angry they were chased out of Zimbabwe haven't helped with the many sanctions levied against the developing country.

My concerns are for the indegenous population who are yet to taste freedom ever since westerners stepped foot on that land. I'd like to say things would be better if Mugabe's deputy takes over, but given the fact this guy was personally groomed by Mugabe for years, the guava cannot fall too far from the tree.

The poor people of Zimbabwe will likely end up with another dictator or a puppet for western powers.

I wish for those people there it will turn out all good and good things come from it! I must have missed it on the news.

super interesting story, covering it today on The David Pakman Show

And as a side, isn't interesting how Bitcoin has skyrocketed within Zmbabwe exchanges:

I hope their currency will improve and jump up as it is currently the lowest currency in the world.

I'm aware of a suggested plan to combine African resources under one currency. Similar to the EU. Is this a viable plan for Africa? What would be the financial impact on western nations? Would the west ever step aside and allow Africa to unite in this way?

In my opinion, even if the big countries decide to leave Africa, I think some rich African countries such as south Africa and Nigeria will be difficult to convince them in such agreement without giving them extra benefits because they will share their resources with the rest that are mainly poor developing countries. That's why Britain decided to leave EU recently. Anyway, I hope African people will find a good chance to show their capabilities to the whole world and give And make a prosperous life for all Africans nations.
